Top 10 Tech Stocks To Watch For 2014

Climate change has become such a significant phenomenon that many businesses are starting to implement strategies to deal with it. Some — like Honda — learned the hard way after major losses. But now, even Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT  ) is taking steps to “green” its supply chain. Major corporations are taking measures that may be motivated by the bottom line but that also benefit the environment. With a new technology that companies like BP are championing, even oil wells may have a role to play in carbon capture.

John Vechey of PopCap Games recently joined The Motley Fool for a climate change summit. His first panel guests were Dr. Rachel Cleetus and Dr. Joe Casola. Dr. Cleetus is a climate economist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, where she advocates for effective global warming policies at the state, regional, federal, and international levels. Dr. Casola is program director for science and impacts at the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, or C2ES, which works to assess the current state of knowledge regarding climate change and its impacts, and to promote actions that strengthen climate resilience. Both of them had fascinating things to say about this topic.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Patricio Kehoe]

The concept of diversity, when talking about a company’s activities, is a sword with two edges. When performance hits the fan, diversity can turn into an advantage as only one segment can be affected. However, diversification can curtail winnings during a moment of bonanza. In other words, a company with five segments will see a relative smaller impact in overall performance than a company with activities in a single segment, when that segment experiences an abnormal growth. Hence, with a recovering construction market in the US and declining prices for mined commodities, a comparison between Caterpillar (CAT) and Terex (TER) is all the more relevant.

Engaged Capital, which owns less than 1 percent of the company’s shares, said in a letter to the board Tuesday that the expiration of Jeffries’ term is an opportunity for the board to set a new direction for the company. Engaged Capital, a young activist investment firm led by former Relational Investors managing director Glenn Welling, said a sale of the company to a private equity buyer may represent the best option for shareholders. “However, as we have learned through discussions with industry insiders and private equity firms, Mr. Jeffries’ presence represents a major stumbling block to a transaction,” the activist investment firm said in the letter. Abercrombie’s (ANF) shares, which have lost about 30 percent of their value this year, rose 6.4 percent to $36.20 by midday. Analysts have raised concerns about the company’s ability to revitalize its merchandise, citing management’s focus on cost-cutting, marketing and distribution instead of product and design. “A little fresh blood would definitely benefit the company,” Morningstar (MORN) analyst Bridget Weishaar told Reuters. However, she said the board has been very supportive of Jeffries. “So, I’d be highly doubtful if this letter changes anything.” Engaged Capital said there appeared to be no qualified successor within the company to replace 69-year-old Jeffries, who has been CEO for 16 years. His current contract includes a clause that he would receive over $100 million if the company changes control. Jeffries owned about 1.3 percent of Abercrombie’s shares as of July 30. The company wasn’t immediately available for comment. Engaged Capital said it owned about 400,000 shares of Abercrombie. The company has about 76.4 mil

Few months ago the firm announced a series of actions to increase revenues and improve profitability. With this “new format”, each unit will operate with a high degree of autonomy. This will result in the reduction of labor costs, the emphasizing of accountability in the units as well as better recognition of performance. “While difficult decisions for the Board, we believe the changes we have taken to restructure our parent company as a holding company and to focus on individual business unit performance is in the best interest of our shareholders and will increase shareholder value” said Curtis A. Sampson, the Company’s Board Chair and Interim CEO. Furthermore, strategic investments in the TN unit such as marketing, sales and product development will boost revenues in the future.

Yet there exist viable patent plays that are still undiscovered. Some of these so called "plays," which are not getting enough attention, are actually real companies making and selling real products or services in contrast to pure patent monetization companies. Some known examples are Single Touch Interactive (SITO.OB) and Blue Calypso (BCYP.OB). This article is focused on another one of these patent plays, On Track Innovations Ltd. (OTIV).
