For those who had hoped that Sears Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: SHLD) would break out of its multiyear revenue and earnings funk, think again. After too many management changes to count, and fits and starts of redesigning its K-Mart and Sears stores, majority holder and CEO Eddie Lampert botched it again.

There is no reason to go beyond the retail holding company’s press release:

Second Quarter Revenues and Comparable Store Sales Revenues decreased $596 million to $8.9 billion for the quarter ended August 3, 2013, as compared to revenues of $9.5 billion for the quarter ended July 28, 2012.

And:

For the quarter, domestic comparable store sales declined 1.5%, comprised of decreases of 2.1% at Kmart and 0.8% at Sears Domestic. The decline at Kmart reflects decreases in our transactional categories, such as grocery & household, pharmacy and drugstore. It also includes declines in consumer electronics and toys. These decreases were partially offset by increases in the footwear and lawn & garden categories.

But, on its own I still really like this pick. It’s Annaly Capital Management Inc. (NYSE: NLY).

I like this mortgage REIT for several reasons. First and foremost it’s been hit hard as interest rates have risen. It’s a “bottom-feeding” play for us. Meaning it’s trading down at its 52-week lows and we’re playing it for a bounce.

Monmouth Real Estate Investment (NYSE: MNR  ) will release its quarterly report on Thursday, and investors have been nervous lately about the real estate investment trust’s prospects in a rising interest rate environment. Yet what sets Monmouth apart from both leveraged mortgage REIT Annaly Capital Management (NYSE: NLY  ) and traditional industrial REITs is the fact that Monmouth gets about half of its rental revenue from a single customer, FedEx (NYSE: FDX  ) . Does that add an unacceptable level of risk to the investment, or is it actually a positive for Monmouth?

Annaly Capital (NLY) is one of the leaders in the mortgage REIT sector, and the stock has not been spared the pummeling seen in this group. So far in 2013 the shares have fallen by more than 25% … but insiders seem to think that better times are ahead.

At midnight Pacific time, when everyone who wanted to be first to preorder their iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus hit the Apple (AAPL) Store website, they found the door closed. And hours after that, the site was still down, according to the technology website cnet.com. Others sites set to take orders for the latest offering from Apple, T-Mobile (TMUS) and Sprint (S) also had problems dealing with the flood of consumers who want the newest technology as soon as it’s available. Those who place preorders through Apple are offered either free shipping or pickup at an Apple retail store. For those who don’t want to play the online game, Apple stores are scheduled to begin selling the iPhone 6 at its physical stores at 8 a.m. Sept. 19. Complaints Expressed on Social Media Those trying to get the new phones took to social media to complain that even when they got on an order site that they found certain models and colors unavailable. It was something of an embarrassment for a technology company that was well aware of how many consumers clamor for its devices when they are first released. After the initial feverish burst of interest died down, Apple appeared to get things under control. At about 3 a.m. Pacific time, users reported the site was working and taking orders for all types of phones. Still, some noted that specific colors, like gold, apparently were in such demand that orders are showing delivery dates several weeks out. For in-stock units, buyers can expect to get them on Sept. 19. The iPhone 6 Plus appears to be the most popular offering, with some mobile carriers not offering delivery until mid-October. Apple has had a history of huge demand for its new devices when they’re released and has not always been able to keep up with it. With the 2012 release of iPhone 5, Apple couldn’t supply enough devices to avoid a sellout on launch day. This time, though, the company has said it has ordered far more devices be built to avoid disappointing those who want to be

Top Quality Stocks To Buy Right Now: Market Vectors Poland ETF (PLND)

Market Vectors Poland ETF (the Fund) seeks to replicate the price and yield performance of the Market Vectors Poland Index (the Index). The Index is a diversified index consisting of at least 25 companies either headquartered in Poland or deriving at least 50% of their revenues from Poland. It invest in sectors, such as financials, energy, industrials, consumer staples, telecomm services, materials, consumer discretionary, utilities, information technology and healthcare. The Fund’s investment advisor is Van Eck Associates Corporation. Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Benjamin Shepherd]

Market Vectors Poland (NYSE: PLND) is a great exchange traded fund (ETF) play on the continued strength of the Polish economy.

Financial services figure prominently in the ETF’s holdings at 44 percent of assets, but that’s lower than other competing products and largely reflective of the major role the financial sector plays in Poland’s economy. More than 23 percent of assets are allocated to basic materials and energy due to the country’s resource wealth.

The ETF is also relatively cheap with an expense ratio of just 0.61 percent. It also offers the added benefit of a nearly 3.2 percent yield, thanks to the tradition of Polish stocks paying stable dividends.

What’s more, the fund is inexpensive in terms of valuation because it price has been depressed by the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. Both countries have historically been Russian satellites, but Poland was quick to integrate itself with Western Europe after the country’s communist go vernment fell in 1989. As a result, it enjoys the diplomatic cover of the EU and the military protection of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, making it unlikely that Russia will interfere in the country’s politics.

Despite those protections, the fund’s price-to-forward-earnings ratio has fallen from about 19 to just 14 over the past few weeks and shares are now trading at book value. Shares are also trading at just 0.58 times sales, a substantial discount to the fund’s historical valuation largely due to regional concerns.

One under-$10 biopharmaceutical player that’s starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Cardiome Pharma (CRME), which engages in the discovery, development and commercialization of therapies that enhance the health of patients. This stock has been on fire over the last three months, with shares up sharply by 43%.

If you take a look at the chart for Cardiome Pharma, you’ll notice that this stock has been trading range bound for the last month or so, with shares moving between $5.85 on the downside and $7.15 on the upside. Shares of CRME have now started to bounce higher off that big support level near $6 a share and it’s quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade above some key near-term overhead resistance levels.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CRME if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $6.95 to its 52-week high at $7.15 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 123,602 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then CRME will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $9 to $10 a share.

Traders can look to buy CRME off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $6 or $5.85 or near its 50-day moving average of $5.63 a share. One can also buy CRME off strength once it starts to take out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven’t materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Crane (NYSE: CR  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company’s inventory growth to sales growth. How is Crane doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, OK, it seems. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 0.6%, and inventory decreased 2.4%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue dropped 2.8%, and inventory contracted 2.4%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue dropped 0.4%, and inventory grew 2.0%.
