My colleague Andrew Bary has made his thoughts known on the new additions to the Dow Jones Industrial Average–he finds them lacking.
But regardless of the merits, Alcoa (AA), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Bank of America (BAC) are being booted from the index and replaced with Visa (V), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Nike (NKE).
The question now: What does it mean for the new additions? Don’t expect much. Far less money is benchmarked to the Dow than the S&P 500 and most of the impact will be short-lived at best.
But the stocks are clearly feeling the effects today. Of the five Dow losers today, two are stocks that are being removed from the index–Alcoa and Hewlett-Packard. Bank of America, meanwhile, is riding the strong performance of financial stocks, and has gained 1.4%. It’s lagging Goldman Sachs, which has jumped 3.5%. Nike has climbed 1.6% and its nearing its 52-week high.

Call them hunches (because that’s all they are), but now would be a great time to get out of a NanoTech Entertainment, Inc. (OTCMKTS:NTEK) position and/or get into an ACADIA Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:ACAD). NTEK looks like its reached its maximum potential – for the time being – while ACAD looks like it’s ready to start rolling higher again.

During the year we made a number of portfolio changes. In addition to Forest Oil Corp., positions in Carters, Inc., John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Class A shares, and General Communication, Inc., Class A shares were eliminated and Saks, Inc. (SKS) was sold due to the company’s acquisition by Hudson’s Bay Company (TSX:HBC) (the $16 takeover price compared to our cost of approximately $4 .25 per share). One new position, Radian Group, Inc. (RDN), was established. One of the largest private mortgage insurance companies, Radian Group, Inc. should benefit from a recovery in the housing industry and from the Federal Housing Administration’s gradual pull-back from the mortgage insurance market.

The only retail stocks he likes now are high-end emporia like Saks (SKS), which has agreed to a buyout from Hudson’s Bay, and off-price retailer Ross Stores (ROST), whose stock has risen 700% from its lows.

Earlier this week, the New York Post reported that high-end retailer Saks (NYSE: SKS ) had brought in Goldman Sachs to explore a possible sale. The company also reported its first-quarter results, and is looking fairly strong. Comparable sales grew, and earnings per share hit analyst expectations. The combination of quarterly results and sale rumors conspired to push the stock up 11% yesterday, and overnight it rose another 18%. Is this the right time for Saks to sell, and if so, what should investors be on the lookout for?
