Over the past few years, dividend-paying stocks have played an important role in bolstering the income of many investors’ portfolios. But with interest rates creeping higher, you may have to get pickier about which dividend-paying stocks you own.
That’s because rising rates can make yield-oriented stocks less palatable — especially if investors think a company is unlikely to boost its payout in the future. Research by BNY Mellon has found that the top 20% of stocks in terms of yield in Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index lagged the index twice during the three periods since 1993 in which both short-term and long-term rates climbed. It wasn’t a complete shutout for the high yielders, says John Bailer, a portfolio manager for Boston Company Asset Management, which is owned by BNY Mellon. “But the point is, in that type of environment, you have to be selective.”

The most disappointing investment in the portfolio for 2013 was InterDigital (IDCC). This stock declined approximately 28% during the year, despite posting roughly 25% operating margins. Our thesis on IDCC is that the company should benefit from its wireless technology patents as more smartphones and mobile tablets are connected to the in ternet. IDCC creates wireless technology, applies for patents for the technology it creates, and then licenses its technology to manufacturers who produce the aforementioned products. In the past, Nokia, Samsung, Apple, LG, and many other manufacturers hav e licensed the company’s technology to use in their products and paid IDCC royalties.

Endeavor IP isn’t the only publicly-traded intellectual property enforcement company out there. It is, however, the only one to focus on quality over quantity. Whereas other players like patent portfolio names like InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) and Vringo, Inc. (NASDAQ:VRNG) will literally buy patents by the hundreds – perhaps sometimes without even knowing what some of those patents even cover – in an effort to arm itself with any and every possible patent for any and every contingency. Most are likely worthless, which means companies like InterDigital or Vringo may have wasted shareholder money by buying IP that isn’t capable of bearing revenue.

Alamy You can never know in advance all the news that will move the market in a given week, but some things you can see coming. From a direct marketer of wellness supplements stepping up with healthy financials (we hope) to Olive Garden’s parent checking in with a report on the dreary state of casual dining, here are some of the things that will help shape the week that lies ahead on Wall Street. Monday — Human Nature Nature’s Sunshine Products (NATR) distributes natural wellness products through its growing direct sales force of more than 340,000 reps worldwide, and it also happens to be kicking off the new trading week with its latest financials. Analysts expect to see healthy bottom-line growth in Monday morning’s quarterly report. They predict a profit of $0.35 a share, well ahead of the $0.28 a share it rang up a year earlier. The rub is that Nature’s Sunshine has come up short against Wall Street profit targets in three of the past four quarters. Tuesday — Photoshop These Financials Adobe Systems (ADBE) reports on Tuesday. The desktop publishing software giant behind Photoshop, Flash, and PDF authoring platform Acrobat has seen better days. The market’s bracing for a dip in revenue and profitability in its latest quarter. That probably isn’t much of a surprise. There are now free or nearly free Web-based alternatives to many of Adobe’s products. The alternatives may not have as many features, but they’re more than enough for casual users. Adobe is going to need new products to get back on the growth track. Wednesday — New Home Sales Brewing One of the economy’s biggest turnaround stories is the residential real estate revival. Folks are buying houses again and they’re willing to pay more for them, which is making developers a lot of money. After all, their component costs aren’t rising at the same clip as home prices. We’ll get a great snapshot of the industry this week. KB Home (KBH) reports on Wednesday, and Lennar (LEN) follows a day lat

Top Mid Cap Stocks To Invest In Right Now: HeartWare International Inc (HTWR)
Heartware International, Inc. (HeartWare), incorporated on June 25, 2010, develops and manufactures small implantable heart pumps, or ventricular assist devices, for the treatment of advanced heart failure. The HeartWare Ventricular Assist System (the HeartWare System), which includes a ventricular assist device (VAD), or blood pump, patient accessories and surgical tools, is designed to provide circulatory support for patients in the advanced stage of heart failure. The core of the HeartWare System is a continuous flow blood pump, the HVAD Pump, which is a full-output device capable of pumping up to 10 liters of blood per minute. The HeartWare System is designed to be implanted adjacent to the heart, avoiding the abdominal surgery generally required to implant similar devices. In August 2012, it acquired World Heart Corporation. As of December 31, 2012, the HeartWare System has been implanted outside of the United States at approximately 168 health care sites in 28 countr ies. In December 2013, HeartWare International Inc acquired CircuLite, Inc.
Proprietary Pump Technology
The HeartWare System is full-output centrifugal pump designed to be implanted in the chest, directly adjacent to the heart. At the core of the Company’s technology platform is its hybrid system for suspending the impeller, which is the only moving part within the pump. The impeller is suspended within the pump housing by the opposing forces of passive magnets and hydrodynamic thrust generated by the pump impeller, which circulates a cushion of
blood. Once power is applied to the device and the impeller begins to rotate, there are no points of mechanical contact within the pump, thus providing a completely wearless pumping system.
The HeartWare System
The HeartWare System consists of the HVAD Pump, a small, permanently implantable VAD, patient accessories and surgical tools. The HVAD Pump is capable of generating up to 10 liters of blood flow per minute. With a displaced v! olume of only 50 cubic centimeters and a mass of 140 grams, the HVAD Pump is the only full-output pump implantable in the pericardial space, directly adjacent to the heart. It is also the only pump designed to be implanted above the diaphragm in all eligible patients.
The HeartWare MVAD
The miniaturized ventricular assist device (MVAD) is a miniaturized blood pump intended for chronic heart failure patients. The device is a full-output axial flow pump with a fully suspended rotor and a displacement volume approximately one-third that of the HVAD Pump.
The Company competes with Thoratec Corporation, Jarvik Heart, MicroMed Technology, Inc, Berlin Heart AG, Terumo Heart, Inc., Sunshine Heart, Inc and CircuLite, Inc., Evaheart Medical USA, Inc.

As outlined in this article, we think Saphris should be a good fit in Forest´s central nervous system (CNS) franchise. Additionally, Forest´s acquisition of Aptalis looks attractive, especially taking into account that Namenda will be facing generic competition from 2015.
