Shares of Boeing have gained 1.9% to $127.89 at 2:07 p.m. today, but are still off 6.3% so far this year. Shares of Airbus (EADSY) have dropped 5.4% this year after rising 1.3% to $18.19 today, while Embraer’s (ERJ) 0.7% rise today puts it up 11% in 2014.

The aerospace industry has received another blow with the crash of an Eurocopter AS350 in Seattle, on March 18. However, the episode had no repercussions on the stock market. As a matter of fact, Eurcopter’s parent company, Airbus Group (EADSY), saw a sudden stock price increment. This counter intuitive phenomenon has many explanations. Most interestingly, it seems to point at a certain weakness on the part of competitors. In other words, competitors are expected to acquire an advantage from each other’s mishaps. This particular incident challenges common knowledge and offers a good excuse to see what and how are Airbus Group’s competitors performing. In this opportunity, I would like to take a look at Textron (TXT).

The company was founded in 1959 and is based in Concord, North Carolina.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Patricio Kehoe]

The motorsports industry is a natural monopoly at the local level, since only one racetrack can hold NASCAR events in each market, and until now, International Speedway has won this battle. Nevertheless, over the past five years, this company has suffered under declining ticket and concession spending, due to a weak demographic fan base located in troubled geographies. Although recent racetrack changes and customer stabilization will leave ISCA well positioned when spending power increases once again, this is bound to happen at a slow pace. However, the distinct properties of each racetrack attract high brand loyalty, and have compelled competitors like Speedway Motorsports Inc. (TRK) to focus business on completely different markets, therefore posing no real threat to ISCA.
