Top Japanese Stocks For 2016

UBS analyst Michael Binetti and team warn investors not to get too excited about Urban Outfitters’ (URBN) same-store-sales surprise:

Reuters

1Q SSS Trending +LSDbut Noisy; Raising Our 1Q SSS Estimate Slightly: We’re raising our 1Q SSS to flat from -1% previously. In its FY16 (Jan-16 end) 10K filing on 3/31,Urban Outfitters reported its 1Q17 (Jan-17 end) SSS are trending +LSD. We believe trends are at the low end of +LSD (likely +1%)and we estimate that the Feb+Mar period gets a +1-1.5pp lift from an extra day vs LY (Unlike most other specialty retailers that report 4-5-4 week quarters,Urban Outfitters is based on a true calendar monthso Leap Yr is incremental). On our math,Urban Outfitters’ underlying trend is likely close to flat in Feb+Mar. April should be a lower volume month in the qtr, but visibility into April trends for the industry is low. An Easter shift into March (vs Easter in April last year) is a headwind to Apriland April weather could be unfavorable YOY (based on comments from our 3/29 weather expert conference call). That said, based on our conversation with the comp any we believe that compares should ease in the back half of April, which could offset other headwinds.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

With a neutral sector rating, we are working on evaluating risks to negative calls, and identifying potential value opportunities. Last week we noted more work might be worthwhile on Wabco Holdings (WBC), Terex, Manitowoc (MTW), and Caterpillar, two of those names have rallied for other reasons but the attractive price made the upside/downside skew up. We remain positive (OW) on Allison Transmission Holdings (ALSN) & United Rentals. Our and consensus 2017Allison Transmission Holdings estimates have fallen by 2% vs. ~15% for the group, while the shares are down 10% since launch. We continue to see United Rentals as the best value in our group…

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.
