If only we had that kind of brain power Lucy does, we’ obviously have been able to make sense of this week’s market moves. But alas: The S&P 500 finished the week little change at 1,978.34, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.8% to 16,960.57. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.4% 4,449.56, while the small-company Russell 2000 fell 0.6% to 1,144.34. Stranger still: The market received some fairly solid news–including the fewest jobless since 2006–and couldn’t capitalize on it. Part of the problem was some high-profile earnings disappointments from the likes of Caterpillar (CAT) and Boeing (BA), which would weigh more heavily on the price-weighted Dow. What a mess.
- [By Ben Rooney]
Other notable movers: Caterpillar (CAT) shares fell after the construction equipment maker lowered the mid-point of its 2014 sales outlook, citing weakness in China. 3M (MMM) shares edged higher after the company reported earnings that met analysts’ expectations.

Barclays’ Andy Kaplowitz and team are feeling optimistic about Caterpillar’s (CAT) chances heading into its second-quarter earnings on July 24 despite heightened optimism:
2Q14 Machinery results are likely to reflect what we view as a still mixed but improving macroeconomic environment that we think could support pockets of strength in Machinery end markets. In particular, we think both North American truck and North American energy markets continue to improve while global construction markets look supportive of continued solid/better-than-expected results (mostly from improved margin) in Caterpillar’s Construction segment. Solid truck, energy and construction markets seem supportive of earnings for Caterpillar as well as truck suppliers Cummins (CMI) and Allison Transmission Holdings (ALSN)…
Expectations for an EPS beat have risen, but Caterpillar seems well positioned into 2Q earnings, with solid oil and gas markets and gradually improving construction machinery demand supporting results. Despite 2014 consensus EPS slightly above Caterpillar’s guidance range, we expect Caterpillar to raise its outlook based on a stronger oil and gas market than expected, some improvement in global construction equipment markets, and significant margin leverage as markets begin to recover, although we do expect mining to remain a modest headwind on results.
Shares of Caterpillar have fallen 0.8% to $110.24 at 2:36 p.m. today, while Cummins has dropped 0.7% to $156.60 and Allison Transmission Holdings has declined 0.8% top $31.40.

Companies that stand to benefit direclty from fracking include Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE: APC), Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB) and Halliburton (NYSE: HAL).
- [By Ben Levisohn]
Morgan Stanley’s Ole Slorer and Igor Levi explain why Schlumberger (SLB) could gain more than 70%:
Schlumberger guided earnings to grow at a 17-20% [compound annual growth rate] to $9-10/sh by 2017, ahead of our current estimate of a 15% [compound annual growth rate]. However, the company’s estimates are based on just a 6% industry spending growth level, which is about in line with our long-term expectations of 4-6%.
Schlumberger has historically converted 30% of its EBITDA or 75% of [earnings per share] into free cash flow, meaningfully above that of its peers, while trading at a free cash flow yield of 2-4%. Currently shares are trading at the high-end of the range making valuation compelling. Applying a conservative 3.5% yield to the company’s 2017 EPS estimate of $9-10/sh, its 75% free cash flow conversion and discounting it back 2 years at 10%, we arrive at our new $168 PT. If Schlumberger is able to bring this growth 6-12 months forward and its free cash flow yield approaches its historical 3% average, we arrive at our $200 bull case.
While Schlumberger has a free-cash-flow yield of about 3.5%, Cameron International’s (CAM) and Dril-Quip’s (DRQ) are just over 3% and FMC Technologies‘ (FTI) is just under 3%. Halliburton (HAL) has a free-cash-flow yield of just over 1%.
Shares of Schlumberger have gained 2.1% to $116.19 at 2:06 p.m., while Cameron has doped 0.78% to $66.71, Dril-Quip has fallen 1.1% to $105.62, FMC Technologies has declined 2.2% to $60.20 and Halliburton is up 0.2% at $69.57.

The consumption of oil worldwide isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so the activities of oil companies in these areas must increase as more conventional fields steadily decline. As the oil companies steadily increase their activities in the offshore space, particularly in ultra-deepwater areas, contractors will be forced to construct more rigs. They will thus require equipment produced by National Oilwell Varco and its peers Cameron International (NYSE: CAM ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB ) .

3. Dollar store drama and coffee surge: Shares in Dollar General (DG) are down more than 7% after CEO Rick Dreiling announced that he was retiring in 2015. Activist investor Carl Icahn has a 9.4% stake in Family Dollar (FDO), which many suspect he wants to merge with Dollar General. Family Dollar stock is down 2%. Related company Dollar Tree (DLTR) is slightly negative as well.
- [By Nickey Friedman]
Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR ) continues to impress each quarter with robust sales, same-store sales growth, and diluted earnings-per-share increases. This dollar chain credits in large part a budget-conscious and cash-strapped consumer filling up its stores looking for bargains. Further growth seems like a no-brainer, but there are two things to watch for that could become speed bumps on its road to further riches.

Family Dollar (FDO) became a must-have after Carl Icahn announced a 9.4% stake in the bargain retailer–and so did competitors like Dollar General (DG) and Dollar Tree (DLTR).
