Following billionaire investor Warren Buffett into stocks he owns has often been a profitable strategy over the past few decades. But reversing the orderbuying a stock before Buffett buys itcan potentially be even more rewarding.
Quiz: How Well Do You Really Know Warren Buffett?
With that in mind, we went prospecting for companies that Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B, $137), Buffetts holding company, has been buying recently, and four stocks that Buffett doesnt hold but we think he ought to buy. We looked for the things he favors: com颅panies that are leaders in their industries, that have a strong commitment to sharing profit with investors, and whose stocks sell for relatively low prices compared with earnings and underlying asset value.
A few caveats: First, even Buffett makes mistakes. Second, many of Berkshires picks are now made by Buffetts two investing deputies, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, not Buffett himself. And third, anyone guessing which stocks might be attractive to Berkshire is doing just thatguessing.
Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks To Own For 2018: BorgWarner Inc.(BWA)

Yesterday, I dubbed the selloff in auto stocks “car-pocalypse now,” as shares of everything car related tumbled following disappointing auto sales. Shares of General Motors (GM) and Ford Motor (F)? Check. Auto-part makers like BorgWarner (BWA)? Check. Used-car sellers like AutoNation (AN) and CarMax (KMX)? Check. Auto-part retailers like O’Reilly Automotive (ORLY) and AutoZone (AZO)? Oh yeah. So is it time to panic?

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks To Own For 2018: American International Group Inc.(AIG)

BMO’s Charles Sebaski explains why he upgraded American International Group (AIG) to Outperform from market Perform:
Agence France-Presse/Getty Images
AIG has been trading at discount to its tangible book given its mid-single digit return profile; however, we expect AIGs valuation to keep increasing with its improving return profile. We are now forecasting AIG to generate a 9.9% operating return on tangible common equity (ROtE) in 2018, which would be a 450 bp improvement from 2016. A double-digit return profile warrants the 1x multiple that we are applying to its tangible book value per share. While we expect AIGs return profile to benefit from lower taxes, we also expect the companys life and retirement business to improve from the rising interest rates as those spread businesses are more interest rate sensitive than the P&C business. That said, we expect continued improvement on both the loss and expense sides of the P&C as contributing factors to the ROtE improve.
BMO also upgraded Arch Capital Group (ACGL), Brown & Brown (BRO), and Travelers (TRV).
Shares of American International Group have declined 0.4% to $65.60 at 3:36 p.m. today, whileArch Capital Group has gained 2% to $87.90,Brown & Brown has advanced 0.5% to $44.65, andTravelers has risen 1.3% to $120.79.

Wednesday was yet another record-setting day for the stock market, as the Dow climbed triple digits and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite followed the venerable average to unprecedented heights. Economic data showing rising inflation made it more likely that the Federal Reserve will look to boost interest rates at its next Federal Open Market Committee meeting next month, and the ripples throughout the bond market sent many investors to consider stocks instead. Yet despite the substantial rally, some stocks missed out on the move higher, and American International Group (NYSE:AIG), Teck Resources (NYSE:TECK), and Movado Group (NYSE:MOV) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

Jazz Pharmaceuticals (JAZZ) is trading up nearly 9% Thursday, thanks to its settlement with Hikma Pharmaceuticals over the firms patent dispute.
As part of the agreement, Hikma will get to sell a generic version of the drug in question, narcolepsy treatment Xyrem, in 2023, for up to five years, while Jazz will get royalties on those sales.
Janney Montgomery Scotts Ken Trbovich upgraded the shares from Neutral to Buy on the news, and also increased his price target from $138 to $175. From his note:
While this comes about three years earlier than previous settlements with other generic filers, it eliminates the risk of an earlier launch. Six months thereafter Hikma may launch its own generic and others may potentially be able to launch as well. Importantly, Jazz will receive a meaningful royalty on sales, retain the right to launch its own AG, and can authorize other AGs after the initial 6-month Hikma period.
Jazz shares are up 8.9% to $153.2o at recent check.

Automakers such as General Motors (NYSE: GM) aren’t enthusiastic supporters either. Aluminum and steel account for roughly 65% of the weight of an average vehicle. Goldman Sachs calculates that tariff-related price increases for these key building blocks could wipe out up to $1 billion from the company’s annual profits.

Shares of California-basedelectric car manufacturer Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)had a strong bullish rally in the past six months, gaining more than 50% in this period and surpassing General Motors (NYSE:GM) and Ford (NYSE:F) as the most valuable car company in the United States. Apart from the general market rally, the close proximity of CEO Elon Musk with Trump administration, the positive news about its Gigafactory, the recent beat on delivery numbers and to an extent developments on the Model3 front have contributed to the bullish rally. However, the rally has also brought back the focus on Tesla stock valuation.
