After rallying yesterday, biotech stocks are getting pounded, as Gilead (GILD), Amgen (AMGN) and Celgene (CELG) slide today.

The iShares Nasdaq Biotech ETF (IBB) fell 5.6% to $221.89 today, while the SPDR S&P Biotechnology ETF (XBI) dropped 6.5% to $129.79. Gilead Sciences fell 7.3% to $65.48, Amgen declined 4.9% to $114.11 and Celgene finished down 5% at $139.98.

What’s causing the slide? Nothing fundamental. Sure, the market’s worried about how much Gilead Sciences will be allowed to charge for Solvadi but there’s nothing screaming sell now beyond market sentiment.

Matarin Capital considers the roll of sentiment in the biotech selloff:

While the biotechnology stocks came into March like a lion, they went out like a lamb. They were extremely weak during the last few weeks of the month, when sentiment worsened as Federal Reserve Chairwoman Yellen shifted the criteria for future rate hikes. (High expectation stocks are more prone to suffer with rising interest rates, because of the sensitivity of the valuation of their future cashflows to the level of the discount rate. In this sense they are very similar to zero coupon bonds.) Another hit to biotech investor sentiment came when questions were raised in the U.S. Congress about the pricing of industry leader Gilead’s newest drug at $1,000/pill. The reason for the shift in sentiment may, at the end of the day, be of little matter. Once sentiment shifted, selling brought more selling. As is often the case with momentum stocks, an investor wants to ride the wave of momentum until it comes crashing down, and then head for shore… quickly.

  • [By codyeustice1@google] global banking and financial service company with its headquarters in Athens, Greece. The bank offers financial products, and services, brokerage, insurance, asset management, shipping finance, leasing and factoring markets. It was founded by Swiss banker Jean-Gabriel Eynard and George Starvros in 1841 as a commerical bank. From its inception until the establishment of the Bank of Greece in 1928, it had the right to issue banknotes. The bank listed on the Athens Stock Exchange right after its founding in the 1880s.

    Company History & Operations

National Bank of Greece was formed in 1841 in Athens, making it the oldest bank in the country. It wasn’t government owned from its inception, but had the right of note issue, which it lost in 1928 when Greece established its own central bank. The bank in 1899 aquired the Privileged Bank of Epirus and Thessaly.

At the beginning of the 20th century the bank began its international expansion. In 1956 the bank aquired the Bank of Athens, which was at the time the second largest bank in Greece. The bank in 1965 aquired the Greek Tapeza Epagelmatikis Pristis (Professional Credit Bank). In 1966 bank governor Georgios Mavros founded the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation. Since the 1999 the bank has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In banking it sold all its operations in Canada to the Bank of Nova Scotia in 2005. The next year the bank sold its U.S. arm, Altantic Bank of New York, to New York Community Bancorp for $400 million (EUR 331 million) in cash. It used the proceeds from these sells to finance aquisitions in Southern Europe.

The National Bank of Greece has suffered since the the Greek government debt crisis. It had to write off more then $19 billion in debt. The bank has over 500 branches in Greece, Australia, Egypt and the UK. It has banking subidiaries in Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, South Africa, Turkey, etc.

Many of the MLPs also have a publicly traded general partner. Because the general partner typically owns incentive distribution rights that can skyrocket after the limited partnership distributions are paid, these companies tend to show higher growth rates than the MLPs themselves. For example, Energy Transfer Equity LP (NYSE: ETE), the general partner for Enterprise Products, has a market cap of $24.23 billion on its own. ETE’s yield is 3.4% compared with EPD’s yield of 4.2%, but the general partner’s ability to grow is potentially much higher. The downside is that these stocks are expensive compared with an MLP’s common unit price.

