Top Regional Bank Stocks For 2014

If playing an integral role in millions of smartphone displays and (soon) big-screen TVs weren’t enough, the folks at Universal Display (NASDAQ: OLED  ) have fixed their eyes on aircraft interiors around the world.

On Monday, Universal Display announced (link opens PDF) that it has been awarded a $225,000 Small Business Innovation Researce Phase I grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, through which it “will partner with and subcontract IDD Aerospace/Zodiac Lighting Solutions to evaluate and demonstrate the potential for energy-efficient and cost-effective white OLED lighting panels for aircraft interiors.”

I suppose UDC couldn’t have found a better partner. IDD Aerospace, for its part, describes itself as “a global leader in the development and supply of state of the art lighting solutions for the aerospace industry,” creating “modern and sophisticated lighting solutions that take into account human factors from the comfort of the cabin to the complexity and criticality of flight deck instrumentation.”

For those looking to invest in real estate stocks, highly recommended is the Dr. Housing Bubble blog. In a recent posting, the “Dr.” pointed out that there was a “Lost Generation” when it came to household income. That has not happened for those investing in staffing industry stocks such as Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX), Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI), TrueBlue, Inc. (NYSE: TBI), and Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC).

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

When looking at small cap stocks, it is useful to compare the company with others that have expanded in both share price and size. For those considering investing in the $100 billion staffing industry, the growth of TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI) shows what could be the potential path for Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC), as both operate in the $29 billion demand labor sector. Other firms have done well in the staffing industry include Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX) and ManPower Group (NYSE: MAN).

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

Even though the stock market rallied on Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s remarks with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DIA) and Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (NYSE: SPY) surging, the long term winners will be stocks in the staffing industry such as Paychex(NASDAQ: PAYX), TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI), Robert Half (NYSE: RHI), and Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC).

  • [By Monica Gerson]

Analysts at Credit Suisse downgraded Toll Brothers (NYSE: TOL) from “outperform” to “neutral.” The target price for Toll Brothers is set to $39.

  • [By Sinisa Persich]

Toll Brothers Inc. (TOL)  has been consolidating its big run from 32.50 through resistance at 35.00 and up to near 37.00 in mid-December, flagging for the last eight weeks, and making higher lows. A move above 37.19 would break the stock out of its current flag formation.

We believe that a significant reason these companies were spun-off was to unlock the inherent value that was buried underneath poor investment sentiment and extreme uncertainty with respect to housing. The degree of undervaluation and negativity prompted us to take a closer look at the industry as a whole and ascertain exactly what was occurring. Was there something more going on here? Were there any catalysts to spark a recovery, and if so, who would benefit? We may have been drawn to housing through our focus on spin-offs, but recognizing the turnaround/industry restructuring that was taking place led us to invest directly in homebuilders such as Toll Brothers (TOL) and Pulte Group (PHM), which provided the greatest contribution to the Funds’ performance.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By MarketWatch]

Treasurer Joe Hockey said Yanzhou Coal Mining Co. (YZC) no longer needed to meet a Dec. 31 deadline for reducing its stake in Yancoal Australia Ltd. (YAL.AU) below 70%, citing the downturn in global coal prices. Yanzhou, which owns 78% of Yancoal Australia, had made the commitment in 2009 to complete its 3.5 billion Australian dollar (US$3.2 billion) takeover of Felix Resources Ltd.

Yanzhou Coal Mining (YZC) engages in the underground coal mining, as well as preparation, processing, sale and railway transportation of coal. This stock closed up 7.6% to $7.31 in Thursday’s trading session.

    Thursday’s Range: $7.14-$7.31

    52-Week Range: $6.68-$18.57

    Thursday’s Volume: 391,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 370,383

From a technical perspective, YZC bounced sharply higher here right off some near-term support at $6.77 with above-average volume. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last six months, with shares plunging from its high of over $14 to its recent low of $6.68. During that move, shares of YZC have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of YZC have recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $6.68 to $6.77. This stock now looks ready to reverse that downtrend and possibly trigger a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if YZC manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.76 to $8 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in YZC as long as it’s trending above its recent low of $6.77 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 370,383 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then YZC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $9 to $10. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give YZC a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $10.67 to $11.11

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

For investors, the recent drop in all three shares — along with Kinder Morgan Management LLC (KMR) –- have put them all near their 52-week lows and at some of the highest dividend yields not seen in years. At these prices, you’re still getting strong dividend growth — about 5% for KMI — along with the chance to own the largest pipeline network in North America.

  • [By The Part-time Investor]

I sold Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (KMP), 168 shares at $80.38, and I replaced it with Kinder Morgan Management (KMR), 264 shares at $75.39. KMR pays its quarterly distribution in extra shares, rather than in cash, as KMP does. For some (crazy) reason this makes it okay to hold it in a retirement account without the tax implications.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Kinder Morgan offers investors four ways to invest. In addition to the parent company, Kinder Morgan, investors can also choose to invest in MLPs Kinder Morgan Partners and El Paso Pipeline Partners or Kinder Morgan Management (NYSE: KMR  ) . Both of the partnerships directly own the pipeline and other midstream assets and offer higher yields. Meanwhile, the management company offers a tax-friendly way to invest in Kinder Morgan Partners with one key difference: Investors are paid in shares instead of cash. No matter which option you choose, Kinder Morgan is a top company whose stock, or units, are a great holding for any portfolio.

Kinder Morgan Energy Partners is part of the Kinder Morgan family of companies with a combined enterprise value of over $115B. Kinder Morgan, Inc (KMI) is Kinder Morgan Energy Partners’ general partner and has incentive distribution rights and owns about 10% of the partnership. Another way to own Kinder Morgan Energy Partners is via Kinder Morgan Management (KMR), whose shares are pari passu with Kinder Morgan Energy Partners and has an equal distribution but pays its dividend in additional shares instead of cash. This in effects acts as a dividend reinvest program.

Advisors’ Opinion:

One under-$10 health care player that’s starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Symmetry Medical (SMA), which designs, develops and produces medical device solutions and surgical instruments. This stock has been hit by the sellers in 2013, with shares off by 22%.

If you take a look at the chart for Symmetry Medical, you’ll notice that this stock has been finding some buying interest over the last two months, each time it’s pulled back to around $7.75 a share. That action has started to form a bottoming pattern for SMA near that $7.75 level. Shares of SMA are now starting to challenge its 50-day moving average of $8.20 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of SMA within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SMA if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.29 to $8.60 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 129,189 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SMA will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $9.40 to its 200-day moving average of $9.59 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $10.50 to $11 into range for shares of SMA.

Traders can look to buy SMA off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $7.75 a share, or at $7.44 a share. One can also buy SMA off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
