Top Dividend Stocks To Watch For 2014

April is supposed to bring showers, right? In this last full week of the month, shareholders of several health-care stocks certainly got soaked. Here are three of the most horrendous health-care stocks this week.

The bottom dropped out
Shares of Dyax (NASDAQ: DYAX  ) plunged 37% this week. Why did the bottom drop out for this stock? Horrendous first-quarter earnings.

Analysts expected Dyax to report revenue of $16 million for the quarter. It wasn’t even close, unfortunately. The company recorded $12 million in revenue due largely to sluggishness with its primary product, angioedema drug Kalbitor. Dyax reported a net loss of $11.2 million, or $0.11 per share.

CEO Gustav Christensen attributed Kalbitor’s woes to fewer new patients, fewer treatments taken by existing patients, and fewer purchases by distributors. Other than that, it was all sunshine and roses.

Rain clouds
Edwards Lifesciences (NYSE: EW  ) experienced its second-worst single-day drop in a dozen years on Wednesday. Shares fell 23% for the week as a result.

  • [By António Costa]

Himax Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: HIMX) continues to hold its ground. Breakout watch over 11.50 ( click to enlarge )

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

A technology player that’s quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Himax Technologies (HIMX), which designs, develops and markets semiconductors that are critical components of flat panel displays. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 355%.

If you take a look at the chart for Himax Technologies, you’ll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong over the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $8.13 to its recent high of $11.45 a share. During that uptrend, shares of HIMX have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of HIMX within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in HIMX if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $11.45 a share to its 52-week high at $11.49 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 8.63 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then HIMX will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $14 to $15 a share.

Traders can look to buy HIMX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $10.02 a share, or near more support at $9.50 a share. One can also buy HIMX off strength once it starts to take out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Brazilian electricity giant CPFL Energia S.A. (NYSE: CPL  ) sank 20%, and recently yielded 5.9%. Its long-term debt has been rising, largely due to acquisitions, and its free cash flow has been shrinking (and even turning negative recently). But it has been investing heavily in alternative energies, and it serves a massive and growing market in Brazil. The country’s growth has been slower than many would like, but that won’t last forever.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Value Investor]

I will compare Apache based on EV/EBITDA valuation, which is most relevant for Oil and Gas companies. Trailing 12 months EV/EBITDA for Apache, Spectra Energy Corp. (SE) and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (APC) is 3.6, 16.3 and 5.7, respectively. This clearly suggests that Apache is trading at a deep discount to its peers. In addition to the valuation, Apache’s operation in the resources rich Permian and Central basin makes it a strong buy at current valuation.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Big competitors for BCE include Rogers Communications (RCI) and Telus (TU), though it also faces niche players such as Public Mobile, Wind Mobile and Mobilicity. Until recently, there was buzz that Verizon (VZ) might enter the market by buying up the latter two, though VZ apparently scrapped plans for Canadian expansion until 2014.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The big news for Madison Square Garden has been the success of its key sports franchises. The New York Knicks basketball team made the playoffs and earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Even more importantly, the long-delayed National Hockey League season finally got going in January, helping resurrect what many had feared would be a lost season, sending shares of MSG, as well as Canadian venue/team-owners Rogers Communications (NYSE: RCI  ) and BCE (NYSE: BCE  ) , higher. As it turned out, MSG’s New York Rangers made the playoffs and will go up against the Washington Capitals in the first round. Playoffs are an especially lucrative time for sports viewership, and usually translate into extra profits for the company’s broadcast businesses.

Top Dividend Stocks To Watch For 2014: Chimera Investment Corporation (CIM)

Chimera Investment Corporation operates as a real estate investment trust (REIT) in the United States. The company, through its subsidiaries, invests in residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS), residential mortgage loans, commercial mortgage loans, real estate-related securities, and other asset classes. Its targeted asset classes include agency or non-agency RMBS; prime, jumbo prime, and Alt-A mortgage loans; first or second lien loans secured by multifamily properties, mixed residential or other commercial properties, retail properties, office properties, or industrial properties; and asset-based securities (ABS), including commercial mortgage-backed securities, debt and equity tranches of collateralized debt obligations, and consumer and non-consumer ABS. Chimera Inve stment Corporation was founded in 2007 and is based in New York, New York.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Maxfield]

“Nepotism has never been unknown in American banking,” Martin Mayer wrote in The Greatest-Ever Bank Robbery, his 1990 book about the savings-and-loan crisis. While Mayer was referring to American Continental, the notoriously corrupt holding company run into the ground by the infamous Charles Keating in the 1980s, his point rings true today in the case of Annaly Capital Management (NYSE: NLY  ) and its publicly traded portfolio company Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM  ) .

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Because of the requirement to pay out the vast majority of their income, REITs often have extremely high dividend payouts. Mortgage REITs ARMOUR Residential (NYSE: ARR  ) and Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM  ) use leveraged strategies to produce yields well in excess of 10%, while Omega Healthcare (NYSE: OHI  ) and Senior Housing Properties Trust (NYSE: SNH  ) , which specialize in long-term care facilities and other properties catering to older residents, both have yields between 5% and 6%.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Berkshire isn’t the only company where book value plays an important role. In the mortgage REIT realm, the value of the investment portfolio for a given mortgage REIT reduced by the REIT’s outstanding debt, sometimes referred to as net asset value rather than book value, gives valuable information about its relative valuation. Industry leader Annaly Capital (NYSE: NLY  ) currently sports a price-to-book ratio of 0.96 based on its most recently provided figures, reflecting in part investor skepticism about whether the REIT’s agency-issued mortgage-backed securities will hold their value once the Federal Reserve stops making extensive bond purchases as part of its quantitative easing program. By contrast, Annaly’s non-agency-issued counterpart, Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM  ) , sports a price-to-book ratio of nearly 1.1, indicating a significant premium to the REIT’s stated net asset value that could be due to the fact that the Fed hasn’t focused its efforts on the alternative securities that Chimera tends to choose for its portfolio.

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Appaloosa Management reduced its stake in companies such as Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM  ) and Valero Energy (NYSE: VLO  ) . Mortgage REIT Chimera Investment recently yielded 10.9%, but it may become less attractive if Congress cancels favorable tax treatment for REITs. Chimera has taken on more risk than many of its brethren, and has had some trouble filing reports on time. Some still like its prospects, though, while others question its hefty management fees.
