Top 5 Asian Stocks For 2015

Asian market were mostly lower Thursday after the Federal Reserve left monetary policy unchanged, while China was weighed down by declines in banking stocks.

The Fed met expectations by leaving its stimulus program unchanged at its policy meeting, though it did surprise with its upbeat assessment of the economy. Some investors were looking for the central bank to downgrade its economic outlook after the government shutdown and budget impasse earlier this month.

In fact, the government shutdown was a major focus for global markets in the first half of October. Asian stocks proved resilient through the drama, and most markets in the region look set to post respectable gains for the month.

SGNT stock is also valued at a palatable trailing P/E of 19.8, and has logged six straight quarterly earnings beats, making it one of the best cheap stocks in the pharmaceutical industry.

    Prana Biotechnology (PRAN)

It’s a slippery slope when you start placing bets based on a company with no marketable product, and a lead candidate that’s only in Phase 2 trials. But, Prana Biotechnology (PRAN) may be one of those cheap stocks within the drugmaking world that’s worth the risk.

Considering Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE:LLY) as well as a co-development project between Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) and Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) both failed in semi-recent effort to develop a similar-functioning Alzheimer’s drug, it would be easy to assume that particular route towards an Alzheimer’s might be the wrong path to take. Sometimes though, a small tweak or a seemingly-minor nuance with the underlying problem can make all the difference. Enter Prana Biotechnology Limited (NASDAQ:PRAN). Though the company acknowledges its focal point on the development of an Alzheimer’s therapy is the same broad premise that ultimately led LLY, PFE, and JNJ to failure, PRAN may have found the proverbial missing link.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

For money market fund managers, the debt ceiling drama is just the latest in a long series of challenges. Low rates have forced Federated Investors (NYSE: FII  ) , Schwab (NYSE: SCHW  ) , and many other major money market fund managers to subsidize their funds, accepting reduced management fees just to keep their interest rates from going negative. As the graph below shows, fund levels have fallen sharply in response to those low rates as well, hurting fund managers’ profitability.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Lately, though, T. Rowe Price hasn’t benefited as much from share-price gains. Competitor Invesco (NYSE: IVZ  ) has managed to expand its margins and produce growth among its current lineup of funds, with exposure to a big range of markets that leaves it broadly placed to serve its customers’ needs. But for T. Rowe Price and peer Federated Investors (NYSE: FII  ) , investors haven’t been putting as much money to work in their funds as analysts had expected to see, and that has led to some growth shortfalls. Federated in particular missed its earnings estimates in its most recent quarter, and analysts see growth there slowing to just 3%. T. Rowe Price has better prospects, retaining its double-digit revenue growth, but after a substantial move upward at the beginning of the year, its stock has treaded water.

Last week, ITT Educational Services (ESI) filed an 8-K disclosing that it was being investigated by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to determine whether it broke any rules in how it marketed loans.

    Reuters

The filing, however, hasn’t had much of an impact. Shares of ITT Educational Services have dropped just 3.4% this week but have gained 95% so far in 2013. Corinthian Colleges (COCO), on the other hand, has dropped 27% this year, while DeVry Education (DV) has gained 50% and Apollo Education (APOL) has advanced 30%.

So why don’t investors care about the announcement? First of all, investors have known this was coming. Second, no one believes it will result in a damaging fine. William Blair’s Timo Connor explains:

We view as unlikely a severely punitive settlement against ITT Education from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) related to its continuing investigation of marketing practices on third-party student lending programs, and we believe the risk is a manageable one for ITT. We continue to like the company’s competitive positioning in capacity-constrained, growing educational markets like drafting, electronics, IT, and nursing, and believe the stock will distance itself from legacy student loan issues in the coming years…

Connor‘s optimism also stems from previous penalties assessed by the CFPB: The median fine has been $3.9 million, or just 0.4% of ITT Educational Services market cap, Connor says.

