Top Cheapest Stocks For 2015

It might not be obvious to the casual observer, but right now, today, Kroger (NYSE: KR  ) stock offers one of the best values available in the supermarket industry. Why?

Three reasons.

Kroger is cheap
When you stack up Kroger stock against a couple of its smaller, faster-growing rivals — Harris Teeter (NYSE: HTSI  ) and The Fresh Market (NASDAQ: TFM  ) , it’s clear that Kroger is the cheapest of the three. Its 12.0 price-to-earnings ratio is barely half the price Harris Teeter stock-shoppers pay, and less than a third of the price of a share of Fresh Market.

Now as I just mentioned, both Harris Teeter and Fresh Market are growing faster than Kroger. Analysts have Kroger pegged for a bit more than 7% annual earnings growth over the next five years, while Harris is expected to grow a bit less than twice as fast, and Fresh Market a bit less than three times as fast. Emphasis on “a bit less” — as in, the disparities in growth rates aren’t big enough to justify the discounts on Kroger stock: about two times versus Harris, and more than three times versus Fresh Market.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Udovich]

Vitamin Shoppe Inc (NYSE: VSI), Books-A-Million, Inc (NASDAQ: BAMM) and Perfumania Holdings, Inc (NASDAQ: PERF) have the dubious distinction of being the worst performing small cap specialty retail stocks for this year (according to Finviz.com) with losses of 4.85% and 3% and a gain of 0.61%, respectively, since the start of the year (See my previous article: This Year’s Best Performing Small Cap Specialty Retail Stocks? UNTD, TA & HZO). I should mention that the definition of specialty retail stocks might vary from one stock screener to another, but what’s clear is that these three small cap retail stocks have been heading in the wrong direction for investors for much of this year.  With that in mind, what sort of performance should investors expect from these small cap specialty retail stocks on Black Friday and for the all important holiday season? Here is what you need to be aware of:

  • [By Jeremy Bowman]

What: Shares of the Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI  ) were looking under the weather today, falling as much as 10% after a disappointing earnings report.

  • [By Brian Pacampara]

Sales growth this last quarter was up only about 6%, but net income per share was up 21%. They pay a $0.60 dividend which gives them a dividend yield of 1.4%. Their cash flow yield is 4.6%, so they could easily raise their dividend. They are by far the leader in a very fragmented industry. I believe both [Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI  ) ] and GNC will do well and I think they may make a fair pairing in a portfolio. Stability versus growth.

They do have $1.1 billion in debt. But they generate about $200 million in cash flow a year and they have $174 million in cash, so that shouldn’t be a problem. Their cash flow is very high, so in my opinion, is reason enough to believe they will beat the S&P 500 over the next ten years.

CIT Group Inc. (NYSE: CIT) has been consistently striving to expand its market share. In 2012, the company launched Maritime Finance, which offers secured loans to operators of oceangoing and inland cargo vessels, as well as offshore vessels and drilling rigs. CIT Group (CIT) has been stuck in a trading range since the start of July, churning sideways at the same time that the S&P was broadly pushing higher. But with shares testing a key resistance level this week, CIT could be about to make a big directional move again.

The sideways churn in CIT is caused by a rectangle pattern, a consolidation setup that’s formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $51 and horizontal support at $47. The rectangle gets its name because it basically “boxes in” shares of a stock — the break outside of the box is the trade to take. So, if LKQ pushes above $51, then it’s time to buy. Upside looks like the more likely outcome from here; since CIT’s price action leading up to the rectangle in early 2013 was bullish, it’s more likely to break out from the setup to the upside.

Kraft is committing a cardinal sin when it comes to relative strength. With a market that’s correcting in December, relative strength is the single most important technical indicator to use with price — and KRFT’s RS line turned bullish months ago with no signs of strength.

This food stock is lagging the market big time, and not just because of a shape on a chart.

Whenever you’re looking at any technical price pattern, it’s critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Triangles and the other setups we’ve looked at are a good quick way to explain what’s going on in a stock, but they’re not the reason it’s tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That support level at $52 is a price where there had been an excess of demand of shares; in other words, it’s a place where buyers were more eager to step in and buy shares at a lower price than sellers were to sell. That’s what makes a breakdown below $52 so significant — the move would indicate that sellers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess demand above that price level. Wait for that trigge

