LONDON — The last five years have been tough for those in retirement. Portfolio valuations have been hammered and annuity rates have plunged. There’s no sign of things improving anytime soon, either, as the eurozone and the U.K. economy look set to muddle through at best for some years to come.
A great way of protecting yourself from the downturn, however, is by building your retirement fund with shares of large, well-run companies that should grow their earnings steadily over the coming decades. Over time, such investments ought to result in rising dividends and inflation-beating capital growth.
In this series, I’m tracking down the U.K. large caps that have the potential to beat the FTSE 100 over the long term and support a lower-risk, income-generating retirement fund (you can see all of the companies I’ve covered so far on this page).
Over the last few weeks, I’ve looked at Hammerson (LSE: HMSO ) , Croda International (LSE: CRDA ) , TUI Travel (LSE: TT ) , London Stock Exchange Group (LSE: LSE ) , and Resolution Limited (LSE: RSL ) . Let’s take a look at how each of them scored against my five key retirement share criteria:

The Q3 2014 earnings report for mid cap online real estate information stock Zillow Inc (NASDAQ: Z), a peer of small cap Move Inc (NASDAQ: MOVE) which News Corp (NASDAQ: NWSA) is acquiring and small cap Trulia Inc (NYSE: TRLA) which Zillow is also acquiring, is scheduled for after the market’s close on Wednesday (November 5th). Aside from the Zillow Inc earnings report, it should be said that Move Inc reported Q2 2014 earnings on July 29th (revenue rose 7% to $61.3M, average monthly unique users of realtor.com®’s web and mobile sites grew 18% to 31.2M and Non-GAAP Loss Per Share was $0.03 per diluted share verses Non-GAAP Earnings Per Share of $0.11) and Trulia Inc reported Q3 2014 earnings on October 29th (total revenue rose 67% to $67.1M along with an adjusted net loss of $2.8 million, or $0.08 per share on a basic and diluted basis, compared with adjusted net income of $9.1 million, or $0.26 and $0.24 per share on a basic and diluted basis, respectively). The acquis ition of Move Inc and Trulia Inc though (assuming the Federal Trade Commission approves the deal) really leaves Zillow Inc as the main publicly traded online real estate information.

The industry dropped 2.90% by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was Trulia (NYSE: TRLA), which declined 4.6%. Trulia’s PEG ratio is -5.98.

Critics of real estate portals Zillow (NASDAQ: Z ) and Trulia (NYSE: TRLA ) have long thought both companies represented poor business models, and the $3.5 billion all-stock merger of the two isn’t about to change anyone’s mind. Although there’s been a lot of ink spilled about the benefits to accrue from combining the two real estate info houses, this may end up being less a fortuitous joining of forces and more like the merger of declining retailers Sears, Roebuck and Kmart that resulted in Sears Holding, which is still a sickly business today.

Unit volumes grew 5.3% to 63.1 million, which was offset by 6.7% decline in average selling price (ASP). Due to higher volumes, the company’s HDD market share grew to 45.7% from 44.9% in the year-ago quarter.
- [By jaggom]
However, the good news for the investors is that this trend of strong prices is set to continue and the company is expected to yield better financial and operating results with surging demand for these products in the market. For example, a 16% jump in the average selling prices (ASP) of DRAM along with a 6% jump in volume propelled revenue from the segment 23% higher, while an 8% increase in NAND flash prices led to a 7% jump in revenue from this segment.

We can go through a long list of complicated reasoning, but the reason is very simple: Seagate increased its gross margin by around 50% (31.6% vs. 19.5%). This was accomplished thanks to the increased average selling price (ASP) of the hard disk drives.

Alliant also benefits from a narrow economic moat. Having long-term contracts with its customers, that generate consistent revenue for years, is a great advantage. The long-term programs have high switching costs for the customer. For example, ATK produced the composite materials for the Hellfire missile for years.
In addition, leading the solid rocket propellant market should ensure increased annual revenue. The new Space Launch System (SLS), for which ATK is working with the NASA, is expected be as successful as the Space Shuttle program years ago.
Most important, Alliant is the biggest supplier of small-caliber ammunition for the U.S. military. Furthermore, ATK has managed to get new contracts in the U.S. military sector, such as the second full-rate production of the advanced anti-radiation guided missiles. This contract with the U.S. Navy was signed for a total of $102.4 million.
New Contracts and acquisitions should increase profitability
Alliant has developed a composite technology that brought in new customers such as Airbus Group NV (EADSY) and Boeing Co (BA). In addition, the company’s composite material is required for the production of the F-35 jets. ATK produces around $1.8 million of the content in every F-35 jet that is constructed and generates $1.2 million worth of every A350.
New acquisitions create great expectations for shareholders, and this is the case of Alliant. The acquisition of Bushnell Group Holding Inc., that was completed in November of 2013, will amplify the customer base of Alliant´s Sporting Group even further, and is projected to increase earnings for the company.
Good Outlook for the Company’s Future Performance
The future looks bright for Alliant Techsystems Inc. The company´s financial position will improve due to a better operating margin, cash flow opt

Citigroup cited two potential catalysts for their upgrade, “First; Knight appears intent on resuming growth in ‘14 and may use an acquisition to get it. While it remains involved with USA Truck (NASDAQ: USAK), valuation sensitivity may prevent the deal from being complete, but Knight could refocus attention to another target. Second; we believe continued economic growth and Hours of Service restricted capacity could drive improvement in TL fundamentals, potentially aiding yield growth and margins.”

Despite what can best be described as a soft economy, small cap trucking stocks YRC Worldwide, Inc (NASDAQ: YRCW), Arkansas Best Corporation (NASDAQ: ABFS), Frozen Food Express Industries, Inc (NASDAQ: FFEX), Saia Inc (NASDAQ: SAIA) and USA Truck, Inc (NASDAQ: USAK) have been trucking some pretty impressive returns since the start of the year. In fact, these small cap trucking stocks are up anywhere from 72% to 150% or so since the start of the year despite the slow economy. Certainly trucking stocks provide a good indicator of how the economy is doing, but might investors be jumping the gun by pushing up these trucking stocks?
