The recovery in the housing market is continuing its slow and steady recovery. The most recent data point showed pending home sales rising by 1.5% in March which reverses the February decline. According to the National Association of Realtors the pending home sales index increased to 105.7 in March from the 104.1 it hit last month. This represents a solid 7% year-over-year increase for the index.

Overall, the association’s chief economist, Lawrence Yun, pointed out that “contract activity has been in a narrow range in recent months, not from a pause in demand but because of limited supply.” He sees closings ending up modestly as the year progresses. All of which points to continued modest gains for a housing market that’s been lackluster for the past few years.

Looking ahead, my wife and I are personally going to become statistics. Our home, which went on the market at the end of last month, is now under contract and will be one of what we all hope is an even larger number of pending home sales for April. Like the many Americans putting their homes on the market these days, I’m excited that the market is tight right now as we were able to get a fair price for our home which went under contract surprisingly fast. However, a more robust market is what our economy could really use these days.

Macau’s gambling market has definitely seen less spectacular results this year than last. The major gambling companies there, including Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS  ) , MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM  ) , Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ: WYNN  ) , and Melco Crown (NASDAQ: MPEL  ) , have each felt the sting of lowered gross gambling revenue on the Chinese island during the past two quarters as the VIP segment of gamblers has declined there.

Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS  ) has been the leader in its industry by a wide margin for the last few quarters when it comes to revenue and earnings, both actual and percent growth year over year. In Q2, Las Vegas Sands led the industry. It came in ahead of Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ: WYNN  ) and MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM  ) in earnings, just as it did in Q1 and throughout 2013. While Sands is the only one to have reported Q3 earnings so far, I expect its income growth will beat that of MGM and Wynn.

The group’s annual G2E Global Gaming Expo is being held this week at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas. The study, done by Oxford Economics, took into account everything from wagers by gamblers doubling-down to tourists buying gas, meals or tickets to a show. The numbers didn’t surprise David Schwartz, director of the Gaming Research Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. "I think it’s an important part of telling the whole story," he said. That story, he said, includes not only casino gambling but the industry’s impact as hoteliers, retailers and others. What got the gambling industry to this point isn’t going to keep it thriving, though, said Geoff Freeman, the association’s president. With growing competition, Freeman said the industry needs to seek regulatory changes that can help make the business more efficient and free up companies to be more innovative, he said. The industry has suffered particularly in Atlantic City, where four casinos have closed this year leaving 8,000 people out of work. Oxford Economics looked at regulatory data, federal labor statistics and surveyed casinos for the study. It included spending and revenue in the report that might be linked but not directly connected to a casino. James Murren, CEO and chairman of MGM Resorts International (MGM) , told a G2E conference crowd that 70 percent of his company’s Las Vegas revenue comes from non-gambling sources, including 7 million tickets sold for entertainment performances last year. "Non-gaming has exploded for us," he said. G2E is a trade show and conference where new slot machine designs, wagering technology, and food and beverage concepts often debut. The show has attracted 26,000 attendees in past years.

First up is Pinnacle Entertainment (PNK). CEO Anthony Michaal Sanfilippo bought 23,000 shares of the Las Vegas-based gaming company for $505,800. InsiderScore notes this is his first purchase in nearly two years and writes, “After shares retreated more than 15% from a six-year high and with an activist hedge fund pushing the casino operator to spin off its real estate into a REIT, Sanfilippo stepped up with his first purchase. [He put] a fresh $500,000 into the stock at a price two times his cost basis of previous buys.”

    Time to make the switch
If I could name a sector that I’d certainly tread lightly around considering that consumers are tightening their wallets, it would be the casino sector. Casino companies rely on loose wallets and vacations to drive profits. This is why I feel it could be the time to say goodbye to casino and race track operator Pinnacle Entertainment (NYSE: PNK  ) near its 52-week high.

Although the Chinese government will maintain its gambling restrictions in the mainland over the next decade, Sand Corp’s market share and leverage in fixed costs will continue to riel in strong revenue growth from this region. Fiscal 2013 marked a 24.80% revenue increase ($13.8 billion) and operating margins continue to expand at the same pace. Despite the inherent risk of an economic slowdown in Asia or a recession in the U.S., which could put a halt to leisure spending, the company is well prepared to balance out any short-term losses. The casino operator’s EBITDA growth of 65.30%, for example, is an impressive result when compared to the industry’s average of 4.90%.

Looking forward, earnings per share are expected to continue their fast-paced upward trend, having jumped from $1.56 in 2011 to $2.79 at the end of fiscal 2013. The 21.6% return on equity, as well as 1.80% dividend yield should also be attractive to shareholders and future investors. Although Las Vegas Sand Corp is currently trading at a 24% price premium relative to the industry average of 22.60x trailing earnings, I feel very bullish about this firm’s long term profitability, given its strong market position in Asia.

There’s a lot of uncertainty in the industry right now, especially for those with exposure to Macau, the world’s largest gaming market. Gambling by high rollers has fallen off a cliff in the past six months due in part to a crackdown on corruption within Mainland China, and partly due to a general slowing of Asia’s economic growth. As a result, gaming companies like Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ: WYNN  ) , Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS  ) , and Melco Crown (NASDAQ: MPEL  ) , who get most or all of their revenue from Macau have seen their stocks drop.

When you ask dividend investors to name their top stocks, most will choose high-yielding powerhouse companies that have a long history of delivering cash to their shareholders.