Getty Images Interest rates in the bond market have risen dramatically this year, which has left borrowers shopping for mortgages or car loans facing higher financing costs. But here’s the paradox: Even though rising rates have made it more costly to borrow, savers haven’t seen much improvement on the interest rates they’re getting on savings account balances and bank certificates of deposit. Rates on Savings Have Barely Budged In the money-market account category, savers have actually seen the rates they get paid fall, despite the run-up in bond-market rates. Average rates have fallen from around 0.50 percent this time last year to 0.40 percent currently, according to Bankrate. Looking at the average isn’t always the best indication of the rates available, as it includes offerings from stingier banks that you’d want to avoid in any event. But even among banks paying the best rates on money-market accounts, it’s hard to find any bank offering more than 1 percent. General Electric’s (GE) GE Capital Bank and CIT’s (CIT) CIT Bank both weigh in at 0.90 percent, while Ally Bank and American Express (AXP) Bank currently pay 0.85 percent. CD Rates: Better But Still Bad On the CD front, savers are faring a little bit better. After having fallen as low as 0.5 percent earlier this year, rates on one-year CDs have bounced back to about 0.7 percent. That’s still below where they were in late 2012, though, and top rates from GE and other banks only fetch about 1.05 percent. Even if you’re willing to lock up your money for a longer period of time — five years — banks are still pretty tight-fisted, with rates averaging 1.35 percent. That’s up only slightly from mid-year lows around 1.15 percent. Although a few outliers will top the 2-percent mark, five years is still a long time to lock in rock-bottom savings rates — especially when five-year CDs paid well over double that rate before the financial crisis. What’s Behind the Skimpy Rates? Savers aren’t benefiting fro

    Cruising All over the World

As the world’s largest global cruise company, Carnival Corporation owns over 100 ships and operates 10 brands worldwide, which attract an anual customer base of 10 million. This extensive portfolio includes among others the Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises and Seabourn in North America; AIDA in Germany, Costa Cruises in Southern Europe, and the P&O Cruises in both Australia and the UK. This firm also owns the tour company Holland America Princess Alaska Tours, which operates in Alaska and the Canadian Yukon. However, it’s the company’s 200,000 passenger ship capacity that has allowed it to reach a diverse group of consumers in a lightly penetrated vacation segment, earning it $15.5 billion in revenue.

The global cruise market is a largely untapped industry, an aspect that Carnival Cruise benefits from greatly. With the 65 and older demographic growing at a 36% rate between 2010 and 2020, while the cruise industry’s capacity grows at 3%, baby boomers looking to retire and spend their money on leisure will surely be swooped-up by this industry giant. In fact, the company’s long-term business model is focused on international expansion, especially in the Asian continent. In 2013, for example, the firm opened its second office and launched a home port in Japan, in addition to other office openings in China (5), South Korea (1), Taiwan (1), Hong Kong (1) and Singapore (1). The larger international presence, combined with an improving economic environment and increasing cost leverage, should help boost operating margin from its current 10.70%.

After a year of ups and downs that have seen Carnival Corp. (CCL) swing from a 52-wek high to a 52-week low and back again, Carnival is looking to break out. And it’s getting a little help from a UBS upgrade today.

    Norwegian Cruise Line/Associated

UBS analysts Robin Farley and Arpine Kocharyan explain why they upgraded Carnival Corp. to Buy from Neutral:

We are upgrading Carnival to Buy from Neutral based on higher conviction in the forward outlook…We had anticipated EPS guidance to fall below consensus, but came in ahead and at high end of guidance at $1.8 above our previous $1.71, which some had viewed as too high. This higher 2014 base of EPS underpins 2015 outlook as the market has been looking past 2014 as a year of recovery. We are willing to pay for 2015 today now that we are seeing very visible signs of recovery, and thus we are removing the ~15% discount we had included in our valuation methodology.

And what’s good for Carnival should also be good for Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL), which also got an upgrade, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), which Farley and Kocharyan label their top pick. They explain:

“Holding price” strategy for Carnival brand is working, as close-in Q4 booking for the brand drove upside in Q4. “Hold price” strategy benefits [Royal Caribbean Cruises] and [Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings] since Carnival, as largest brand in Carib, significantly affects price environment. We are upgrading [Royal Caribbean Cruises] to Buy from Neutral based on unchanged 2015 est of $3.66 discounted back 10% to be our forward 12 mo price target, raising target to $50 from $45, as we have rolled over our valuation basis to 2015 given the improved outlook. [Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings] remains our top pick.

Shares of Carnival Corp. have gained 1.6% to $38.65–just 2.4% away from a new 52-week high–while Royal Caribbean Cruises has risen 1.7% to $46.71 and No

Mecox Lane (MCOX) offers a selection of products apparel, accessories and home and health care products through its online platform and third party e-commerce websites. This stock closed up 13.5% to $4.10 in Tuesday’s trading session.

    Tuesday’s Range: $3.62-$4.18

    52-Week Range: $1.67-$7.88

    Tuesday’s Volume: 274,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 238,211

From a technical perspective, MCOX exploded higher here right above some near-term support at $3.42 and back above its 50-day moving average of $4 with above-average volume. This stock has been trending sideways and consolidating over the last two months, with shares moving between $3.23 on the downside and $4.58 on the upside. This spike on Tuesday is quickly pushing shares of MCOX within range of breaking out above the upper-end of its recent range. That trade will hit if MCOX manages to clear Tuesday’s high of $4.18 and then above more resistance at $4.58 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MCOX as long as it’s trending above its 200-day at $3.24 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 238,211 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then MCOX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $6 to its 52-week high at $7.88.
