Top Heal Care Stocks To Watch For 2014

Last November, I announced my intention to create a portfolio of 10 companies that investors had effectively thrown away and given up on, in the hope of showing that deep-value investing, and contrarian thinking, can actually be a very successful investing method. I dubbed this the “One Person’s Trash Is Another Person’s Treasure” portfolio and, over a 10-week span, I highlighted companies that I thought fit this bill, and would expect to drastically outperform the benchmark S&P 500 over the coming 12 months. If you’re interested in the reasoning behind why I chose these companies, then I encourage you to review my synopsis of each portfolio selection:

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Rich Smith]

If you want to know what the future holds for global steel giants like Arcelor Mittal (NYSE: MT  ) , U.S. Steel (NYSE: X  ) , and Nucor (NYSE: NUE  ) , one of the best ways you can spend your time, I suspect, is by reviewing the earnings reports of another company entirely — Schnitzer Steel (NASDAQ: SCHN  ) .

  • [By Rich Smith]

So what’s going on with Steel Dynamics? Basically, it’s exactly what I warned you about last month, after reviewing the disturbing news of weak demand for steel in China, revealed by Schnitzer Steel (NASDAQ: SCHN  ) in its earnings report. Steel Dynamics is hitting headwinds all around the globe:

  • [By Rich Smith]

You see, there are two main dynamics at play for companies like Nucor and Steel Dynamics, which rely on supplies of scrap steel to smelt their new steel. Scrap steel specialist Schnitzer Steel (NASDAQ: SCHN  ) is also suffering from weak profits, which is bad news for it, but could be good news for Nucor, which views scrap steel as an input cost. Nucor says that “average scrap and scrap substitute cost per ton used in the second quarter of 2013 was $377 … a decrease of 12% from $427 in the second quarter of 2012.”

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Another problem that ArcelorMittal and other steel companies have faced is the emerging Chinese steel industry. China subsidizes its steelmakers, and with Chinese infrastructure and construction activity being relatively weak, oversupply is spilling over and having an impact on world steel prices. Recycled scrap producer Schnitzer Steel (NASDAQ: SCHN  ) noted last month that market prices for its exports fell by $50 per ton during its most recent quarter, and given Schnitzer’s exposure to Asia, those figures likely reflect China’s contribution to the global weakness.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Teva has dropped 7.7% to $37.85 today at 3:23 p.m. but doesn’t seem to be spreading though the generic drug space. Taro Pharmaceuticals (TARO) ha gained 1.1% to $79, while Actavis (ACT) has gained 1.2% to $156.25 and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (RDY) has advanced 1% to $40.24. Mylan (MYL) has dropped 0.7% to $38.40.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

The company’s generic drug segment should also help push emerging market sales. Abbott markets generic pharmaceuticals outside the U.S. only, and while the division isn’t growth-oriented — sales actually fell around 2% for the quarter — it provides an entry for the company to push into lucrative new markets such as India, where generics make up the large majority of the country’s retail market. The company will face tougher competition in this industry, however: Firms such as India-based Dr. Reddy’s (NYSE: RDY  ) have also pushed hard into emerging markets lately, and Dr. Reddy’s in particular should benefit from its being headquartered in one of the industry’s top locales.

  • [By Benjamin Shepherd] We’re now into day 15 of the US government shutdown, as House Republicans stubbornly try to defund Obamacare. No matter what sort of deal is eventually struck, health care costs aren’t likely to come down any time soon. And that’s good news for generic drug makers.

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (NYSE: RDY) is one of the biggest players in generic drugs, offering more than 200 off-brand medications in the areas of cardiovascular disease, pain management and oncology, among others. In fact, this India-based company has become one of the largest makers of generics in the world, helping to drive more than 20 percent annual compounded earnings growth at the company over the past decade.

Advisors’ Opinion:

It may not be as big as NuVasive, Inc. (NASDAQ:NUVA), and it might not be as sexy as MiMedx Group Inc. (NASDAQ:MDXG). But, Bacterin International Holdings Inc. (NYSEMKT:BONE) offers something to investors that MDXG and NUVA don’t – can’t – right now… a distinct opportunity for a lot of upside in a short amount of time.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Lee Jackson]

BPZ Resources Inc. (NYSE: BPZ) may be a small cap investor’s dream stock to buy. Its first well drilled in the Corvina field since 2010 was spudded in late July and likely will take about 12 weeks. It will take another week or so to achieve a stabilized flow rate before results are reported to the market, which means it will not expect to hear anything until November. The Raymond James price target for the stock is $4.50, the same as the consensus target.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Yet when you think about it, there should be oil there. It’s been found on all sides of Israel. Total  (NYSE: TOT  )  found oil north of the Sinai Peninsula in the 1980s, but the wells subsequently went dry; Isramco  (NASDAQ: ISRL  ) found oil off the coast of Tel Aviv, but never enough to make it profitable; and Noble found a large gas deposit in the Tamar field of the Levant basin. Several Israeli companies have also found oil and gas, but Zion keeps striking out.