Every year, more than 100,000 white papers on the topic of cancer and cancer treatments are published. Right now, there are over 500 new cancer drugs in development, and those therapies are part of more than 10,000 different clinical trials currently underway. That’s all in addition to the already-approved cancer drugs, and the volumes of information we already know about oncology. What’s it mean? It means the cancer-treating energy often suffers from information overload, which in turn means patients aren’t getting the best care they could get. The solution is a tool built by a little company called CollabRx Inc. (NASDAQ:CLRX). The validation for that solution comes from much bigger companies Quest Diagnostics Inc. What do Quest Diagnostics Inc. (NYSE:DGX) and Affymetrix, Inc. (NASDAQ:AFFX) know that the rest of the healthcare industry doesn’t seem to know yet? In simplest terms, AFFX and DGX seem to have come to grips with the reality that there’s so much information out there in the diagnostic and treatment world that caregivers are actually stumbling over it. The end result is not only care that’s not better than it was in the recent past, but perhaps less effective than it used to be simply because of information overload and/or a lack of understanding of what to do with all sorts of data.

AutoZone (AZO) is firing on all cylinders. It beat earnings forecasts. Its same-store sales were strong. Its gross margins improved. And AutoZone’s stock has dropped nearly 2% today as growing inventories raised concerns among investors.

    Bloomberg

AutoZone reported a profit of $8.46 a share, beating forecasts for $8.44 a share, on sales of $2.34 billion, in line with the Street consensus. Same-store sales, meanwhile, rose 4%, while inventory rose 12%.

Raymond James analysts Dan Wewer and Aziz Pirbhoy believe that AutoZone’s “bullish theme remains intact” but worry about the payoff from increasing inventory:

While AutoZone’s F3Q14 results were of mixed quality, the long-term investment themes underlying our Strong Buy rating remain intact, including a continued gross margin expansion cycle and a shareholder friendly capital allocation policy. AutoZone has now achieved 10%+ EPS growth for a 31st consecutive quarter – a further testament to our bullish long-term view…

AutoZone’s gross inventory investment increased 12.0% in F3Q14 (or 8.2% per foot) – the fourth straight quarter of an 8%+ increase. Unfortunately, inventory yield (amount of gross profit generated from $1 of inventory) declined 1.4% y/y. This could raise concerns of diminishing returns from AutoZone’s latest parts availability initiatives.

Shares of AutoZone have fallen 1.7% to $531.87 at 11:52 a.m., while Advance Auto Part (AAP) has dropped 1.6% to $121.27 and O’Reilly Automotive (ORLY) has declined 0.9% to $147.25. Pep Boys (PBY), however, has bucked the selling–its shares have gained 1.9% to $10.57.

Yes, this could very well go toward Sirius XM’s ambitious stock buyback efforts. The company knows that it has too many shares outstanding, which was true even before the merger between Sirius and XM doubled its shares outstanding and the 2009 Liberty Media (NASDAQ: LMCA  ) bailout included creation of a 40% preferred share stake. Susan Walsh/APComcast CEO Brian Roberts at The Cable Show 2013 convention in Washington. Comcast offered to sell 1.4 million pay TV subscribers to Charter Communications for $7.3 billion as part of a transaction aimed at winning regulatory approval for its proposed $45 billion takeover of Time Warner Cable. Comcast (CMCSA) also said it would divest another 2.5 million subscribers into a new publicly traded company, dubbed SpinCo for now, to be one-third owned by Charter (CHTR) and two-thirds by Comcast shareholders. Analysts said the deal was a pre-emptive move by Comcast ahead of a review of the deal by regulators. “Comcast wanted to do this deal now with Charter so it could get in front of regulators at the Justice Department and the FCC at the same time as the Time Warner Cable deal,” a source familiar with the matter said. The source said there was a standstill agreement with Charter stipulating that it can’t gain full control of SpinCo for four years. Comcast will have no ownership in SpinCo. SpinCo would have an estimated enterprise value of $14.3 billion and an equity value of $5.8 billion, Charter and Comcast said in an investor presentation. The divestments, mostly in the U.S. Midwest, would deliver about $19.5 billion in value to Comcast shareholders, the companies said. “For
