Top 5 High Dividend Companies To Own In Right Now

2014 is upon us, and that means that investors have started positioning their portfolios for the year ahead. 24/7 Wall St. reviews many analyst calls each day in order to find the hidden gems of stocks to buy and stocks to sell. If one firm can create interest around a stock, it is Goldman Sachs. Investors have followed its Conviction Buy List for years, but 24/7 Wall St. has tracked many major changes to this prized list in the final weeks of 2013.

Investors need to be aware that many “Conviction Buy” upgrades are simply raised from an official Buy rating at the time. Some stocks are actually raised from Neutral to the Conviction Buy List, and this is when investors usually pay close attention.

One other issue to consider is that Goldman Sachs only targets institutional investors and very high net worth individuals. In short, this is what the wealthy and well-to-do are being told to do with their money.

When investors see Goldman Sachs remove a stock from the Conviction Buy list, they often lighten up on the stock, even if the firm still maintains an official Buy rating.

JPMorgan Chase (JPM) got its capital plan approved. So did the Bank of New York Mellon (BK) and Capital One Financial (COF). Citigroup (C), however, was left out in the cold after the Fed rejected its capital plans because of its “deficiencies” in capital planning and despite passing the Fed’s stress test.

In the Financials sector, the Fund has significant investments (13.9% of Fund assets) in companies with a U.S. consumer banking focus (e.g., checking accounts, savings accounts, credit cards, home and personal loans). Capital One (COF), Wells Fargo (WFC), and Bank of America (BAC) are among the Fund’s largest positions within this category. While each company has diversified lines of business and derives its profitability from numerous customers, U.S. consumer banking has emerged as a dominant theme as a result of our bottom-up research process. For each investment opportunity, we consider the balance between company fundamentals (what we are buying) and valuation (what we are paying). The higher the valuation, the stronger the company fundamentals must be for us to invest. Although U.S. consumer banks are trading broadly in-line with their historical discount to the market, we believe that the quality of bank earnings today is superior to the quality of earnings ten years ago. After several years of intense regulatory scrutiny, most banks now have higher capital, better liquidity, fewer competitors, and the ability to improve profitability. In our opinion, banks could enter a period of loan growth, expanding margins, and positive operating leverage, while maintaining charge-offs below historical levels. Lastly, cyclical factors could work in their favor. For example, higher short-term rates and a steeper yield curve could increase the value of banks with low-cost deposits Capital One (the Fund’s largest position at 4.0%) is a consumer finance firm with credit card, auto lending, and banking businesses. The company has a strong franchise, attractive growth opportunities, and a disciplined management team with a solid track record and long-term focus. Capital One has grown market share while achieving high return on equity through its data analytics, which have led to sophisticated marketing and strong underwriting. Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

If the idea sounds too radical to be true, it isn’t. The idea is being employed by several biotechnology developers, including the aforementioned CEL-SCI and Amgen; they each have such immunotherapies in the works. In fact, there’s already one major cancer-fighting immunotherapy on the market…. Provenge, from Dendreon (NASDAQ:DNDN). Although Provenge has been something of a disappointment in terms of sales – possibly due to modest efficacy relative to a huge price tag – and DNDN shares have struggled for a while, the fact that there’s such a drug on the market validates the entire premise; the fact that other key players like Amgen and CEL-SCI are working on their own cancer-immunology drugs is just icing on the cake.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

It may not have blazed a trail into the young, immunology segment of the biotech industry the way Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ:DNDN) did back in 2010 with the debut of Provenge. It may not have the same immunology pipeline (and company size) that ImmunoGen, Inc. (NASDAQ:IMGN) boasts. One thing is pretty certain about cancer-immunotherapy developer CEL-SCI Corporation (NYSEMKT:CVM) right now, however – its stock may be poised to dole out a much bigger foreseeable-future reward than DNDN or IMGN are.

Dendreon Corp. (NASDAQ: DNDN) remains a company in trouble. The post-earnings jump looked promising and investors probably took some comfort when shares popped from $2.88 up to $3.31. Unfortunately, that did not last and the stock is almost back at the $3.00 mark.
