Top Performing Companies To Buy For 2014

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) has been on a roller coaster so far today, starting high and then tumbling 40 points after some unexpectedly dour economic data. Big banks started out great, with both Dow heavyweight Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS  ) and JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) up well above 1% by late morning. Both stayed green after the Dow dip, perhaps buoyed by the possibility that 2014 may be the year big banks get their groove back.

The U.S. Congress has two major matters on the docket today. One is the long-awaited confirmation of Janet Yellen as the new Federal Reserve chair, replacing departing chief Ben Bernanke. Senate Democrats are also moving to reinstate emergency extended unemployment benefits for 1.3 million people, after the program lapsed on Dec. 27. The program, in place since 2008, may be difficult to renew in the face of heavy Republican opposition.

Markets received some mixed economic news as well. The Census Bureau noted that factory orders were up 1.8% in November, the highest ever recorded, and beating estimates of 1.6%. However, the Institute for Supply Management’s Nonmanufacturing Business Survey registered a value of 53 for December, down from November’s 53.9 and far from the consensus of 54.8.

Cisco faces stiff competition from companies like Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Juniper Networks (JNPR). Broadly speaking, Cisco outperformed many of its competitors in terms of a revenue growth prospective. Compared to its peers, Cisco has a crucial advantage. It is able to better navigate dynamic technological environments to uniquely position itself in the industry.

Finally, I always like to see one of the most important financial ratios applying to stockholders, the best measure of performance for a firm’s management: the return on equity. The ratio has decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. This is a signal of major weakness. Moreover, it is worse than those shown in the table like Aegion Corporation (AEGN), EnerNOC Inc. (ENOC), MYR GroupInc. (MYRG) and Pike Corporation (PIKE).

Solar energy inverter maker Power-One (NASDAQ: PWER.DL  ) , and utility contractor Pike Electric (NYSE: PIKE  ) , both surged 44%. Power-One’s gain is in large part due to its being acquired, at a premium, by Switzerland-based power and automation technology giant ABB. In Thursday’s ETF analysis, evidence is presented that supports increasing demand for assets that get a tailwind from a weak U.S. dollar, including emerging markets (EEM) and foreign stocks (EFA). Casting a wider economic net, our market model told us to start buying stocks last week even with the threat of a U.S. default. Wednesday, we continued with our incremental allocation shifts by adding some exposure to the energy sector. Thursday, we sat tight holding long positions in small caps (IJR), Europe (FEZ), emerging markets and technology (QQQ). The upper bounds of the bullish S&P 500 trend channel shown below may offer some resistance to the market’s near vertical ascent.

  • [By Tom Aspray]

The news out of the Eurozone continues to improve as their Purchasing Managers Index rose to 51.7 in August consistent with an expanding economy. The chart shows a nice trend here suggesting that the worst by indeed be over. A deeper pullback in some of the euro ETFs like SPDR Euro STOXX 50 ETF (FEZ) should create a buying opportunity.
