Top Japanese Stocks To Buy For 2015

As the auto industry rapidly changes, distinctions that were once clear in terms of which cars or manufacturers are truly “American” have blurred. Domestic brands have been bought and sold by foreign companies, while many Japanese automakers boast significant production from domestically located factories.

Cars.com has created its own system, the American-Made Index, which considers a variety of factors in determining which vehicles have the most red, white, and blue in their veins.

While rankings like this may seem irrelevant to investors, big-ticket purchases such as automobiles and homes are often done with the heart and not the head. Many people buy domestically manufactured vehicles on principle, and being “more American” can be as important a car’s price and features.

A high ranking in one direction or another can boost loyalty and pricing power as well.

Considering all of these factors, I selected the best automaker for a recovering U.S. auto industry in the following slide show.

  • [By James Brumley]

If the idea of Carl Icahn wanting to split a company up seems vaguely familiar, too … well, that’s hardly anything new, either. Icahn was the key driver behind Transocean (RIG) opting to divest some of its master limited partnership holdings, he desperately wanted OshKosh (OSK) to spin off JLG, and somehow Icahn got credit for sparking Motorola’s (MSI) spinoff of its mobile phone business.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tim Melvin]

The safe and cheap undervalued stocks will go right up, but your chances of being destroyed when the party is over are diminished. Stocks like Richardson Electronics (RELL) and Transworld Entertainment (TWMC) have the ability to go up as the market bubbles higher but their asset value will act as sort of a floor in a decline.

Also included in the Utility is System Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Entergy Corporation that owns or leases 90% of Grand Gulf. Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Lee Jackson]

Entergy Corp. (NYSE: ETR) is also a stock to Sell at UBS and hit its list recently. The company has decided to stay the course with its nuclear power plants, and that does not sit that well with the UBS team. Possible litigation risks and the always possible nuclear accident risks are outweighing the positive dividend and demand for energy. Investors are paid a 5.3% dividend. Merrill Lynch raised its price objective from $60 to $62. The consensus target is $63.13. Entergy closed Friday at $64.49.

In addition to beating the market since the beginning of the year, diversified energy utilities, such as MDU Resources Group Inc (NYSE: MDU), Dominion Resources Inc (NYSE: D) and Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE), significantly outperformed pure-play or predominantly all-electric utilities, such as Duke Energy Corp (NYSE: DUK) and Entergy Corp (NYSE: ETR), by as much as several percentage points (See Chart B).

Interestingly, among top performers, there was no dominant strategy for exploiting natural gas demand, as these firms were involved in all aspects of the value chain–from exploration and production to distribution and storage. These companies have not only been benefiting from a natural gas surplus, but also from the pressing need to expand US energy infrastructure to deliver this newfound bounty to businesses and households.

Chart B: Diversified Energy Utilities Outperformed Electric-Only Peers

  • [By Richard Stavros]

In fact, investment opportunities in this niche could soon be on the rise. Several utilities have been considering creating standalone transmission companies this year, including Xcel Energy Inc (NYSE: XEL). But whether it’s a standalone company or the sale of transmission assets to a transmission company, regulatory approval will still be key. For instance, regulators declined Entergy Corp’s (NYSE: ETR) sale of its transmission assets to transmission company ITC Holdings Corp (NYSE: ITC) in 2013.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Next Monday, Endeavour Silver (NYSE: EXK  ) will release its latest quarterly results. The key to making smart investment decisions on stocks reporting earnings is to anticipate how they’ll do before they announce results, leaving you fully prepared to respond quickly to whatever inevitable surprises arise. That way, you’ll be less likely to make an uninformed knee-jerk reaction to news that turns out to be exactly the wrong move.

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Endeavor Silver (NYSE: EXK  ) sank 58%. It’s focused on silver mines in Mexico and also mines gold. Last month, due to one of its three mines outperforming, management raised silver-production projections by 20%, representing a 34% increase over 2012 levels. Gold-production forecasts were hiked 48%. Not all mines are performing well, though, and the price of silver has fallen, so the company has been cutting costs, in part via layoffs.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Yet silver miners are producing record amounts of the metal. Coeur Mining (NYSE: CDE  ) said that silver production jumped 21% in the second quarter to 4.6 million ounces, with full-year production still anticipated to hit 18 million-19.5 million ounces, while Endeavor Silver (NYSE: EXK  ) hit new records as production surged 48% to 1.5 million ounces.

Price’s new buys in the quarter were Oenok (OKE), Dolby Labs (DLB) and T-Mobile (TMUS). I don’t find any of those particularly exciting at current levels, but I’m willing to acknowledge that Michael Price is a lot smarter than I am and probably sees value I am missing in these stocks. What I find much more interesting was that Price was doing a lot more selling than buying in the third quarter.

    Enter Dolby 3D
That’s why I’m so intrigued by Monday’s news that Dolby (NYSE: DLB  ) and Philips (NYSE: PHG  ) have collaborated in a joint project to create a new content delivery specification for the Dolby 3D format, which will be part of a “suite of technologies” to more easily allow content creators the ability to make, deliver, and play back glasses-free 3-D content.

Fusion-io (NYSE: FIO  ) will release its quarterly report on Wednesday, and investors are nervous about the expected plunge in revenue that they expect to result in the data-storage specialist’s year-ago profit turning into a loss. Yet even in the face of much larger competitors EMC (NYSE: EMC  ) and Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC  ) , many still hold out hope that Fusion-io earnings will eventually recover and help the share price gain back some of its long-term losses.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Hard-disk maker Western Digital (WDC) is another name that enjoyed market-crushing momentum last year, dishing out 94% gains to investors who bet on the computer storage stock this time last year. The computer storage business still has some enormous tailwinds pushing at its back right now, and those should continue to propel the world’s biggest hard drive maker to new highs in the year ahead.

Worldwide, demand for storage is increasing like never before. That’s because, today, consumers carry around devices that record HD video and photos, store data-intensive applications, and store it all in the cloud. That means that storage is critical both on consumers’ local PCs and on the server farms that continue to sprout up.

For conventional hard drive makers, solid state drives represent the future. For now, their costs are keeping SSDs from all but the most performance-demanding tasks, but eventually it’s likely they’ll supplant HDDs as the standard storage medium. While that’s been a threat to firms like WDC, recent acquisitions like STEC should help to boost Western Digital’s SSD capabilities.

Western Digital currently has a solid cash position: around $2.5 billion net of debt as of the most recent quarter. And that number is likely to be closer to $3 billion by the time next quarter rolls around. That’s enough dry powder to pay for around 12.5% of WDC’s current market capitalization right now, a fact that helps reduce the risk in shares after such a big run higher.

If WDC can continue to use cash in a smart way, investors stand to keep benefiting.
