TOKYO–Japan unexpectedly swung into a current account deficit in October as its massive goods and services trade deficit eradicated the benefits of solid income from overseas investment.

The Y127.9 billion deficit in the current account, the broadest measure of Japan’s trade with the rest of the world, was much worse than the Y420.8 billion surplus the country registered a year earlier, data released by the Ministry of Finance showed Monday. Economists surveyed by the Nikkei and The Wall Street Journal had been expecting a surplus of Y160.1 billion for the month.

A Y1.092 trillion trade deficit was largely responsible for the red ink, the data showed.

PSA fills a need that’s not likely to disappear. In the latest fiscal year ended Dec. 31, 2013, PSA generated core funds from operations of $7.44 — 11.4% higher than in 2012. Same-store rental income increased 5.4% year-over-year due to higher rents and higher occupancies. It’s a winning combination that over time has proved successful. Although it’s only yielding 3.3% at the moment, it’s a very stable stock, having seen a negative return just once in the past decade. I like its odds.

This is the brand child of Public Storage founder Wayne Hughes, who started the company in 2011 to take advantage of falling prices in the single-family home market. Private equity firms such as Blackstone Group (BX), Hughes and others have been actively buying up houses on the cheap with plans to rent them out until prices rise to the point where they’re no longer worth holding on to. As a result of this intense competition, prices have risen faster than anticipated — slowing the number of home purchases made by institutional investors.

After an initial bump in Silver Bay, the stock has had a horrible 2013, now trading close to all-time lows. Recently, a couple of other IPOs in the sector have come to market with weak receptions. Both American Homes 4 Rent (NYSE: AMH  ) and American Residential Properties (NYSE: ARPI  ) offer different twists to the general thesis of investing in single-family rental properties to take advantage of the weakness in housing prices and the increased demand for rentals.

We learned during this case that T-Mobile was in bed with the crammers.

T-Mobile collected 35 percent to 40 percent of the charges, even after being alerted by customers that they were bogus, the FTC alleges. That earned the company hundreds of millions of dollars, the agency said. “We learned during this case that T-Mobile was in bed with the crammers,” said Travis LeBlanc, head of the FTC’s enforcement bureau. He was referring to the third-party companies that put charges on phone bills for text services. Many consumers aren’t aware that third-party companies can do that, the regulators say. ‘Not a Maximum’ Officials told reporters on a conference call that the $90 million was a floor, not a maximum, for the amount that T-Mobile could end up paying. “It could be well north of $100 million,” said Bill Sorrell, the attorney general of Vermont. A T-Mobile spokeswoman said the company had no immediate comment on the settlement. T-Mobile began a refund program in July and has said it has notified current and former customers. The company didn’t provide an estimate of how much it has paid in refunds to date. T-Mobile US, based in Bellevue, Washington, is controlled by Germany’s Deutsche Telekom. It’s the No. 4 U.S. cellphone carrier after Verizon Wireless (VZ), AT&T Mobility (T) and Sprint (S). The settlement must be approved by a federal court in Seattle, where the FTC filed its lawsuit. Under the settlement, T-Mobile must provide full refunds to all its customers affected by the “cramming,” and the amount it pays in refunds and fines must reach at least $90 million. If the payout doesn’t reach that amount, the difference between what T-Mobile pays and $90 million will go to the FTC for additional relief to consumers, consumer education or other uses. Explicit Consent Required T-Mobile also must contact all of its affected customers, both current and former, to tell them about the refund program and how they can make a claim. That must be done in a

AT&T (T) today acquired the Mexican wireless provider Lusacell for $2.5 billion. The acquisition includes company’s licenses, network, retail stores and some 8.6 million wireless subscribers.

  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty Images WASHINGTON — The U.S. government has sued AT&T, alleging the No. 2 U.S. wireless carrier sold consumers unlimited data plans but would reduce their Internet speeds once they exceeded a certain amount of data. The Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday that this throttling of Internet feeds was deceptive and that in some cases data speeds were slowed by nearly 90 percent. FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez said that AT&T (T) wanted to retain longtime customers and so allowed them to buy unlimited data plans, in some cases after new customers were no longer offered unlimited plans. Then they unilaterally changed the terms, she said. “They stopped providing the service that customers understood they had purchased when they entered into their contract,” she said. “Customers would be subject to an early termination fee if they wanted to get out of their existing contract.” AT&T called the allegations “baseless” and said the practice was needed to manage network resources. “We have been completely transparent with customers since the very beginning,” said Wayne Watts, AT&T’s general counsel. “This program has affected only about 3 percent of our customers, and before any customer is affected, they are also notified by text message.” More than 3.5 million customers with legacy unlimited data plans had their Internet speeds slowed more than 25 million times by AT&T’s practice, which began in October 2011, the FTC said. AT&T says on its support website that people with certain plans can experience data slowdowns once they exceed certain limits. Customers with a 3G smartphone will experience slowdowns after using 3 gigabytes of data in a month, while those with 4G LTE smartphones can use 5 gigabytes before potential slowdowns. Those who dislike the throttling can use Wi-Fi or switch to a different plan, AT&T says on its website. AT&T closed up 0.6 percent at $34.33 a share. Federal Communica

