“No industry stays static over time. Change is inevitable,” said Commissioner John Norris of the Federal Energy Regulatory Energy Commission in a prepared statement delivered during testimony before a Congressional subcommittee on Dec. 5, 2013.
“Having said that,” continued Mr. Norris, “the energy sector and the electric sector in particular experienced only modest, incremental change for much of the last century…That time of incremental change is clearly over.”
According to data compiled by Reuters, US power companies have shut or converted about 16,000 megawatts (MW) of coal-fired power plants since 2009. Another 45,000 MW will be shut or converted over the next couple decades, on the way to as much as 60,000 MW to 100,000 MW of power generation eventually closed down across the US.
The combination of technological advancement, the shale revolution and policy choices at the federal level are making natural gas and renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydro more economic relative to coal-fired power.

As a point of interest we have seen several announcements recently where an announcement of the split drives the stocks up 10% and quickly fades as timing sets in and market risk still exists. recent examples [Hertz (HTZ), FMC Corp (FMC), Agilent (A), Noble (NE), CBS (CBS)]. I would expect the stock to fade hard from these levels
