Top Up And Coming Stocks To Own For 2015

Fidelity Investments is increasing the stock allocation across its target date funds after research found that investors are OK with more risk in retirement accounts and the outlook for bonds dims.

The biggest reason for the change was new research Fidelity conducted on how 401(k) plan participants reacted to the stock market plunge in 2008, the worst decline since the Great Depression. The firm’s research uncovered no discernible change in the 401(k) participation rate or in fund turnover across the 12 million participants in its record-keeping platform.

“We looked at investor behavior in 2008 and our conclusion was that people can tolerate a lot more equities than we thought in their retirement planning,” said Bruce Herring, group chief investment officer of the global asset allocation division within Fidelity.

The next best growth by any of the top five ITOM vendors last year? BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC  ) was up a paltry 0 .9% year over year. Even IBM, the undisputed king of ITOM, grew a mere 0.8% in 2012. Granted, IBM’s $3.28 billion in ITOM revenue in 2012 handily beats Microsoft’s $1.48 billion, as does BMC’s $1.92 billion, but the trend is clear: Microsoft is leveraging its enterprise and cloud computing customers better than its ITOM competitors.

But one big element pushing Splunk’s stock higher was the buyout offer that rival BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC  ) received earlier this month. A group of private investors that includes Bain Capital made the $6.9 billion offer for BMC, and with activist investor Elliott Management having blessed the deal, it’s likely to go through. The strategic move establishes the value of companies in the data-analytics space, especially given that BMC had already lost its competitive edge against Splunk and other rivals.

On the other hand, ZAGG’s also faced significant headwinds because of the perception that its offerings are commoditized or simply irrelevant. Fool contributor Rex Moore notes that Corning’s (NYSE: GLW  ) ever advancements in Gorilla Glass, undermine ZAGG’s protective-screen business by essentially catering to the same problem. Furthermore, ZAGG’s move into the audio accessories market, which is largely dominated by Skullcandy (NASDAQ: SKUL  ) , couldn’t drive much sales growth as the company has to face Skullcandy’s discounts — the headphones segment is becoming highly commoditized, with relatively few exceptions. The mobile-computing accessories market is expected to grow to $60 billion by 2015, but in order to grab a larger slice of that pie, ZAGG will have to find the killer edge that will differentiate it in a tightly packed field.

That’s certainly not good news for such agriculture stocks as fertilizer producers Potash of Saskatchewan (POT), Mosaic (MOS), and Yara International (YARIY). And it’s not good news for Deere for 2014, as a whole, either. The company lowered guidance for the quarter that ends in April to sales of $9.65 billion, versus the current Wall Street consensus of $9.89 billion. That would represent a 6% drop in sales in the quarter.

Similarly, Japan faces both rewards and challenges from its new, stimulus-paved road. While the easy-money climate has sparked a surge in Japanese financial stocks such as Nomura Holdings (NYSE: NMR  ) — a company where revenues jumped 30% on the back of stimulus — questions linger about how Japan will service its debt, which has grown to more than 200% of GDP, as well as combat the potential of reduced bank lending as a result of low interest rates.

But then, H&R Block ran into trouble with its software. The IRS said that a limited number of software company products failed to provide for the correct treatment of the American Opportunity educational tax credit, forcing an estimated 660,000 taxpayers to have to wait an additional six weeks for their refunds, and H&R Block had been informing its customers about the problems. Intuit (NASDAQ: INTU  ) already has a commanding lead over H&R Block with Intuit’s TurboTax software, so H&R Block’s slip-up likely didn’t add much to Intuit’s dominance. But even Blucora’s (NASDAQ: BCOR  ) TaxAct software might well benefit from the issue, forcing H&R Block to rely even more on its bricks-and-mortar stores in order to keep its sales up.
