I mean, what exactly did Reebok think it was getting when it signed on rapper Rick Ross to promote its sneakers? Didn’t the company listen to the lyrics of his music before handing over millions of dollars to him? And now that one of his songs blew up in its face — promoting date rape doesn’t exactly sit well with many people — the sneaker maker is suddenly distressed by all the negative publicity being showered on it. The company ended up severing its ties with the rapper, saying, “Reebok holds our partners to a high standard, and we expect them to live up to the values of our brand.”

Ah! I guess the fact that Rick Ross uses the stage name of a convicted drug trafficker didn’t make an impression on them, nor did the fact that his lyrics glorify crime and drug use. No, that’s all OK, undoubtedly because Reebok figured it would give the company “street cred” to sell sneakers. But the denigration of women finally crossed the line.

McCormick & Company, Incorporated (McCormick) manufactures, markets and distributes spices, seasoning mixes, condiments and other flavorful products to the food industry, retail outlets, food manufacturers and foodservice businesses. The Company’s sales, distribution and production facilities are located in North America and Europe. In May 2010, 16 of the nation’s biggest food and beverage companies, from Coca-Cola (KO) to Kraft Foods Group (KRFT), pledged to remove 1 trillion calories from the U.S. marketplace by 2012 and 1.5 trillion by 2015, compared with a 2007 baseline. In fact, as of 2012 they sold 6.4 trillion fewer calories, found an analysis by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “Reports like this, and the fact that they exceeded their commitment by fourfold, really shows that you can make progress in giving American families more healthy options,” said Larry Soler, president of the Partnership for a Healthier America, a non-profit chaired by first lady Michelle Obama. The group was formed in 2010 to work with the private sector on anti-obesity strategies. At the time, critics said the Partnership relied too heavily on the good will of the industry and couldn’t replace the role of tighter regulation on how food is manufactured and marketed. Such voluntary efforts by industry “are not a magic bullet,” said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America’s Health, a non-profit policy group. “Particularly with kids, there is a role for regulation” in reducing demand for unhealthy, high-calorie fare. Company Stores

Its Company Stores segment consists of the operating activities of its Company-o wned stores. These stores sell doughnuts and complementary products through the on-premises and wholesale channels. In addition, it offers a number of products through off-premises channels, including honeybuns, fruit pies, mini-crullers, cupcakes and various chocolate enrobed products, generally packaged as individually wrapped snacks or packaged in snack bags. Krispy Kreme has a beverage program, which includes drip coffees, both coffee-based and noncoffee-based frozen drinks, juices, sodas, milks, water and packaged and fountain beverages. In addition, the Company also develops beverages such as espresso, cappuccino and hot chocolate.

Domestic Franchise

The Domestic Franchise segment consists of the Company’s domestic store franchise operations. This segment derives revenue principally from initial development and f ranchise fees related to new stores and from royalties on sa! les by franchise stores. As of February 3, 2013, there were 142 domestic franchise stores in 29 states, consisting of 99 factory and 43 satellite stores.

International Franchise

The International Franchise segment consists of the Company’s international store franchise operations. International franchise stores sell doughnuts and complementary products almost exclusively through the on-premises sales channel using shop formats similar to those used in the United States, and also using a kiosk format. A portion of sales by the franchisees in Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia are made to wholesale customers. As of February 3, 2013, there were 509 international franchise shops in 21 countries, consisting of 120 factory stores and 389 satellite shops.

KK Supply Chain Business Segment

The Company operates an integrated supply chain. The KK Supply Chain segment buys and processes ingredients it uses to produce doughnut mixes and manufactures doughnut-making equipment that all factory stores are required to purchase. The Company manufactures doughnut mixes at its facility in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In addition to traditional doughnut mixes and mixes made from mix concentrate, the Company produces or manages the production of doughnut premix, which is used to produce doughnut mixes in certain international locations. The KK Supply Chain segment also purchases and sells supplies, including icings and fillings, other food ingredients, juices, signage, display cases, uniforms and other items to both Company and franchisee-owned stores.

    And that, unmistakably, is a brand. Although the value of a brand is intangible and cannot be measured in dollars, it is one of the most valuable assets a company can have. This is what differentiates a product from Coca-Cola (KO), Kraft Foods Group (KRFT), Nestle (NSRGY.PK) or McDonald’s (MCD) from just another unknown manufacturer of these very much essential goods and services. In my eyes, brands are as good as a promise to consumers, which differentiates the product from the rest, and promises that the standard of that certain product will be much better than that of another manufacturer. Without this brand that people trust in and are loyal to, there will not be substantial profits and future growth for the company. Do you think Warren Buffett would have bought out Heinz (HNZ) without its world-famous brand name? Definitely not! It would be as good as just another ketchup brand left on the shelf.

General Mills (GIS), the company that makes the cereal, in January announced it would start making its plain Cheerios without GMOs, or genetically modified organisms. The move came after a campaign by the group Green America, which prompted fans to express their support on the Cheerios’ Facebook (FB) page. On Wednesday, CEO Ken Powell said in a phone interview that the company has gotten supportive letters and online comments for its decision. But he said the company was “not really seeing anything there that we can detect” in terms of a sales lift. “It’s what I expected,” Powell said. He added that genetically modified organisms aren’t really a concern for most customers. Americans have been moving away from cereal more broadly, as alternatives such as Greek yogurt or breakfast sandwiches have gained popularity. That has left General Mills and rival Kellogg (K) struggling to boost sales. Cheerios is no exception; Powell conceded that sales have been “down somewhat” for the brand. As for GMOs, there has been little scientific evidence showing that foods grown from engineered ingredients are less safe than their conventional counterparts. But their use has become a growing issue, with some saying they could have longer-term health impacts and that people have the right to know if genetically modified ingredients are used in foods. Cheerios boxes are now labeled as being “Not Made With Genetically Modified Ingredients,” which is not an official certification. The change doesn’t apply to other boxes of Cheerios, such as Honey Nut Cheerios or Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, which still use genetically modified ingredients.

    General Mills, Inc. (GIS) reported higher third quarter earnings on Wednesday, but missed analysts’ estimates for both earnings and revenue.

    GIS Earnings in Brief

    GIS reported Q3 earnings of $410.6 million,  or 64 cents per share, up from $398.4 million, or 60 cents per share, a year ago. Excluding special items, earnings were 62 cents per share, lower than analysts’ estimate of 64 cents per share. Revenue dipped to $4.38 billion from $4.43 billion last year. Analysts expected to see revenue of $4.41 billion. Looking forward, GIS expects to see FY2014 earnings between $2.87 and $2.90 per share, while analysts expect $2.88 per share.

    CEO Commentary

    Chairman and CEO of GIS Ken Powell commented: “This year’s severe winter weather dampened sales performance across the food industry, and third-quarter results for our U.S. Retail and Convenience Stores and Foodservice segments reflect that disruption. International segment results were stronger, with constant-currency sales gains in every region including double-digit growth in both Asia-Pacific and Latin America.”

    GIS Dividend

    GIS declared its last quarterly dividend of 41 cents on March 11. This dividend will be payable on May 1. The stock will go ex-dividend on April 8.

    General Mills shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Wednesday. The stock is up 1.6% YTD.
