In June 2012, Vivendi floated its then $8.1 billion stake in ATVI. However, the offering was not well received as there are very few companies that could afford to take over ATVI given its large market cap. Mentioned in the article, it is very likely that there are only three possible strategic buyers with the potential interest and capability to make such an acquisition: Microsoft, Disney, and Asian internet and gaming company Tencent (TCEHY.PK), which has a ~$60 billion market cap. Shortly after in August, Vivendi gave up on the sale.

The main on-line competitors are:
Qunar.com, a travel website owned by Baidu (BIDU) and a few venture fundseLong (LONG), backed by Tencent (TCEHY.PK) and Expedia (EXPE). Analyst expect it to generate $163M in revenue next year
That is pretty serious competition, needless to say. Having the backing of Baidu or Expedia offers several advantages, but Ctrip is the biggest and most established company. It’s quite difficult to compare Qunar.com to Ctrip, for the simple sake that Qunar is a private company. However, there can be little doubt that it constitutes serious competition:

Shares in Sohu.com (SOHU) continued their rapid rise, hitting yet another fresh 52-week high during the session, as the company announced the special dividend from Sohou yesterday (press release located here). Sohu.com will receive nearly $161.2 million in the transaction which is part of the overall $400 million deal with Tencent (TCEHY.PK) which was announced not too long ago. These are exciting times in the internet space as we move from computers to mobile devices, but China’s internet landscape looks like the ‘Wild West’ right now and we expect to see further deals as companies jockey for position in their respective niches and consolidation begins as the larger players look to step up growth and gain exposure to new business segments.

Given my druthers, were I asked to recommend a truck rental shop today, I think I’d have to go with U-Haul owner AMERCO (NASDAQ: UHAL ) instead. It’s got the free cash flow that Ryder lacks, plus a cheaper P/E, a slightly faster growth rate, and a smaller debt load. Honestly, I don’t “love” AMERCO either — but it’s a heck of a better value than Ryder.

That would be great news for the GEO Group (NYSE: GEO ) and Corrections Corp. of America (NYSE: CXW ) , which are contracted out through the government to run and service prisons around the country.

Getty Images Recently, a client came to me with a difficult dilemma. He was retired and living comfortably but didn’t have much room in his budget for additional expenses. His son was a high-ranking executive with a midsize company. He was married, with three children, all of whom were in private school in New York City. The son lost his job as a consequence of restructuring. He was having difficulty finding another position at anything close to his prior income. He had been looking without success for more than six months. He was at a point where he could no longer meet his substantial monthly expenses. He asked my client to provide the funds necessary to maintain his lifestyle and the education of his children, until he was able to “land on his feet.” My client could afford to make these payments for a limited period of time but his retirement plans would be jeopardized if the time period was prolonged and if his son did not pay him back. He asked for my advice. For many Americans, the goal of helping children and grandchildren pay for their education and preserving wealth to leave to their children is an important goal. Unfortunately, the 2008 recession reduced the confidence of investors in their ability to meet those goals. According to a report prepared by Ameriprise Financial (AMP), only 24 percent of those surveyed in 2012 were “very confident” they could help with education and only 16 percent had confidence in their ability to leave an inheritance to their children. What is more troubling is the finding that only one-third of those surveyed felt very confident in their ability to provide adequately for themselves and their family. My client had never discussed his finances with his children. He is not alone. More than one-third of the parents of boomers believe they haven’t adequately discussed finances with their children, according to the Ameriprise study. Their children were often reluctant to engage in these discussions with aging parents b

2. Congress is eyeballing the REIT sector’s special tax status
The U.S. Congress is currently going over the tax code with a fine-tooth comb looking for loopholes, and the REIT industry’s special tax status is coming under review. Though The Wall Street Journal notes that a change in the law that allows REITs to avoid corporate taxes on income as long as they pay out 90% of earnings isn’t certain, neither is it out of the realm of possibility — possibly making dividends like those paid by American Capital Agency and its hybrid cousin American Capital Mortgage (NASDAQ: MTGE ) a lot less hefty.
