Top 10 Prefered Companies To Invest In Right Now

Although we don’t believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes — just in case they’re material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of business software specialist Qlik Technologies (NASDAQ: QLIK  ) climbed 13% today after its quarterly results and outlook easily topped Wall Street expectations.

So what: The company’s first-quarter loss widened to $13.2 million, but a clear beat on the top line — revenue jumped 22% to $96.5 million vs. the consensus of $91.3 million — coupled with upbeat guidance for the full year reinforces optimism about its growth going forward. While IT spending as a whole remains weak, Qlik continues to benefit from companies looking to boost efficiency through data mining and analysis, giving growth-oriented investors somewhat of a safe haven in the tech sector.

Now what: Management now sees full-year 2013 EPS of $0.41-$0.44 on revenue of $471 million-$481 million, up nicely from its prior view of $0.39-$0.42 and $465 million-$475 million. “We continue to benefit from sales process improvements across the enterprise, expanded service and support offerings, and ongoing momentum across our partner network,” CEO Lars Bjork said. With the stock flirting with its 52-week high once again and sporting a rather lofty forward P/E, however, I’d wait for some of the excitement to fade before buying into that bullishness.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Joshua Bondy]

Cameco (NYSE: CCJ  ) is the world’s preeminent pure-play uranium miner. It has a host of high-quality mines and a small total debt-to-equity ratio of 0.25. Its margins are low as the industry is still recovering from Fukushima, but this has allowed Cameco to buy up assets from potentially dangerous competitors. The good news is that its gross margin of 35.2% lets it sit back and watch the market recover.

  • [By Reuben Brewer]

Cameco (NYSE: CCJ  ) has a lot invested in the future growth of nuclear power. And it expects good things, particularly in Asia. However, nuclear power has older plants (built decades ago) that need to be cleaned up. That’s where companies like Fluor (NYSE: FLR  ) can make a buck.

  • [By Reuben Brewer]

Relatively weak demand for thermal coal in China has pushed coal prices lower in Australia. That’s a problem for big miners like Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO  ) , BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP  ) , and Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) . However it could add to the allure of uranium miner Cameco (NYSE: CCJ  ) .

Al Behrman/APCanned soups are among the many processed foods regulators say contain too much salt. WASHINGTON — Food companies and restaurants could soon face government pressure to make their foods less salty — a long-awaited federal effort to try to prevent thousands of deaths each year from heart disease and stroke. The Food and Drug Administration is preparing voluntary guidelines asking the food industry to lower sodium levels, FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg told The Associated Press. Hamburg said in a recent interview that the sodium is “of huge interest and concern” to the agency. “We believe we can make a big impact working with the industry to bring sodium levels down, because the current level of consumption really is higher than it should be for health,” Hamburg said. It’s still unclear when FDA will release the guidelines, despite its 2013 goal to have them completed this year. Hamburg said she hoped the agency would be able to publicly discuss the issue “relatively soon.” On Tuesday, FDA spokeswoman Erica Jefferson said there is no set timeline for their release. The food industry has already made some reductions, and has prepared for government action since a 2010 Institute of Medicine report said companies hadn’t made enough progress on making foods less salty. The IOM advised the government to establish maximum sodium levels for different foods, though the FDA said then — and maintains now — that it favors a voluntary route. Americans eat about 1½ teaspoons of salt daily, about a third more than the government recommends for good health and enough to increase the risk of high blood pressure, strokes and other problems. Most of that sodium is hidden inside common processed foods and restaurant meals. In addition to flavor, companies use sodium to increase shelf life, prevent the growth of bacteria, or improve texture and appearance. That makes it more difficult to remove from some products, Hamburg noted. Once the guide

Margins matter. The more H&E Equipment Services (Nasdaq: HEES  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That’s why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I’m looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong H&E Equipment Services’s competitive position could be.
