Top 5 International Companies To Own In Right Now

“We remain optimistic as the demand for high-quality steel products has not abated.” So said Steel Dynamics’ (NASDAQ: STLD  ) CEO Mark Millett in making yesterday’s earnings announcement. But the facts beg to differ.

The $1.8 billion in sales that Steel Dynamics recorded in fiscal Q2 2013 were down about 5% from last year’s Q2 sales of $1.9 billion. And with the average selling price for the company’s steel dropping more than 8% per ton in comparison to last year’s Q2, to $781, this hurt profits even worse. For comparison, rival mini-mill operator Nucor (NYSE: NUE  ) reported this morning that its average selling prices for steel were only down 7%. With prices and sales both down on a diluted earnings-per-share basis, Steel Dynamics reported $0.13 profit — down 38% from last year.

So what’s going on with Steel Dynamics? Basically, it’s exactly what I warned you about last month, after reviewing the disturbing news of weak demand for steel in China, revealed by Schnitzer Steel (NASDAQ: SCHN  ) in its earnings report. Steel Dynamics is hitting headwinds all around the globe:

David Tulis/AP It’s beginning to look a lot like … the day after Christmas? On the day before Christmas, retailers turned shoppers’ attention to the day after the holiday. Amazon.com (AMZN) already is offering “after Christmas” deals of up to 70 percent off clothes and 60 percent off some electronics. Old Navy (GPS) is running TV ads that its “after-holiday sale starts early” with discounts of up to 75 percent off. And CVS (CVS) was selling a wine cabinet for $10 off at $39.99 and three fleece throws for $9.99 on Christmas Eve. Heather Nadler, 38, stopped by the CVS in Decatur, Ga., on Tuesday, searching for stuffed animals for her children. But she still plans to hit up sales after Christmas. “I’ll probably start shopping for me at that point,” she said. Stores usually wait until after Christmas to offer discounts of up to 70 percent or more on holiday merchandise that didn’t sell. But Americans who are still worried about the economy have held tightly to their purse strings this year, and store sales have fallen for the past three consecutive weeks. The pre-Christmas deals come as retailers are feeling pressure to attract Americans into stores during the final week of what’s typically the busiest shopping period of the year. The two-month stretch that begins on Nov. 1 is important because retailers can make up to 40 percent of their annual sales during that time. Sales at U.S. stores dropped 3.1 percent to $42.7 billion for the week that ended on Sunday compared with the same week last year, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks data at 40,000 locations. That follows a decline of 2.9 percent and 0.8 percent during the first and second weeks of the month, respectively. Stores had a problem even getting Americans into stores, let alone getting them to spend. The number of shoppers fell 21.2 percent during the week that ended on Sunday, according to ShopperTrak. The potash spat continues to get uglier, as Belarus investigators reportedly intend to seize property and assets of Russia’s Uralkali (URALL.PK) following the collapse of the joint Russian-Belarussian potash venture.

Some of the criteria for inclusion into this index are that units must have a market capitalization of at least $500 million and trade on the New York Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq. Component partnerships will have also maintained or grown distributions quarter-over-quarter for at least one of the trailing two quarters, and they must have a policy intended to consistently maintain or increase distributions over time (i.e., no variable-distribution MLPs).

Because this is an equal-weighted, periodically rebalanced index, top holdings show the MLPs that have outperformed the overall index, while the biggest losers will be found at the bottom of the portfolio. Presently, Crosstex Energy (Nasdaq: XTEX) comprises 6.4 percent of the overall index, reflecting its nearly 30 percent gain in October. Regency Energy Partners (NYSE: RGP) has been the laggard of the group (albeit just barely), falling to 4.84 percent of the overall index makeup.

The total market cap of the ANGI is $190 billion, and the one-, three- and five-year total returns are 29 percent, 52 percent and 249 percent. The index yield is 6 percent.

While the data is by no means conclusive, it is a risk that bears watching. A variety of companies are drilling these disposal wells, with master limited partnerships like Crosstex Energy (NASDAQ: XTEX  ) being one of the many to watch. The company owns an interest in seven disposal wells in Ohio and West Virginia with another well coming on line soon. These wells are designed to simply dispose of the wastewater. Even if the wells prove not to be the cause, the business of owning disposal wells could be tougher to grow because of the perceived risk.