Shares of ITT Educational Services have gained 1.8% to $33.87 today at 1:09 p.m., while Corinthian Colleges has risen 1.7% to $1.79, DeVry Education advanced 0.6% to $35.48 and Apollo Education has ticked down 0.1% to $27.17.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Outside the Dow, stocks generally rose somewhat more strongly. ITT Educational Services (NYSE: ESI  ) soared 30% despite reporting decreasing new-student and total enrollment figures in its quarterly report. Net income dropped by nearly half on a 16% decline in revenue, but expectations were so low for the for-profit education company that those results managed to drive the stock higher. The episode is a good reminder that the beaten-down sector has plenty of room for growth if the worst-case scenarios for the industry don’t play out.

  • [By Jeremy Bowman]

So what: ITT Educational Services (NYSE: ESI  ) reported earnings earlier this morning, shooting up 30%, and earlier this week, Capella Education (NASDAQ: CPLA  ) jumped 15% after reporting, and is now approaching a new 52-week high. The education sector has gotten hammered over the last couple of years, but investors seem to be getting the feeling that enrollment numbers are bottoming. One exception was DeVry (NYSE: DV  ) , which fell sharply after reporting earnings earlier this week, but still managed to gain 5.8% today.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

First up is Cornerstone OnDemand (CSOD), a $2.57 billion software stock that’s been on a tear in 2013. Since the first trading session of the year, CSOD has rallied more than 69%. But the upside could be over thanks to a bearish setup that’s been forming in shares.

CSOD is currently forming a descending triangle pattern, a bearish setup that’s formed by a horizontal support level below shares at $46 and downtrending resistance to the upside. Basically, as CSOD bounces in between those two technical price levels, it’s getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakdown below $46. When that happens, we’ve got a sell signal.

$46 gets some extra strength as a support level because it acted as resistance for shares on the way up back in the summer. The fact that buyers assigned some extra significance to $46 makes it a level that’s worth watching on the way down. The 50-day moving average has been a good proxy for resistance on the way down. If you decide to bet against CSOD from here, that’s where you’ll want to keep a protective stop.

Oxford Industries (NYSE: OXM  ) will release its quarterly report on Tuesday, and investors have stayed optimistic about the apparel company’s prospects, bidding the shares to all-time record highs in the past few months. With expectations for growth in Oxford earnings so high, though, investors need to be careful not to let the company’s stock price get ahead of its fundamental business prospects.

Not investors in Restoration Hardware (RH). Its shares have dropped 2% in after-hours trading after it reported a profit of 49 cents a share, above forecasts for 43 cents, but offered mixed guidance. Oxford Industries (OXM) is off 7.3% at $60 after it announced a profit of $1.01, ahead of 98 cents consensus forecasts, but lowered its 2013 guidance. One potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is men’s apparel products player Oxford Industries (OXM), which is set to release numbers Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Oxford Industries to report revenue of $243.48 million on earnings of 98 cents per share.

If this company can manage to beat or meet Wall Street’s earnings estimates this quarter, then it would mark the biggest quarterly gain in the last six quarter.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Oxford Industries is not able at 5.7%. That means that out of the 14.31 million shares in the tradable float, 817,000 shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 3.8%, or by about 29,000 shares. If the bears are caught being too aggressive into a solid quarter, then shares of OXM could soar higher post-earnings as the bears rush to cover some of their bets.

From a technical perspective, OXM is currently trending above its 200-day moving average and just below its 50-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock recently sold off hard from its August high of $69.29 to its low of $61.10 with higher-than-average volume flows. Shares of OXM have now started to rebound a bit off that low of $61.10 with strong upside volume flows. That move is quickly pushing shares of OXM within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

If you’re bullish on OXM, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above its 50-day moving average at $65.77 a share to more resistance at $65.93 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 103,286 shares. If that breakout triggers, then OXM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $69.28 a share. Any high-volume move above that level will then give OXM a chance t
