We’ve written about the ongoing rise in food demand in a number of previous Investing Daily articles. There are two main factors driving this trend: the rising global population and increasing wealth, particularly in the developing world.
Below, we’ll examine an agriculture ETF that’s poised to capitalize on rising food demand, but first, here are a few reasons why rising food consumption—and prices—will be a fact of life for many years to come.
Basic Lack of Supply, Rising Demand Fuel This Agriculture ETF
The global population is not only eating more food but demanding better quality fare. For the most part, higher quality means more meat. That directly translates into rising crop consumption, because it takes about 10 pounds of corn and grain to produce a single pound of beef.
“Meanwhile, the amount of arable land is on the decline,” wrote Investing Daily analyst Benjamin Shepherd in a February 2012 article. “According to UN data, there was half an acre of arable land available for every person on earth in 1964. But due to development, pollution, population growth and a variety of other factors, that figure had dropped to 0.2 acres per capita by 2008.”

But what does this resurrection mean for investors? With a couple of exceptions, solar stocks hit a peak in 2008. First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) topped $300 a share briefly, SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR) topped $125 a share, JA Solar hit $120, Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) topped $40 and Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) reached its peak of more than $35 in mid-2007. At today’s prices one almost has to wonder if we are talking about the same companies. The only stock trading anywhere near its peak price of six years ago is Canadian Solar. JinkoSolar is near its all-time high again, but it was not publicly traded until mid-2010.

Yet, Capstone has a couple of threats. One is that if microturbine solutions become popular enough, General Electric and Caterpillar might well start modifying their larger-scale high-efficiency power-generation offerings toward the smaller-customer market. The other could come from the solar industry. With the rise in residential and small-commercial solar installations thanks to the success of SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY ) and SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR ) in providing easy financing, demand for Capstone’s microturbines could come under pressure as solar costs continue to decline.

Small cap green stocks Building Turbines Inc (OTCMKTS: BLDW), Virtual Sourcing, Inc (OTCMKTS: PGCX) and Unseen Solar, Inc (OTCMKTS: PCWT) have been getting some attention lately in various investment newsletters in part because some “green” is being paid out in the form of paid promotions or investor relation activity. Of course, there is nothing wrong with properly disclosed paid promotions, but you do need to remember that small cap stocks (especially those in new “green” industries) already come with risk. With that in mind, here is a quick reality check about these three green small cap stocks and whether you can expect to see some green in the form of profits:

Ameresco (NYSE: AMRC ) is one of the few large, independent energy efficiency service providers. The company’s principal service is the development, design, engineering and installation of projects that reduce the energy and operations and maintenance costs of its customers’ facilities. Ameresco has seen declining revenues recently because of unusually long lag times in getting its projects funded, but this seems a temporary setback.
