The S&P 500 has fallen 0.6% to 2,134.92 at 2:16 p.m. today, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average has dropped 107.24 points, or 0.6%, to 18,105.24. The Nasdaq Composite has declined 0.3% to 5,233.14.

Gluskin Sheff’s David Rosenberg notes that the “we are finishing the week with a slightly more bearish tone” and he doesn’t sound all that positive himself:

…the S&P 500 closed yesterday at 2,152 on May 21st, 2015, it closed at 2,130 so the story is sixteen months of practically nothing in terms of price appreciation.

In other words, the slope of the line in this seven-year-plus bull market has flattened; assuming the bull market is intact at all. And whether you are bullish or bearish, here is the reality: we are into a more volatile environment after an unusually long phase of market calm (as in coming off 43 straight sessions with the S&P 500 moving by less than 1% daily in either direction to now enduring seven of the past eight trading days with swings of at least 1%. Summer vacation is over)…

For Investors With More Constructive Outlook On Rates and Economy, We
Believe Bank of America (BAC) Is Better Play The risk of downgradingJPMorgan here is that we continue to see good news on the rate front, but we preferBank of America since we view it as better positioned for higher rates and more room for multiple revaluation (Bank of America currently trades at highest implied cost of equity in our group of 11.8% vsJPMorgan at 10.5%).Bank of America does carry similar regulatory risk as JPMorgan (such as higher GSIB buffers), so for investors looking for a rate play with less regulatory risk we like Citizens Financial Group (CFG). We also view KeyCorp (KEY) as best value in the group with the most room for multiple expansion (currently 11.0% cost of equity).

The other key benefit for Strategic is that it enjoys industry-leading earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) per available room. For 2012, Strategic generated $81 per room of EBITDA. Compare this to top comps LaSalle Hotel (NYSE: LHO) at $74 per room and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE: PEB) at $71. The reason for this is that Strategic is much less reliant than its peers on rooms, with much greater exposure to food and beverages. Strategic earns 53% of its revenue from rooms, while its peers get around 66% of revenues from rooms.

Twitter Inc (NYSE: TWTR) shares dropped 16 percent to $14.99. Twitter reported better-than-expected earnings for its first quarter on Tuesday. However, the company reported weak quarterly revenue and issued a downbeat revenue forecast for the second quarter.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Adding to that angst this morning is bad news on the corporate side. Apparently Twitter (TWTR) is not as popular as the markets thought it was, and in the beloved semiconductor capital equipment sector, Lam Research (LRCX) is giving up on getting U.S. regulatory approval on buying KLA-Tencor (KLAC) so its walking. And thats why SPUs are stuck. They couldnt get through 2,158 (which happens to be their fifty day moving average) and now theyre ten below that. Of course, SPUs also cant seem to get below 2,131 or so. Thats only seventeen down from here. They are stuck.

Bored with the battle between The Donald and Pope Francis? Turn to Twitter (TWTR). Thats where Tesla Motors (TSLA) CEO Elon Muskappeared to take the Koch brothersto task this morning over their possible renewed efforts to attack electric cars.

Musk started with a one-word Tweet, Sigh,” which he linked to a Huffington Postreport regarding a new group with ties to Koch Industries and lobbyist Charles Drevna that will spend about $10 million annually to “boost petroleum-based transportation fuels and attack government subsidies for electric vehicles.”

Musk followed with a second Tweet regarding subsidies given to the fossil fuel industry. There, he linked to an article by The Guardian regarding an IMF report citing $5.3 trillion in global subsidies.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

On a day the stock market slipped, shares of Gap (GPS) were on fire following the release of its September same-store sales.

    Getty Images

Shares of Gap leaped 15% to $26.25 today, even as the S&P 500 dropped 0.3% to 2,153.74 following today’s U.S. payrolls data.

On the surface Gap’s same-store sales didn’t look like anything to write home about–they dropped 3%. MKM’s Roxanne Meyer explains why they were greeted with such enthusiasm:

Roughly in-line September comps, with a beat at Old Navy and a miss at Gap, but comp metrics encouraging. September comps of -3% were slightly ahead of our -4% and the Street’s -3.5%, as a beat at Old Navy (+4% vs. MKM 1%, Street 0.5%) was offset by a miss at Gap (-10% vs. MKM -8%, Street -5.7%). Banana Republics -9% was in-line with MKM/Street estimates…

Adjusting for the DC fire would have resulted in a bigger beat at Old Navy and an in-line result at Gap. The fire at the Fishkill DC was said to impact comps by 3 points overall, including a 5 point impact at Gap, 3 point impact at Banana Republic and 2 point impact at Old Navy; both fashion and basics were impacted. We note that even with the impact of the fire, comp trends improved across divisions; absent the fire, core Gap, while still at a disappointing -5% comp, would have seen an 8 and 9 point improvement on a 2 and 3 stack vs. August, respectively. The DC fire is also expected to haircut 4Q comps, although likely by less, particularly as seasonal fashion won’t be impacted (just basics).

Inflection at Old Navy is driving the better than expected gross margin; if sustainable, it could provide the path to upside. We are encouraged that Old Navy saw sequentially improved comp momentum, even including the impact of the fire, due to strong product acceptance, particularly in womens where the balance between fashion and basics is now said to be corrected. This is driving a higher AUR as
