Management of Atlantic Power Corp (TSX: ATP, NYSE: AT) reported third-quarter and nine-month operating and financial results that in a vacuum were solid.
But management’s prepared remarks and answers to analysts’ questions during the company’s third-quarter conference call on Friday, Nov. 8, leave very open the distinct possibility of another dividend cut announcement in early 2014.
Project-adjusted earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) for the third quarter were up 32.7 percent compared to the prior corresponding period to USD76.2 million, and the nine-month total was up 24.9 percent to USD213.3 million. Both figures were slightly ahead of management expectations.
Cash available for distribution for the quarter was USD37.9 million, up 33.9 percent from USD28.3 million a year ago. On a year-to-date basis distributable cash was up 8.8 percent to USD109.9 million, already topping management’s full-year guidance of USD85 million to USD100 million.

Therefore the situation is still very bullish for investors in physical gold and the gold ETFs (GLD, CEF, and PHYS). Investors interested in leveraging this situation into higher potential profits may also consider buying gold miners such as Randgold (GOLD), Goldcorp (GG), Yamana Gold (AUY), and any of the other gold miners. Finally, those willing to shoulder much larger risks may consider some of the exploration and micro-cap companies that offer significant profits at a high risk such as Chesapeake Gold (CHPGF.PK), Pretium Resources (PVG), Western Copper (WRN), or any other of the junior exploration companies. Though investors should keep in mind that gold mining companies and explorers do not always rise with a rising gold price – do your research before you invest in the miners.

Yesterday’s villain was a big miss by Citigroup (C) before the open. Today doesn’t look a whole lot better for the sector because, after the close on January 16, American Express (AXP), Capital One (COF), and Sallie Mae (SLM) all reported significant earnings misses. American Express came in with fourth quarter earnings of $1.21 a share versus a consensus projection of $1.25. Capital One reported $1.45 a share instead of $1.57. And student loan company Sallie Mae announced 61 cents a share versus the analyst consensus of 73 cents a share.

And Cheniere Energy Partners (CQP) owns the shipment facilities – the pipelines and LNG terminal facilities.
But here’s the key point: Kent views both of these as “core holdings” – foundational plays for the energy-focused portion of your portfolio. They are two of the best ways to take advantage of a shift in the U.S. energy sector that Kent likes to refer to as the “LNG Revolution.”
- [By Robert Rapier]
Back to the initial question, the primary catalyst on the horizon that should benefit the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers will be the upcoming completion of LNG export terminals. As Cheniere Energy Partners (NYSE: CQP) prepares to begin shipping LNG from its Sabine Pass LNG export terminal, and follows with another LNG terminal in Corpus Christi, Tex., investors should warm to LNG carriers as a significant investment opportunity. You may have to be a little patient as CQP’s first terminal isn’t scheduled to start shipping until late 2015 or early 2016. But there should be a lot of press coverage as project completion draws near.
- [By Robert Rapier]
Although it is the first of the first movers in this space, I think Cheniere Energy (NYSE: LNG) is fairly deep into speculative territory at this point. In 2012 Cheniere became the first to obtain approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to export LNG to countries that lack a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the US. The non-FTA designation is important, because it covers many of the most lucrative LNG markets. Cheniere is the only company to have received the required approvals from both FERC and the US Department of Energy (DOE).
In 2007 Cheniere created the Cheniere Energy Partners (NYSE: CQP) master limited partnership to own assets such as its Sabine Pass LNG export terminal under construction on the Louisiana/Texas border, as well as another LNG terminal in Corpus Christi. Cheniere has signed up a number of customers in Asia and in Europe.
But the stock is surfing huge expectations that are already factored into the share price. While I believe there is money to be made in exporting natural gas, natural gas producers are lower-risk plays, followed by LNG tanker companies and gas infrastructure builders. LNG export backers are more aggressive and riskier options.
