Housing starts fell sharply last month but they remained strong enough to give builders their best year since 2007, the Commerce Department said Friday.
Starts fell 9.8% to a seasonally adjusted annual pace of 999,000 in December following a surge in November to the highest level of the year — 1.1 million. December’s rate was the year’s third highest.
The government estimated 923,400 homes and apartments were started last year. That’s more than 18% above the 2012 figure of 780,600.
In 2007, housing starts totaled nearly 1.4 million.
Applications for building permits, a barometer of future activity, fell 3% in December. Applications for permits to build single-family homes fell 4.8% while applications to build apartments were unchanged.
Friday’s numbers follow Thursday’s report showing U.S. home builders losing a little confidence this month.
Top 10 Shi pping Companies To Invest In 2015: Massive Dynamics Inc (MSSD)

(Kylemore) approximately 90% of the Company. On April 16, 2013, the Company entered into an Asset Purchase Agreement with Real-View 3D (RV3D). RV3D is an image capture product company that has developed and is committed to design, patent, manufacture and market 3D imaging Z-axis capture products for the consumer computer peripherals market.
The Company has developed technology around an imaging technology known as structured light, which allows for the rapid capture and processing of the digital signal capture 3D images of objects or real time 3D video of a desired target. A structured light image is a calibrated grid of lines that is projected on the subject. These projected lines deviate as they fall over the subject. An image of these lines is captured. Real View 3D software can extract Z-axis data from these line deviations and a topographical map is created. To image a complete subject, the subject is rotated 360 degrees for the image and then another 360 degree rotation for capturing the structured light for the Z axis map information. The resulting Z axis map and the image are then fused into a 360 degree renderable image. This image can then be exported into many other formats for viewing. The Company’s primary business will be to develop and market 3D scanning, capture, rendering, and printing products to four markets: consumer, commercial, industrial, and medical.

The problem with that, of course, is that competition is beginning to emerge in machine selling, as small companies with names such as ExOne (NASDAQ: XONE ) and Massive Dynamics (NASDAQOTH: MSSD ) begin to horn in on the printer biz. Competition will probably arise even faster in the selling of printing composites, as Hewlett-Packard discovered to its detriment, when printer ink cartridge “refillers” began stealing away its lucrative ink business.

Before Thursday’s opening bell, regional bank BB&T Corporation (BBT) reported higher first quarter earnings. Despite the increase in earnings, the company was unable to exceed analysts’ expectations.
BBT’s Earnings in Brief
BBT posted first quarter earnings of $501 million, or 69 cents per share, up from $210 million, or 29 cents per share, a year ago. Analysts expected to see earnings of 70 cents per share. Revenue for the quarter was $2.29 billion, down from $2.46 billion last year and below analysts’ estimate of $2.31 billion. The bank reported that its loan portfolio rose 1.7% from the Q1 of last year.
BBT’s chairman and CEO Kelly S. King had the following comments: ”Our results for the first quarter were solid in light of normal seasonality. Insurance revenues were very strong for the quarter, credit results continued to improve and expenses were down $53 million compared with last quarter, reflecting improving expense control. Commercial loan growth was strong, particularly commercial real estate lending for income producing properties. Consistent with industry trends, mortgage banking income declined as originations were down from last year’s record levels.”
BBT paid its last quarterly dividend of 23 cents on March 3. The company reported that it is considering raising its dividend to 24 cents. We expect BBT to declare its next dividend sometime in April.
BB&T Corporation shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Thursday. The stock is up 5.41% YTD.

While it’s not obvious from the chart, you can separate these institutions into three different buckets. The first bucket concerns the most widely discussed too-big-to-fail banks: JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo. Then comes the unofficial too-big-to-fail lenders (those with assets in excess of $50 billion and thus subject to the Federal Reserve’s more stringent stress test process). This group contains U.S. Bank (NYSE: USB ) , PNC Financial (NYSE: PNC ) , and BB&T Bank (NYSE: BBT ) , among others. And the final group encompasses lesser-known banks like First Niagara Financial (NASDAQ: FNFG ) and People’s United Financial (NASDAQ: PBCT ) with between $20 billion and $50 billion in assets.

Many people — myself included — have argued that Keystone XL is already largely irrelevant. As project delays dragged on, oil producers sought other routes to market. And it’s becoming even less relevant to Bakken producers, who had planned on using about 100,000 bpd of Keystone XL’s capacity to alleviate logistical bottlenecks in the Bakken. Late last year Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR) CEO Harold Hamm said in an interview: “They just waited too long. The industry is very innovative, and it finds other ways of doing it and other routes.”

We believe Anadarko Petroleum offers investors a better-than-average portfolio with attractive high-potential deepwater program and solid onshore assets, particularly the dominant position in the Niobrara and an exciting position in the emerging Delaware Basin. When you also consider the track record of solid deep water exploration success, the willingness to monetize assets, the large discovery in Mozambique and the $10-billion interest in GPM it is easy to understand investor enthusiasm. When we contrast Anadarko Petroleum’s delivery in comparison to several of its better positioned peers we find better value elsewhere in the group. We believe Continental Resources (CLR), EOG Resources (EOG) and Noble Energy (NBL) are all likely to grow twice as fast as Anadarko Petroleum – yet there is no appreciable premium in any of those shares. Debt-adjusted cash-flow multiples using 2015 estimates are 7.6x, 6.1x and 7.2x for the peers Continental Resources, EOG Resources, and Noble Energy, respectively, as compared to Anadarko Petroleum’s 7.3x.

So why did MRLN stock get cut nearly in half earlier in the year even though other small-cap stocks didn’t? Good question — the answer still isn’t clear. That may be why shares have finally perked up the last couple of weeks. The recovery may also have something to do with the fact that the forward-looking P/E of 12 for a steady-Eddie grower like Marlin Business is a bargain.

Furthermore, the court’s finding does not undermine the use of the ATS in cases of human rights abuses. It just requires a stronger connection to the United States. That means that other ATS cases currently working their way through the legal system, such as Earth Rights International’s case against Chiquita (NYSE: CQB ) for allegedly funding and arming Colombian terrorists, are still on track. That also means that the link from human rights violations to corporate liability remains.

With the stock down more than 13% since early March, it would be easy to assume Multimedia Games Holding Company (MGAM) was headed for a nasty earnings report at the end of April. The market was wrong, however. MGAM posted a 25% increase in revenue for the quarter, and a 28% improvement in earnings … and that was before the acquisition of PokerTek (PTEK). Bringing PokertTek into the fold will almost assure a fourth straight year of revenue and income growth.
