On Monday, Herbalife (HLF) announced that it has given Carl Icahn three more board seats.

Carl Icahn is currently the company’s biggest shareholder, and with the addition of three more Icahn representatives on the board, Icahn will control five board seats on a 13-person board. Herbalife stated it will nominate Hunter C. Gary and Jesse A. Lynn–two employees of Icahn–and James L. Nelson, an independent director of the firm Icahn Enterprises.

The nutrition and weight loss products company has been under scrutiny in recent months, with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission investigating Herbalife’s business practices.

Herbalife shares rallied 6.7% during Monday’s session. Year-to-date, the stock is down 37.94%.

  • [By CNNMoney Staff]

Herbalife (HLF), the nutritional supplements distributor that uses a similar multi-level marketing sales model as Nu Skin, also rallied on the news. Herbalife revealed earlier this month that it is being probed by the Federal Trade Commission.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The FTC’s decision to investigate Herbalife (HLF) came with collateral damage for all multi-level marketers, including Nu Skin (NUS) and Usana Health Sciences (USNA).

    REUTERS

Deutsche Bank’s Bill Schmitz Jr and team explain why Nu Skin could come through OK:

With [Nu Skin] busy with ongoing internal investigation, cooperation with Chinese government and working to get 10K filed next week (which we view as highly likely), investor and public relations efforts are understandably on hold. However, we remind investors that Nu Skin has a consent decree with the FTC from the 1990s where it agreed to follow explicit rules on product efficacy and earnings opportunity claims and has closely worked with the agency over the last several years (like most direct sellers) to ensure ongoing compliance. Historically, these seemingly binary events, after reviewing past circumstances and resolutions, have proven lucrative for investors and we believe that continues to be the case in this instance. With [Nu Skin’s] stock trading below 7x conservative CY15 EBITDA and still compelling growth opportunities once the dust settles, we maintain our Buy and $110 target.

Shares of Nu Skin have dropped 1.2% to $72.31, while Herbalife has gained 2.4% to $58.67 and Usana Health Sciences has ticked up 0.4% to $72.03.

Investors love stocks that consistently beat the Street without getting ahead of their fundamentals and risking a meltdown. The best stocks offer sustainable market-beating gains, with robust and improving financial metrics that support strong price growth. Does ZAGG (NASDAQ: ZAGG  ) fit the bill? Let’s look at what its recent results tell us about its potential for future gains.

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

    Why Corning?
The company is a giant in specialty glasses and fiber optics. Its fortunes are influenced these days by smartphone and tablet makers such as Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) , which use its glass in their displays. Corning’s Gorilla Glass is so strong that it has put a crimp in the business of screen-protecting companies such as ZAGG (NASDAQ: ZAGG  ) . Some worry about Apple’s interest in sapphire, though, as it’s even stronger than Gorilla Glass (though more expensive) and could threaten Corning.

  • [By Rick Munarriz]

    Thursday
ZAGG (NASDAQ: ZAGG  ) has been a brutal disappointment for investors who thought they were getting a thinking investor’s play on the smartphone and tablet revolutions. The maker of protective screens, keyboard covers, and other mobile-gadget accessories has fallen hard after hosing down its outlook twice over the past three months.

That could be particularly true for these three dividend-paying health-care companies: GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK  ) , Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) , and Quest Diagnostics (NYSE: DGX  ) . They not only pay healthy dividend yields that can blunt the pain of a sell-off, but they’re also strong performers during the coming quarter. That suggests investors may not want to sell them, and investors who have been considering them may want to step in and buy them.
