As China enters a new phase of economic development, characterized by slower growth, analysts begin to wonder about the future of companies deeply related to state activities. Common knowledge indicates that as the economy’s growth slows down, activities at the industries associated with that growth will slow too. Nonetheless, that simple take on economics can be deceiving and an analysis of Sinopec (SIN) will uncover considerable growth opportunities. The reasoning is the following. First, the Chinese economy will not stop growing. Second, the slowdown is not a product of model exhaustion, but a mere capacity readjustment. Third, the oil and gas industry will remain a key to continue growing for the Chinese economy. And the priority placed upon the oil and gas is where growth opportunities for the industry lie. Gurus are divided over this position, but their trading activities on Sinopec have not ceased.

Advisors’ Opinion:
- [By John Udovich]
Many American oil and gas investors are probably familiar with the major large and small cap players in the Bakken formation in North Dakota and Montana, but few American investors are probably familiar with the active players further to the north in the oil and gas rich Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta with small cap stocks like Alexander Energy Ltd (CVE: ALX), Renegade Petroleum Ltd (CVE: RPL) and Centor Energy Inc (OTCBB: CNTO) along with large cap Suncor Energy Inc (NYSE: SU) being among those pumping out their share of noteworthy news lately. I should point out that Canada’s oil reserves are ranked #3 after to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia with over 95% of these reserves being the controversial oil sands of Alberta while the neighboring province of Saskatchewan (which the Bakken formation actually stretches into) along with offshore areas of Newfoundland also containing substantial production and reserves. Moreover and excluding the oil sands, Alber ta would have 39% of Canada’s remaining conventional oil reserves, followed by offshore Newfoundland with 28% and Saskatchewan with 27%.

Steven Senne/AP BOSTON — Companies that help Target process payments could face millions of dollars in fines and costs resulting from the unprecedented data breach that struck the retailer during the holiday shopping season. Investigators are still sorting through just how thieves compromised about 40 million payment cards and the information of about 70 million Target (TGT) customers. But people who have reviewed past data breaches believe Target’s partners could face consumer lawsuits and fines that payment networks such as Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) often levy after cybersecurity incidents. Target’s partners “have deep pockets and are intimately involved in certain aspects of how Target gets paid,” said Jamie Pole, a cybersecurity consultant in Asheboro, N.C., who works for government agencies and the financial industry. Fines and settlement costs could reach into the millions of dollars for individual companies, he said, though much will depend on how the ultimate liability for the breach is determined. Boston attorney Cynthia Larose of Mintz Levin said Target would likely seek to add its partners as defendants to lawsuits already filed over the breach. “These class-action lawsuits start to bring everyone in at some point,” she said. After its systems were penetrated by hackers in the mid-2000s, retailer TJX Cos. (TJX) agreed to pay up to $40.9 million to cover fraud costs in a settlement with Visa. Visa also issued penalties of $880,000 against Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB) of Ohio, which processed transactions for TJX. Asked about the business relationships and possible costs, Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation and pending suits. A Visa spokeswoman declined to comment. A MasterCard spokesman said the company couldn’t discuss an ongoing investigation. Like many companies this year, United Rentals (URI) announced an acquisition and saw its shares price pop.
Reuters has the details on United Rentals’ big buy:
United Rentals Inc, the world’s largest equipment rental company, said on Sunday it had agreed to acquire privately held National Pump, the second-largest specialty pump rental company in North America, for $780 million.
The deal marks United Rentals’ foray into the pump rental sector, which is benefiting from increased demand from energy and petrochemical companies tapping into the shale gas boom in the United States. Upstream oil and gas customers account for about half of National Pump’s revenue.
Citigroup’s Timothy Thein and Saree Boroditsky like the deal:
We see the announced acquisition of National Pump, the second largest pump specialty rental company in NA (with ~15% share), and related assets, to be a positive on many fronts. It expands [United Rentals’] presence in to the high margin, high ROA specialty rental market (19% of pro-forma sales), evidenced by National’s high dollar utilization (80%, vs. 47% for URI) and EBITDA margins. With ~65% of National’s sales coming from Oil&Gas and Petrochem markets, the deal gives URI added exposure to two powerful secular trends (US energy independence and manufacturing “renaissance”), which helps support above-avg growth potential for this category ([United Rentals] ests ~9% LT growth). We think the 6.5x EBITDA multiple (7.6x adj. EBITDA excluding cash tax savings) is reasonable given the attractive margins / return profile, and the fact that it provides synergy opportunities and a strong base off which [United Rentals] can grow ([United Rentals] plans to double the size of the pump business within five years). Deal expected to be accretive to FCF and EPS in ‘14 (closing anticipated early 2Q14). Lastly, we would suspect this deal takes [United Rentals] out
