Top Tech Stocks For 2015

Although we don’t believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes — just in case they’re material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of network equipment maker Ciena (NASDAQ: CIEN  ) popped 14% today after the company’s quarterly results and outlook topped Wall Street expectations.

So what: The stock has stagnated in recent years on slow spending from telecom companies, but a surprise second-quarter adjusted profit of $0.02, coupled with upbeat guidance for the current quarter, reinforces recent optimism over rebounding demand. In fact, revenue grew 6.3% while gross margins expanded 300 basis points over the year-ago period, suggesting that Ciena’s competitive position is strengthening, as well.

Now what: Management sees third-quarter revenue of $515 million-$545 million, well ahead of Wall Street’s view of $509.5 million. “We have designed Ciena to take advantage of the fundamental shift in network architecture driven by changing end-user demands,” said CEO Gary Smith. “These dynamics are creating new opportunities that we believe will enable us to continue making progress toward our long-term financial goals.” With the stock now up more than 50% from its 52-week lows and trading at a 20-plus forward P/E, however, much of that progress might already be baked into the valuation.

Power Integrations (POWI) designs, develops, manufactures and markets proprietary, high-voltage, analog integrated circuits for use in AC-DC and DC-DC power conversion in the consumer, communications, computer and industrial electronics markets. This stock closed up 5.9% at $55.15 in Wednesday’s trading session.

    Wednesday’s Volume: 571,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 218,547

    Volume % Change: 173%

From a technical perspective, POWI ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $50.68 with above-average volume. This move also pushed shares of POWI into breakout and new 52-week-high territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $55.38. At last check, POWI closed a bit off its intraday high and volume was well above its three-month average action of 218,547 shares.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in POWI as long as it’s trending above Wednesday’s low of $52.60 and then once it sustains a move or close above Wednesday’s high of $55.59 with volume that this near or above 218,547 shares. If we see that move soon, then POWI will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $60 to $62.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Kell]

Aruba Networks Inc.(ARUN) swung to a fiscal second-quarter loss as the wireless-networking equipment maker’s increased expenses more than offset revenue growth and the results also were hurt by one-time items. Shares climbed 9% to $22.98 premarket.

  • [By Jake L’Ecuyer]

Aruba Networks (NASDAQ: ARUN) was also up, gaining 6.63 percent to $18.34 after the company reported upbeat Q1 results. Needham upgraded the stock from Hold to Buy.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One network equipment player that’s quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Aruba Networks (ARUN), which provides enterprise mobility solutions. This stock is off to a weak start in 2013, with shares off by 11%.

If you take a look at the chart for Aruba Networks, you’ll notice that this stock just formed a major bottom chart pattern, after buyers stepped in to support the price over the last month and change from $17 to $16.25 a share. Following that bottom, shares of ARUN have now started to rebound higher and move back above its 50-day moving average of $17.73 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of ARUN within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ARUN if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $19.16 a share to its 200-day moving average at $19.63 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.12 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ARUN will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from May that started near $22 a share. Any high-volume move above $22 will then give ARUN a chance to hit $24 to $25 a share.

Traders can look to buy ARUN off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below support at $17 a share or below $16.25 a share if you want to give it more room. One can also buy ARUN off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

  • [By Freelance Individual Investor]

Recently, there have been a spate of articles depicting Aruba Networks (ARUN) as just another player in the Wi-Fi space. Many of these detractors focused on GAAP losses, high executive compensation costs due to higher than normal stock option grants, and increasing competition from lower cost providers in some segments of their business. There is definitely some merit to these criticisms. And ARUN is attempting to address these concerns.

Public companies leveraging their patent portfolios, (aka "patent plays"), are getting the market’s attention. Companies such as Vringo (VRNG), ParkerVision (PRKR), MGT Capital (MGT), Worlds Inc. (WDDD.OB) and others have presented trading opportunities due to their volatility while retaining the chance for a big payoff to those investors who stay the course. Yet there exist viable patent plays that are still undiscovered. Some of these so called "plays," which are not getting enough attention, are actually real companies making and selling real products or services in contrast to pure patent monetization companies. Some known examples are Single Touch Interactive (SITO.OB) and Blue Calypso (BCYP.OB). This article is focused on another one of these patent plays, On Track Innovations Ltd. (OTIV).
