Top Information Technology Companies To Buy For 2015

If you’re a car brand, you’re the talk of the town in Houston.

If you’re a financial service brand, Jacksonville is where folks are likely to chat you up.

And if you’re some sort of travel services company, Miami is the hub for brand chatter.

Talk creates sales. Marketers are just beginning to discover that consumers in some cities are far more talkative about their brands than folks living in other cities.

For that matter, residents of these same three cities — Houston, Jacksonville and Miami — are more likely than residents of any other major U.S. cities to have verbal or online conversations about brands of any kind.

“Marketers recognize that consumers trust each other more than anyone else,” says Ed Keller, CEO of Keller Fay Group, the market research specialist behind the new study to be released Monday, America’s Most Talkative Cities. “Every brand wants to be a brand that people are talking about.”

Back in summer 2011, we ran a Barron’s Take about VF Corp’s (VFC) $2 billion purchase of Timberland. At that time, we noted that the purchase price represented a 40% premium, while retail maven Brian Sozzi called it “a steal.”

Fast forward to present day and it seems that others are coming around to that view. In a report today, UBS analyst Michael Binetti writes that Timberland is a “billion dollar brand with 20% profit growth potential.” He explains:

[The] Timberland brand went from being a more than 10% revenue grower through 2017 to a 13% revenue grower through 2019—and became VF Corp’s third $1 billion plus brand with over 12% long-term top-line power. Further, VF Corp. expects Timberland EBIT to grow 20% for five-years (with operating margin to expand to 18% by 2019, versus 15% by 2017 previously).

While the overall EPS impact to VF Corp. is small (we estimate the Timberland guide update adds about a nickel to our 2016 EPS), VF Corp’s clearly emphasized confidence behind Timberland as a major long-term growth driver…

In our view, VF Corp’s stock offers a unique combination of: 1) best in big cap apparel organic growth (new Timberland guidance implies corporate revenue growth could reach 9% in 2015 with visible margin opportunities through accelerating favorable business mix, down 25% lower cotton costs); and 2) high potential for a significant brand acquisition (with debt/EBITDA now below Timberland acquisition levels)

It appears investors agree. Shares of VF Corp have gained 1.3% to $67.04 at 3:10 p.m. today.

The company has a current ROE of 19.24% which is higher than the one exhibited by PVH Corp. (PVH) and the industry median. In general, analysts consider ROE ratios in the 15-20% range as representing attractive levels for investment. So for investors looking at higher levels of ROE, VF Corp. (VFC) and Hanesbrand Inc. (HBI) could be the options. Coach Inc. (COH) and Michael Kors have very good ratios. It is very important to understand this metric before investing and it is important to look at the trend in ROE over time.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James Brumley]

Still, for the nimble who know when to get out, OREX is one of the few cheap stocks worth a closer look.

    Sucampo Pharmaceuticals (SCMP)

Finally, though the price of $7.60 clearly qualifies it as one pf the cheapest of the cheap stocks out there in the pharmaceutical world, that’s not the reason Sucampo Pharmaceuticals (SCMP) may be worth a look here. It’s the 30% slide we’ve seen SCMP stock suffer since peaking in mid-January. It’s not a pullback that’s bound to go unchallenged by the bulls.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 stock that’s starting to trend within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Sucampo Pharmaceuticals (SCMP), which is engaged in the discovery, development and commercialization of proprietary drugs based on prostones, and other novel drug technologies. This stock is off to a decent start in 2013, with shares up by 26%.

If you take a look at the chart for Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, you’ll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last four months, with shares dumping hard from its high of $10.48 to its recent low of $5.40 a share. During that downtrend, shares of SCMP have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, the downside volatility for SCMP looks to be over in the short-term since the stock has started to reverse its downtrend and enter an uptrend. That reverse is quickly pushing shares of SCMP within range of triggering a major breakout trade above a key downtrend line.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SCMP if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $6.33 to $6.66 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 115,383 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then SCMP will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $7.09 to $7.67 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give SCMP a chance to tag $8 to $9 a share.

Traders can look to buy SCMP off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $5.58 to $5.40 a share. One can also buy SCMP off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

What do Acasti Pharma Inc. (NASDAQ:ACST), Kandi Technologies Group Inc. (NASDAQ:KNDI), and Amarantus Bioscience Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB:AMBS) have in common? Not a lot, if you’re simply looking at their business lines. Kandi Technologies Group makes electric cars, and even though Amarantus Bioscience Holdings and Acasti Pharma are both in the pharmaceutical arena, they’re not too much alike. There is one common element among AMBS, ACST, and KNDI right now, however… they’re three of the market’s most bullish setups. Anyone looking for a new trading idea here should start with one of these three.

Judging from the company it’s keeping Green Automotive Co. (OTCMKTS:GACR) may have just made its way into the upper echelon of small cap stock opportunities. The electric car company joins Elite Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OTCBB:ELTP), Amarantus Bioscience Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB:AMBS), and only three other companies as Wall-Street.com’s “Best 6 Stocks” for January of 2014. As one of the top information resources for investors – particularly in terms of information regarding small and micro cap stocks – being named among the site’s top pick is an accolade for AMBS, ELTP, and GACR. Even more impressive is that Green Automotive Co. was the only consumer-goods name among those six. Amarantus Bioscience Holdings and Elite Pharmaceuticals are biotechnology names… an industry that can and often does attract a lot of attention just by the nature of the business. The other three names making the “Best 6” list were an energy explorer, a power-management technology manufacturer, and presc ription/medical food producer. For an electric car manufacturer to make the list speaks quite highly of GACR.
