BMO’s M. Ian Somaiya and team contend biotech stocks like Gilead Sciences (GILD) Amgen (REGN), Celgene (CELG) and Regeneron (REGN) might be bottoming–but that a bounce back probably won’t happen until the second half of the year. They explain why:
The biotechnology industry has underperformed major market indices as growth for larger cap companies has slowed and scrutiny on drug pricing has increased during a presidential election cycle. The NASDAQ Biotech Index (NBI) is off -26% vs. S&P 500 +4% since Hillary Clintons September 21 tweet on drug pricing. Although the larger cap companies are now approaching a PEG of 1.0, a level which we consider to be the historical valuation floor, we believe Street estimates dont fully reflect more limited pricing elasticity in the U.S. and price erosion in Europe as well as impact of FX on ROW sales suggesting that group may remain volatile heading into the general elections. We believe an increase in the pace of major data releases, which we expect in 2H16, could enable individual stocks to bounce back. We therefore recommend investors go back to basics and focus on companies that have a stable (or growing) base business and whose pipeline can deliver longer term g rowth.
