But it is important to note that ETE also has interests in Sunoco Logistics Partners (NYSE: SXL) and Regency Energy Partners (NYSE: RGP).
Finally, consider NuStar Energy (NYSE: NS) and its general partner NuStar GP Holdings (NYSE: NSH). Like ETE, NSH went public in 2006 and has also significantly outperformed its limited partner since:
The vast majority of partnerships don’t have a publicly-traded GP. But in each of these three cases in which the GP is publicly traded, the GP tends to outperform the LP units on long-term gains, an advantage somewhat offset by the typically higher LP yield.

Exchange-traded funds offer a convenient way to invest in sectors or niches that interest you. If you’d like to add some large-cap stocks to your portfolio but don’t have the time or expertise to hand-pick a few, the Vanguard Large-Cap ETF (NYSEMKT: VV ) could save you a lot of trouble. Instead of trying to figure out which large-cap stocks will perform best, you can use this ETF to invest in lots of them simultaneously.
ETFs often sport lower expense ratios than their mutual-fund cousins. This ETF, focused on large-cap stocks, sports a relatively low expense ratio — an annual fee — of 0.1%. It yields about 2%.
This ETF has performed reasonably, but it’s also very young, with just a few years on the books. It underperformed the S&P 500 in 2008 and 2010, though it beat it substantially in 2007 and 2009. As with most investments, of course, we can’t expect outstanding performances in every quarter or year. Investors with co nviction need to wait for their holdings to deliver.

You’ll notice that these numbers don’t add up to $1.4988. That’s because the 2012 distribution also contained a hefty chunk of return of capital (70.489 cents). ROC isn’t taxable immediately; rather, it is subtracted from the adjusted cost base (ACB) of the units, which gives rise to a larger capital gain, or smaller capital loss, when the units are ultimately sold. Many REITs and mutual funds also distribute ROC. ROC can be a bit of a headache for investors. If you hold BIP in a non-registered account, you (or your accountant), will need to track those ROC payments in order to keep your ACB up to date. Knowing the ACB is necessary to calculate your capital gain, or loss, when it comes time to sell.

Weight Watchers International (WTW) has surged today after the company beat earnings forecasts and raised its guidance of the year.
Shares of Weight Watchers have gained 23% to $24.36 at 11:27 a.m., while NutriSystem (NTRI) has gained 2.4% to $15.36 and Medifast (MED) has dropped 1.6% to $31.15.
Weight Watchers reported a profit of 31 cents a share, easily besting the Street Consensus for 9 cents.
Credit Suisse analysts Glen Santangelo and Jeffrey Bailin explain why Weight Watcher’s shares have put on a few pounds:
The predominant message on [last] evening’s conference call is that recruitment trends have shown some incremental stabilization and are no longer getting worse. This trend change combined with continued vigilance on the cost side has given management the confidence to raise its full year outlook $0.125 at the midpoint, to a new range of $1.45-$1.70. We note this compares favorably to the current FactSet consensus of $1.40. Cash flow of $83M in the quarter was solid, which should help alleviate some concerns on the upcoming ~$300M debt payment due in 2016. With expectations very low heading into the quarter (as exhibited by high short interest), we expect these results will give the shares a boost in tomorrow’s trading. While the
company is far from out of the woods in the intensifying competitive landscape, we are somewhat encouraged that the initial steps management is taking to redefine the offering are gaining some traction.
Shares of Weight Watchers were down 40% this year at yesterday’s close, while NutriSystem had fallen 7.7% and Medifast had gained 21%.

Alamy We all understand that companies collect information on our behaviors, our shopping patterns and the like. But we collect data about ourselves, too. The problem is that we’re not analyzing much of it. And we’re missing a big opportunity to improve our lives and our finances. A friend was recently asking me about Fitbit. Most of my friends know that I’m a huge fan of Fitbit, those little pedometers on steroids, that help you monitor the number of daily steps you take and things like calories burned, food consumption, weight, sleep patterns and other health statistics. I love the service and what it tells you about your health. My friend was curious about how it can tell if you got a good night’s sleep. I told him that it’s a cool feature. Monitoring Your Sleep Is All the Rage A lot of very cool smartphone apps, in addition to Fitbit, monitor your sleep patterns. Studies have shown that there is an optimal time to wake up at your lightest phase of sleep based on your REM sleep patterns, which ebb and flow throughout the night over the course of a few hours each. One app, Sleep Time by Azumio, provides you with stunning graphs and a ream of data about how well you slept the night before. But I told my friend that I don’t really know what to do with all of the information. Should I go to bed earlier? Should I stop watching television in bed before I fall asleep? A lot of questions arise from having all of this data at your fingertips. And the same is true with our finances. We often go to great lengths preparing our family’s monthly written budget or tracking our net worth. Many credit card companies provide incredible pie charts and graphs about your spending. So what should we do with all of this new information? Are we wasting most of it? How can we put it to work for us instead? Make Some New Habits with the Data “We take the time to construct a detailed budget or use an online budgeting tool, but few of us ever make concrete changes that better

Another area that is intriguing to us is the North American energy sector which looks to have a number of interesting catalysts currently. While the energy sector is at present only a modest overweight in the portfolios, we have been encouraged by several trends taking place for a number of years. These positive developments are also having an impact that goes far beyond the energy sector itself. Many believe that the U.S. will become energy independent and possibly a net exporter of natural gas and oil (currently restricted by law) in the next decade. This opinion is based primarily on the development of new drilling techniques (i.e. horizontal drilling, and high pressure fracking) that have enabled companies to access oil and natural gas reserves in shale formations that were previously not economically viable. The ability to tap into this acreage is a game-changer in our view and is already having a tremendous impact on the economy. Employment rates in these mostly rura l areas surrounding the shale basins are very high and companies thus find hiring extremely competitive. Strong labor markets tend to create strong local economies. Oil States International (OIS) has been able to capitalize on this trend by providing housing and other services to oil service workers that are in demand in the area. CST Brands (CST) operates gas stations in Texas, but it is increasingly looking to broaden its product offering beyond fuel. Rail companies like Union Pacific (UNP), Canadian Pacific (CP), Kansas City Southern (KSU) and Genesee and Wyoming (GWR) have also benefited substantially. Given that shale areas are rural and often lacking infrastructure, substantial investment must be made to support drilling and production activities. Without pipelines in place, railroads have been the primary takeaway mechanism for moving production to the various clusters of refining capacity around the United States. In order to serve this demand, massive investment in railcars has been nee
