NEW YORK (CNNMoney) The S&P 500 is once again close to a record high, as investors welcomed the withdrawal of Larry Summers from the race to become next chairman of the Federal Reserve.

The blue chip index rose 0.6% Monday, ending just below the 1,700 mark. Earlier in the day, the broad index was just a handful of points below its all-time peak of 1,709 from the beginning of August. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.8%, while the Nasdaq ended in the red, as a drop in shares of Apple weighed on the tech-heavy index.

Bond investors were elated too. The 10-year Treasury yield fell to 2.87% as investors rushed to buy long-term bonds. The dollar sold off against major currencies — including the euro and the British pound.

Whereas in the 1970s there were limited ways to hedge against inflation, now there is a cornucopia of currency and international commodities instruments that can not only hedge against inflation but other global shocks, such as market bubbles and even war.

And it is these very scenarios that investors have been worried about. Since the beginning of the year, stocks, bonds and just about any investment you can think of have gyrated wildly at various times amid concerns of war, inflation and the possibility that the U.S. equity market is overvalued and headed for a correction.

In response, some market analysts in Bloomberg news reports have offered any number of wildly unsubstantiated statements for why investors should ignore today’s perils. They dismiss the danger posed by Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region (“Putin will stop short of other countries or war with the West”). They also argue that the Federal Reserve chairwoman misspoke (“Janet Yellen really didn’t mean a rate hike is coming soon. Inflation is under control. It was a rookie mistake”).

For my money, here’s the most outrageous: The Shiller Cyclically adjusted P/E metric which has predicted the 1929, 2000 and 2007 downturns doesn’t apply (“Suggests only a slightly expensive market with low to moderate returns going forward on average”).

With new records being set by the S&P 500 in the last few months, it stands to reason that some investors have not needed much convincing to stay all in and buying. This mindset has prevailed, even as the impact of a Russian war or conflict, runaway inflation or a market correction could be devastating to investor portfolios, taking years to recover.

If you’ve never thought of certain investments as “insurance,” it’s time to start now. Protecting wealth is as important as building wealth. And as previously mentioned, we have found that the Inflation Sur vival Letter’s Thri

    Senior gold miners
Another way to profit from rising gold prices is to invest in the producers. One advantage that investing in mining companies can have over the purchase of physical gold is the ability to derive cash flow from your investment. The only way to profit off of an investment in physical gold is to sell it for a higher price than what you bought it for. Mining companies, however, do generate cash, and in many cases the mining company returns some of this cash to investors in the form of a dividend. For example, Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) , one of the largest gold miners in the world, pays a trailing dividend of $0.60 per share. This is a 2.10% yield at the current stock price.

Gold and gold miners are generally thought to do best when the market is worried about inflation. Yet the recent rally in gold miners like Goldcorp (GG), Eldorado Gold (EGO) and Randgold Resources (GOLD) has come despite an increase in worries about deflation.

  • [By Jim Powell]

Goldcorp (GG) is a gold mining pure-play that is well-suited for somewhat more aggressive investors who want a tighter focus than GDX offers. The company is the second largest producer after Barrick Gold (ABX) and is considered by many analysts to be the best in its industry.

Analyst firm Cantor Fitzgerald cut Walgreen Company (WAG) from “Hold” to “Sell,” as an analyst with the firm believes WAG stock is overpriced.

Cantor analyst Ajay Jain had the following comments about the cut to Walgreen’s rating: ”Our views on Walgreen’s fundamentals are unchanged heading into 2Q earnings on 3/25. However, with WAG’s share price up by close to 17% following the 1Q earnings release on 12/20, we can’t justify a HOLD rating without a meaningful increase in our price target. With WAG trading at an estimated forward PE multiple of 24x our FY:14 estimates, we are sticking to our guns on valuation.”

He added: ”WAG also discounts significant earnings upside from Alliance Boots even as the core earnings growth remains in the low-single digits. Finally, based on what we view as some questionable earnings quality recently, we think it’s appropriate to highlight this issue. While WAG had been our top pick after the strategic partnership with Alliance Boots was announced, we think the combined earnings power is more than fully reflected in the stock.”

Cantor has a $50 price target on the company, suggesting the stock will decline 10% from its current price.

WAG stock was inactive in pre-market trading. The stock is up 18.01% YTD.

To show just how much this is in turnaround mode, Rite Aid trades at only about 0.25-times revenue. Walgreen Co. (NYSE: WAG) trades at more than 0.8-times revenue. That does not imply that Rite Aid would be expected to double or triple and still be cheap compared to Walgreen. But that is how turnaround stocks can have so much implied upside.

Today, AUXO surged (+3.26%) up +0.030 at $.950 with 200 shares in play thus far (ref. google finance Delayed: 9:30AM EDT August 23, 2013).

AUXILIO, Inc. previously reported financial results for its quarter ended June 30, 2013.

For the three months ended June 30, 2013, AUXILIO reported that recurring service revenues increased by $1.4 million from new contracts closed between May 2012 and April 2013; however revenues were $9.8 million, a decrease of 8% when compared to revenues of $10.7 million in the same period of 2012, due to a drop in equipment revenue. Equipment sales were $800,000 as compared to $3.1 million for the same period in 2012. Cost of revenues were $8.2 million for the three months ended June 30, 2013, as compared to $9.3 million for the same period in 2012. This drop was due to the drop in equipment sales offset by additional staffing and service costs from the higher recurring service revenue. Gross profit for the second quarter of 2013 was $1.6 million, or 17% of sales, compared to $1.4 million, or 13% of sales, for the same period of 2012. This improvement is a direct result of the large growth in new facilities that we added in 2012 coupled with the reduction in costs as AUXI LIO’s program matures within these new accounts.
