Paul Sakuma/AP There were plenty of winners and losers this week, with a few potential mergers coming undone and a maker of electronic learning toys getting schooled. Here’s a rundown of the week’s smartest moves and biggest blunders. Trex (TREX) — Winner It’s summer, and apparently a lot of homeowners decided to invest in sprucing up their outdoor living space. Trex posted strong quarterly results on Monday. The leading maker of weather-resistant wood-alternative decking saw its sales climb 23 percent, and adjusted pre-tax earnings soared 62 percent. There was some weakness earlier this earnings season out of other home improvement specialists, so it’s a welcome surprise to see Trex holding up so well. The good news doesn’t end there. Trex is eyeing accelerating growth, calling for revenue to climb a better than expected 27 percent in the current quarter. Mergers — Loser In any week there seems to be a couple of acquisitions or mergers, but sometimes Cupid isn’t feeling up to the arrow-slinging task. A couple of big potential buyouts came undone this week when Rupert Murdoch pulled his offer to buy out Time Warner (TWX), and Sprint (S) nixed plans to snap up T-Mobile (TMUS). The deals fell apart for different reasons. Murdoch just didn’t have an interest in chasing Time Warner’s stock higher in a hostile buyout bid. Sprint realized that regulators weren’t going to be happy unless there were four major independent wireless carriers out there. Instant Gratification — Winner Amazon.com (AMZN) announced on Wednesday that it was expanding its same-day delivery service to six more cities. Prime shoppers in Baltimore, Dallas, Indianapolis, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, metro areas will now be able to place an order on the website by noon and pay $5.99 to have it delivered that same day. Naturally the selection is limited to items that Amazon stocks locally, but the one knock on Amazon about having to wait a day or two at least for shipme

There’s a bargain in the premium aisle
In investing, it rarely pays to buy what’s already in fashion. While Michael Kors (NYSE: KORS ) and Kate Spade (NYSE: KATE ) trade at 24 times earnings, Coach is on sale for just 11 times earnings. Although Coach’s stock is out of style, it represents a compelling bargain for long-term investors. Michael Kors and Kate Spade together generate the same amount of revenue as Coach, yet their combined enterprise value is twice the latter’s enterprise value.

Cindy Ord/Getty Images It may be back-to-school shopping season, but this doesn’t mean that moms — or other well-to-do fashionistas — can’t snap up a seasonal bargain. There may never be a better time to buy designer totes, satchels or shoulder bags. This is the time of year when Coach (COH), Michael Kors (KORS) and Kate Spade (KATE) usually discount some of their dated product lines ahead of new fall arrivals. But the markdowns may be even juicier this summer. Gross margins are contracting, and inventory is starting to build up. This is bad news for handbag makers and investors, but it should be good news for folks looking to buy a luxury purse. Let’s Fly Coach Coach is the largest of the three luxury handbag makers, but that’s about to change. After yielding market share to Michael Kors and to a lesser extent Kate Spade in recent years, analysts see Michael Kors overtaking Coach this upcoming holiday shopping season. Coach isn’t doing very well. Sales and adjusted earnings are fell 7 percent and 35 percent, respectively, in its latest quarter. However, investors were braced for an even sloppier showing. Strong international sales, particularly in China, helped offset some but clearly not all of the domestic shortfalls (Coach suffered a 16 percent decline in North American sales). Coach was the only one of the three publicly traded luxury handbag makers to see its stock climb the trading day after announcing results. The other two are growing, but there are problematic signs for investors across all three players. Calling a Spade a Spade Kate Spade is the smallest of the three, and it was the last of the three to report. After unloading its Juicy Couture apparel and Lucky Brand premium denim lines, Kate Spade has been able to focus on its booming premium handbag and accessories business. That’s a subtle but important difference especially when it doesn’t have a marquee name on the masthead to bring people into the “lifestyle.” Where Michael Kors (NYSE: KORS ) and Kate Spade (NYSE: KATE ) can turn to their company founders to attract consumers to their brand extensions of stationery, personal organizers, pajamas, and eyewear, Coach has had to rely upon the hired help to generate the same cachet.

After announcing a 30.4% increase in comparable sales, Kate Spade (NYSE: KATE ) shot up in early morning trading on Tuesday this week. But by noon, the stock had fallen close to 20%, erasing the stock’s 2014 gains. What sort of problem lurked below the surface that caused the decline? Promotions. Kate said that its Kate Spade Saturday brand, which had been a highflier, took a hit on overstocked merchandise, and helped push gross margins down 3 percentage points from 2013’s second quarter.

There are a couple of reasons money managers often advise Canadian investors to overcome their home-country bias and to put part of their assets abroad. One goal is to get a chance at higher returns by investing in expanding businesses or industries that are absent from our own stock exchanges. Canada’s stock market represents only about 3.4% of the world’s $62-trillion (US) in publicly traded companies. A second goal is to diversify wealth and reduce the vulnerability of one’s portfolio to a collapse in the Canadian market.
