Himax Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: HIMX) continues to hold its ground. Breakout watch over 11.50 ( click to enlarge )

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

A technology player that’s quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Himax Technologies (HIMX), which designs, develops and markets semiconductors that are critical components of flat panel displays. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 355%.

If you take a look at the chart for Himax Technologies, you’ll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong over the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $8.13 to its recent high of $11.45 a share. During that uptrend, shares of HIMX have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of HIMX within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in HIMX if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $11.45 a share to its 52-week high at $11.49 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 8.63 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then HIMX will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $14 to $15 a share.

Traders can look to buy HIMX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $10.02 a share, or near more support at $9.50 a share. One can also buy HIMX off strength once it starts to take out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Yesterday, American Airlines (AAL) rose 1.9%, while Delta Air Lines (DAL) gained 1.8%, Southwest Airlines (LUV) advanced 0.8% and United Continental (UAL) finished up 0.3%, even as the S&P 500 fell 0.5%.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The stock market is sinking today, but airline stocks like United Continental (UAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL) and American Airlines (AAL) have taken off.

Peter Smith for the Wall Street Journal

Shares of United Continental have gained 0.4% to $44.53 at 3:11 p.m., while Delta Air Lines has risen 1.5% to $33.21, American Airlines has advanced 0.9% to $36.45 and Southwest Airlines (LUV) is up 0.8% at $23.36. The S&P 500 has dropped 0.6%.

Helping boost airline stocks today: Raymond James analysts Savanthi Syth and James Parker upgraded its stock to Outperform from Market Perform. They explain why:

We are upgrading [United Continental] to Outperform from Market Perform with a $52 target price due to its earnings leverage to robust industry trends, easing competitive pressure at its key hubs, and attractive valuation. Our 1Q14E EPS is lowered from $(0.60) to $(1.00) because of the negative impact of extreme winter weather, particularly at United’s Chicago, Newark, and D.C. hubs. However, we believe investors will look beyond this and focus on strong industry demand, which has led to limited fare sales and two small fare increases in February. Moreover, we believe easing competitive pressure in its hubs should improve unit revenue performance beyond any success United may have in recalibrating its revenue management system. The stronger revenue outlook somewhat offsets the largely one-time weather-related impact in 1Q14.

Morgan Stanley’s John Godyn and Nathan Hong, meanwhile, double down on their thesis that something is different with the airlines this time around:

At a high level, we continue to believe that we’re in an airline bull market supported by two key pillars: (1) an airline macro goldilocks scenario based on the view that fuel prices are likely to trend flat to down while US GDP is upwardly biased favoring domestically levered companies, and (2) belief in the power of industry capacity discipline…Wit

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

As a result, shares of American Airlines has dropped 1.2% to $36.11 at 1:54 p.m. today, while United Continental Holdings (UAL) has fallen 2.1% to $44.27 and Delta Air Lines (DAL) is off 1.8% at $33.05.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

There’s been a lot of talk that investors are ready to shed their pessimistic views on airline stocks like Alaska Air (ALK) Delta Air Lines (DAL), United Continental Holdings (UAL) and American Airlines (AAL) and embrace them for the long term. The only problem: There’s no sign that they actually are.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Damian Illia]

Finally, I always like to see one of the most important financial ratios applying to stockholders, the best measure of performance for a firm’s management: the return on equity. The ratio has decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. Currently, a ROE of 45.9% is higher than all the 1,805 companies in the Diversified Industrials industry. Competitors such General Cable Corp. (BGC) has a very low ROE of 0.3% which is clearly not attractive. An alternative could be Belden Inc (BDC) with a positive ROE of 24%.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Udovich]

Although some view patent investors or speculators as nothing more than “patent trolls,” small cap patent stocks RPX Corporation (NASDAQ: RPXC), Marathon Patent Group Inc (OTCBB: MARA) and Endeavor IP Inc (OTCBB: ENIP) are a couple of interesting options that allow retail investors to invest in patents as they either invest in patents themselves or they provide patent related services. However, there could be risks associated with investing in patent stocks because a bi-partisan bill called the Innovation Act (H.R. 3309) is working its way through Congress to try and reign in the activities of so-called patent trolls or companies who go out and buy or license patents from others and then target alleged infringers with lawsuits.
