Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Robert Weinstein]

Lawsuit after lawsuit, a billion dollars in cost overruns, taxpayer subsidies and the most expensive coal plant to operate causing electric rates to skyrocket, if this becomes the norm. The new project is called Plant Ratcliffe by Southern Co. Plant Ratcliffe is quite the boondoggle, but proponents say it always costs more to build the first one and costs will come down as the technology improves. More plants are in the planning stages and may bring a needed shot in the arm to mining stocks. Alpha Natural Resources (ANR), Walter Energy (WLT), Arch Coal (ACI), Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF), Peabody Energy (BTU), and James River Coal (JRCC) are companies that may benefit from increased demand for coal. Not all coal or coal companies are equal, so it’s crucial to discriminate based on your investment time-horizon goals. With that said, the announcement should have been followed by a deep sell-off in coal and utility related stocks. But something happened. Or, rather, didn’t happen. The above coal stocks didn’t sell off tremendously and are largely moving along with the rest of the market today. This is noteworthy because stocks don’t bottom on good news, they reach a bottom on awful news. Let me explain: When a stock chart continues trending lower, what you’re witnessing is investors throwing in the towel and moving on. Leaving aside bankruptcies for a moment, almost all stocks have a core group of investors that are commonly known as the “strong hands.” A stock is at the bottom when the weak hands are gone. At some point, distressing news (like an unfavorable EPA announcement regarding coal) hits the wire and the related stock or stocks react with little or no movement. This is what we are witnessing right now in coal-related companies.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Stifel’s Mark Astrachan and Claire Chamberlin argue that Starbucks’ (SBUX) valuation is to high for a Buy rating despite “a long runway for growth” They explain:

We do so believing consensus forward estimates are sound but that valuation, inline with a group of 15 global consumer brands, implies limited opportunity for multiple expansion. Starbucks is the preeminent global coffee brand with a long runway for growth driven by premiumization of coffee consumption and continued expansion of retail stores, both in the U.S. and abroad, and most particularly, in our view, the companys underpenetrated consumer packaged goods (CPG) business for coffee, tea, and ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages.

Overall, we estimate Starbucks sales and EPS will grow at a 9% and 16% CAGR, respectively, between 2015 and 2018. We estimate fair value in the mid $60s, a mid-teens multiple on forward EBITDA, and would become more constructive on Starbucks shares on weakness from current levels, all else being equal. We believe a premium valuation is warranted given our expectation for continued solid sales and EPS growth driven by sustainable share gains of a favorably growing global coffee category, CPG optionality, and consistent free cash flow.

How do Astrachan and Chamberlin determine Starbucks’ valuation is fair? Not by comparing it to other restaurants, but by comparing it to 15 other consumer stocks with global brands, including Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG), Colgate-Palmolive (CL), and Nike (NKE). Here’s the list of 15 companies:

At 30.3 times earnings, Starbucks is in line with the average of that group, which stands at 31.1 times, and thus worthy of a Hold rating, Astrachan and Chamberlin say.

Shares of Starbucks have gained 0.8% to $60.02 at 3:26 p.m. today, while Chipotle Mexican Grill has fallen 2.8% to $458.63, Colgate-Palmolive has risen 0.8% to $70.43, and Nike has dipped 0.2% to $63.05.

In at least one Texas bank and one Ohio credit union, 3D video banking is currently undergoing testing, according to TheFinancialBrand.com, a website for bank and credit union marketing executives. Three-dimensional video banking is similar to a consumer video conference with a bank representative –- only in this case, the executive looks like a living, breathing person sitting across from you. Thanks to theater surround sound, the representative also sounds as if they’re in the same room. And since the consumer is interacting with a real person and not an automated hologram, the experience apparently isn’t much different than the real thing. Banking and managing money isn’t what it used to be. The 1970s and 1980s brought us the rise of the ATM. Consumers became acquainted with online banking during the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. The 2010s are shaping up as the era of mobile banking. That was underscored Sept. 10-11 in New York City when Mitek Systems Inc. (MITK), a San Diego-based technology company, debuted its Mobile Photo Account Opening product at Finovate, a trade show where banking tech products are often unveiled. The product allows consumers to open a bank account within 60 seconds. If you have your bank’s app, you can use your smartphone’s camera to take a photo of the front and back of your driver’s license, and presto, your new checking, savings or credit card account is open.
