The potential cutback in Fed bond buying has caused major pressure on emerging market currencies and MoneyShow’s Jim Jubak explains the implications for investors.
As crises go, the Bernanke Bubble/emerging markets meltdown doesn’t come close to layman or anything like that, but it is a major vent for the markets and it’s still developing, so for the week ahead I’m going to try to tell you what to watch.
Okay, here’s what’s going on. When the fed and other central banks did their big quantitative easing programs, they produced a lot of money by buying treasuries and other bonds to put that into the market. Not all that stayed in the United States. In fact, a lot of it didn’t because people were looking for higher rates, so in 2012, about 1,200,000,000,000 of that, in fact, went into emerging markets. Now the fed has said they’re going to taper off this program. No one knows exactly when. Money is coming back to the United States and leaving the emerging markets. So far in 2013 we’ve had about, just using ETFs, electronically traded funds, as an example, we’ve had about 95,000,000,000 float into US stock ETFs and about 8,400,000,000 flow out of emerging markets, so that gives a sense that the cash flow has reversed. This is a problem because it also means that you’ve got money coming out of countries with big current account deficits. They need the inflow of foreign capital to balance it. Turkey needs about $5,000,000,000 a month, not getting it right now. That puts the pressure on currencies such as the Turkish lira, the Indian rupee, and the Indonesian rupiah. All these currencies are under pressure. They’re sinking like a stone. Some of them are back to where they were in 2009. Some of them are back even further. As those currencies fall, it means that you’ve got a possibility of inflation in those countries because imported goods are more expensive.

What: Shares of Scientific Games (NASDAQ: SGMS ) jumped 10% in late trading today after signing an important customer.
So what: The company announced that it has signed a contract extension to provide lottery gaming and instant ticket services for the Oklahoma Lottery. This was actually disclosed earlier this year, but investors bid up shares leading up to the announcement and nearly five times the three-month average volume of shares traded hands today.

We are likely approaching the last time I will be reporting on WMS Industries (WMS), the former Williams Electronics. It has agreed to be acquired by Scientific Games (SGMS) for $26 per share, plus the assumption of WMS’ modest debt. The deal is scheduled to close by the end of this year. On its own, WMS is having a dismal fiscal year, which ends June 30. For this year, the company, no doubt with distracted management, earnings are likely to end at about $0.90 per share, compared with fiscal 2012’s $1.31 per share. Helping drive earnings lower are additional measures the company is taking to drive up revenues, which remain well below last decade’s peak. WMS’ stock has flat lined the past few months at within three percent of the $26 price. There is virtually no upside, though there is downside if the deal collapses. I see no reason to get invested in WMS.

Call them hunches (because that’s all they are), but now would be a great time to get out of a NanoTech Entertainment, Inc. (OTCMKTS:NTEK) position and/or get into an ACADIA Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:ACAD). NTEK looks like its reached its maximum potential – for the time being – while ACAD looks like it’s ready to start rolling higher again.

Nyxio Technologies Corp (OTCMKTS: NYXO), COREwafer Industries Inc (OTCMKTS: WAFR) and NanoTech Entertainment, Inc (OTCMKTS: NTEK) are three small cap stocks in some very diverse industries. In fact, one of these stocks just bought a 3D ice sculpture business. So will investors see their investment melt with that small cap stock along with the other two? Here is a closer look to help you decide for yourself:

Analysts at Ascendiant Capital initiated coverage of MGM Resorts (NYSE: MGM) with a Buy rating and $33 price target. Shares hit new 52 week highs of $28.74 before reversing gains and closing the day at $28.31, down 0.28 percent.

Sand Corp’s successful resort operations have not only assigned it a narrow moat rating, but also positively positions the firm to receive casino licenses in countries like Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, where gambling will be legalized in the near future. In fact, the company benefits from its market share in the Singapore duopoly, through the Marina Bay Sands resort venue. With 34% gaming taxes, compared to Macao’s 39%, the Singapore operation is the company’s fastest growing business segment, and will continue to drive excessive EBITDA margins of 53.6% until 2018, when the casino license expires. Additionally, the firm’s market share in Asia sets it apart from competitors like MGM Resorts International (MGM) or Monarch Casino & Resort Inc. (MCRI)
Top 5 Casino Stocks To Own Right Now: Penn National Gaming Inc.(PENN)
Penn National Gaming, Inc. and its subsidiaries own and manage gaming and pari-mutuel properties in the United States. It operates approximately 27,000 gaming machines; 500 table games; and 2,000 hotel rooms in 23 facilities in 16 jurisdictions, including Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ontario. The company was formerly known as PNRC Corp. and changed its name to Penn National Gaming, Inc. in 1994. Penn National Gaming, Inc. was founded in 1982 and is based in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania.

Although Penn National Gaming (PENN) completed the spinoff of its real estate assets on Nov. 1, 2013, Gaming and Leisure Properties’ (GLPI) shares have traded since mid-October. The only pure-play Casino REIT was created to provide PENN shareholders with two investments: gaming and real estate. Both businesses would be able to focus on what they do best with shareholders better off as a result. I can’t argue with the rationale.

Valuation and Contracts
One factor that plays in this firm’s favor is NASCAR’s long-term contracts with major TV networks and radio stations. The most recent deal is set to launch in 2015, and will bind the motorsport brand for 10 years to NBC and Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. (FOX), for a total of $8.2 billion (45% annual increase over the current contract). Although a more stable economic scenario may reignite concessionary spending among customers, and cause the motorsport segment to gain popularity again, the non-existent switching costs and alternative leisure choices could be detrimental to this company. Also, ISCA’s current $87.9 million cash flow will likely be stagnated by the new Daytona Ring Project, which is expected to cost $400 million over the next five years.
Furthermore, concerns remain regarding the company’s growth metrics, especially given their downward trend. For the fourth quarter in 2013, revenue showed negative growth of 0.5%, a downfall which ISCA has not been able to stall since 2007. Operating margins have also fallen by 9% in the past two years (currently at 12.8%), in addition to the below average (2.02%) dividend yield of 0.70%. Added to a premium P/E value of 33.00x trailing earnings, compared to the industry average of 22.40x, I feel bearish about this motorsports giant’s near-term profitability and see some uncertainty in the long-term future.

Finally, if you’re smoking and drinking coffee, you may as well belly up to the craps table at Wynn Resorts (WYNN).
It’s not an addiction pure play, because Wynn relies on both its hospitality segment as well as its gaming segment. So in that regard, you can just say you are protecting your addiction play with diversification. WYNN stock is the world-class name here. Things were looking a little ragged for awhile for all the gaming stocks, but Macau has really juiced everyone’s fortunes.

Even if Caesars Entertainment pays down $2 billion of its total debt, it will still have a level of debt 11 times adjusted EBITDA (approximately $1.9 billion in fiscal 2013). Neither Las Vegas Sands (LVS) or Wynn Resorts (WYNN) carry nearly as much debt, and their businesses are much stronger.

Shares of casino operator Wynn Resorts Ltd. (WYNN) increased as revenue trends in the company’s key Macau market were quite positive in the quarter. The company has commenced construction of a large additional casino in Macau, the $4 billon Wynn Palace, which is scheduled to open in 2016. We believe that this casino ev entually will generate a substantial positive return for Wynn. In addition, there is increased speculation that the Japanese government will legalize casino gaming in advance of the 2020 Summer Olympics, and Wynn is seen by many as a strong contender for a possible gaming license.
