SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Gold prices climbed Wednesday, rebounding after a three-session loss of nearly 4% as uncertainty surrounding the U.S. budget and debt ceiling lured some investors back to the precious metal.

December gold (GCZ3)  rose $17.60, or 1.3%, to $1,333.90 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. After losing $10.70, or 0.8%, on Tuesday, prices had tallied a three-session loss of 3.9%.

Jeffrey Wright, managing director at H.C. Wainwright LLC, said gold found support Wednesday from short covering, a weaker dollar (DXY)  and the “looming U.S. fiscal scenario” that’s weighing on the dollar and boosting gold.

    Lesson 1: Income is king.
A look at the four funds trading at the highest premiums to net asset value reveals a common thread: They’re all focused on maximizing income. What’s interesting, though, is that they use different methods to reach the same ends. Among the three PIMCO funds, PIMCO High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) looks largely to the high-yield bond market for its holdings, while PIMCO Corporate & Income Opportunities (NYSE: PTY  ) has a somewhat lower distribution rate but has a sizable allocation to investment-grade debt. The fund with the highest premium, PIMCO Global StocksPLUS, uses futures contracts to add stock exposure to its portfolio of income-producing bonds. Finally, BlackRock Virginia Municipal Bond rounds out the top four with its tax-free bond portfolio.

Goldman Sachs reported on Friday that it has cut its rating on Sonoco Products Company (SON).

The firm has downgraded SON from “Neutral” to “Sell,” and has maintained its current $36 price target. This price target suggests a 9% upside from the stock’s current price of $39.58.

An analyst from the firm noted: “We downgrade SON to Sell (relative to our coverage) from Neutral on a lower projected EPS CAGR through 2015 (7% vs. 15% for group) and relative valuation – SON shares are trading at 15.4X 2014E P/E, ahead of the Packaging group average at 14.6X, and its 5-year historical average of 13.2X. However, our 3Q EPS for SON is largely in line with consensus and we do not expect the 3Q print to be a catalyst for underperformance.”

Sonoco Products shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Friday. The stock is up 33% YTD.

Answer: I like NextEra Energy, which has significant renewables exposure and operates in a region with solid economic fundamentals. The Latin American brewer industry can be fiercely competitive, and the market is shared among only a few players. While Ambev SA (ADR) (ABEV) dominates the Brazilian beer market, United Breweries Company Inc. ADR (CCU) is Chile’s largest brewer (with about 80% of the market’s share) and No. 2 in the Argentine market, behind Quilmes, which owns 75% of that market. With investment gurus Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio) and Manning & Napier Advisors buying the company’s shares this past quarter, I believe this company’s business model is worth a deeper look.