At this point I would like to circle back to a subject we are perhaps most often asked about, and that is why do we continue to hold such a concentrated position (nearly 32%) in our three largest holdings? First of all, it is important to note that over the past two year s we have actually reduced our holdings in all three stocks. Fortunately for our shareholders long – term price appreciation, particularly in Universal Health Services, Inc. and Precision Castparts Corp., has been exceptionally strong (in the case of Universal Health Services, Inc., which was purchased in 1999 and 2000 at an average cost per share of $9.41 and ha d increased to a price per share of $81.26 at the end of 2013, and Precision Castparts Corp. which was bought in 2000 at a n average cost per share of $9.82 and ha d increased to a price per share of $26 9. 3 0 at the end of 2013). In our view these two companies remain in the ” sweet spot ” of two compelling long – term investment opportunities. In the case of Universal Health Services, Inc., the company i s likely to be one of the prime beneficiaries of expanding health care insurance coverage dictated by the Affordable Care Act * ** ( ” Obama – care ” ). Unique to Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHT) is its position in mental health services which account s for three – q uarters of its earnings before deductions for interest expense, taxes, depreciation and amortization . Precision Castparts Corp. (PCP) is a prime component supplier to the commercial aircraft manufacturers. Indicative of the attractiveness of this business was The Boeing Company ‘ s recent announcement that its year – end backlog was 5,080 planes compared to the 648 jets delivered in 2013. By the same token, Airbus ‘ (a subsidiary of Airbus Group NV) backlog at the end of November was 5,400 versus the 562 planes del ivered in the first eleven months of the year.

Murray Close, Warner Bros./AP From a major banking institution kicking off the new earnings season to the most-anticipated theme park debut of the year staging its grand opening, here are some things that will help shape the week that lies ahead on Wall Street. Monday — Food for Thought The market’s going to get off to a slow start on the news front. That’s not a surprise given that it was closed Friday for Independence Day. One company that will be in the news on Monday is food and industrial products maker Penford (PENX). Penford’s wide range of products include food ingredients, pet and animal products, sustainable bioproducts, starches for paper and packaging products and biofuels. Analysts see Penford earning 21 cents a share, but keep in mind that it has come up short against Wall Street expectations in each of the three previous quarters. Tuesday — Harry Potter Central Florida will be a bit busier than usual on Tuesday when Comcast’s (CMCSK) Universal Orlando has its grand opening of the new Diagon Alley expansion to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It’s been a rough start. July 8 wasn’t the opening date that the park originally wanted, judging by the fact that it had “The Tonight Show” and “Today” run weeklong tie-ins a few weeks ago. Conveniently for Comcast, it owns both the Universal theme parks and NBC. However, with the expansion’s indoor coaster proving unreliable — and even Universal pass holders being denied early access to attractions outside of the new Hogwarts Express train ride — it could be an interesting debut. The crowds should be huge, the expectations lofty. Wednesday — Mopping Up WD-40 (WDFC) reports on Wednesday afternoon. This is the company behind the multi-use lubricant. It also offers industrial cleaners, toilet sanitizers and other compounds. WD-40 didn’t work out for its shareholders last time out. It posted better than expected 9 percent growth in revenue, but earnings fell just short of expectations. WD-4

Another reason this fund looks attractive (at least to me) is that Rubicon Minerals (NYSEMKT: RBY  ) is one of its largest holdings at 6.02% of its assets as of May 10, 2013. Rubicon is in the late stages of the development process for the F2 Gold System, which has yielded drilling assessments as high as 767 grams/ton. F2 appears to be just as bountiful in gold well below the surface as it is near the surface, which could mean a very long and profitable mine life for Rubicon.

    Valuation

Over the next five years growth in the Asian market will likely boost the overall modest premium growth rate, averaging it at 2%, while the total revenue CAGR recovers to 3% after the steep declines reported since 2012. Furthermore, Manulife’s ROE will continue its current upward trend, increasing from 2013’s 10.9% to an average 12% by 2018, accompanied by the steadily expanding net margins of 16.8%. While it will take some time for the company’s growth to accelerate, I feel bullish about management’s optimism regarding its business shift, and see the dividend yield and returns on equity as solid benefits for a long term investment. Moreover, the firm is currently trading at a 10% price discount relative to the industry average of 14.0x, making it a relatively inexpensive buy.
