Top 10 Performing Stocks To Own For 2014

On this day in economic and business history…

The first public gas utility company in the Western Hemisphere — and one of the earliest known public utilities anywhere — was born in a museum on Baltimore’s Holliday Street on June 11, 1816. Museum proprietor Rembrandt Peale awed his patrons that day with a “ring beset with gems of light” fueled by coal gas, and the event planted the notion of lighting the streets of Baltimore in his mind. A week later, Peale obtained government approval for his plan to lay gas pipelines under the streets to light public lamps, and the Gas Light Company of Baltimore was born.

“A History of the Consolidated Gas Electric Light and Power Company of Baltimore,” written in 1928 by Delbert B. Lowe, recounts the origins of this groundbreaking utility and the pre-natural-gas fuel it used:

The gas manufactured by this first company … was made by burning coal in cast-iron retorts, the gas being driven off and conducted away from the retort by a pipe. It was then cooled and stored in gas holders. This gas was used exclusively for over 50 years, or until the introduction of water gas. …

ENGlobal (ENG) provides engineering and professional services principally to the energy sector in the U.S. and internationally. This stock closed up 9% to $1.60 in Thursday’s trading session.

    Thursday’s Range: $1.48-$1.63

    52-Week Range: $0.30-$1.88

    Thursday’s Volume: 245,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 59,090

From a technical perspective, ENG spiked sharply higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $1.50 with above-average volume. This move pushed shares of ENG into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $1.59. Shares of ENG are now starting to move within range of triggering another near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ENG manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.66 to $1.71 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ENG as long as it’s trending above Thursday’s low of $1.48 or above more support at $1.40 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 59,090 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ENG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $1.88. Any high-volume move above that level will then give ENG a chance to tag $2 to $2.20.

The average investor had never heard of him or his hedge fund; however anyone who tracked money managers closely, was well aware the outstanding returns which were flowing into the pockets of the clients at Tontine. In 2003 and 2004, Gendell recorded near miraculous gains, approximately doubling the value of his portfolios, in back to back years.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Sean Williams]

    This week’s loser
On the other side of the coin was networking equipment maker QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC  ) , which tanked 4.8% on the week after disclosing that its CEO, Simon Biddiscombe, had resigned on Friday. In the interim, QLogic’s CFO, Jean Hu, will be the acting CEO. Anytime the management of a company changes, it provides a level of uncertainty that’s bound to unnerve investors. I’d urge current shareholders (of which I’m one) to remember that QLogic has been consistently profitable for years, has $5 in net cash per share, and is poised to benefit from higher infrastructure spending. Patience will pay off here!

  • [By Eric Volkman]

QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC  ) is soon to become a slimmer company. The firm announced that it will implement a restructuring plan this year, in a move to “streamline business operations with the goal of driving long-term profitable growth.” The effort will include a reduction in employee numbers. QLogic did not say how many jobs might be affected.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    This week’s winner
It certainly wasn’t a great week for the broad-based S&P 500, which dipped 2.4% over the past five trading sessions. That didn’t seem to matter much to network equipment manufacturer QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC  ) , which added on 3.7% this week following a restructuring plan announcement on Tuesday. The company’s plan involves job cuts and streamlining its operations in order to save $20 million annually. Although it’ll incur some negative impact on its GAAP earnings in the interim, I highly doubt this changes the long-term outlook or consistent profitability that drew me to own QLogic in the first place.

Finally, I always like to see one of the most important financial ratios applying to stockholders, the best measure of performance for a firm’s management: the return on equity. The ratio has decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. Currently, a ROE of 45.9% is higher than all the 1,805 companies in the Diversified Industrials industry. Competitors such General Cable Corp. (BGC) has a very low ROE of 0.3% which is clearly not attractive. An alternative could be Belden Inc (BDC) with a positive ROE of 24%.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 health care player that looks poised for a potentially large move higher is Stereotaxis (STXS), which designs, manufactures and markets an advanced cardiology instrument control system for use in a hospital’s interventional surgical suite to enhance the treatment of arrhythmias and coronary artery disease. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up big by 43%.

If you take a look at the chart for Stereotaxis, you’ll notice that this stock has formed a major bottom pattern over the last three months, since this stock has found buying interest each time it has pulled back towards $3.50 and $3.10 a share. Buyers have stepped in at those levels and have not let the sellers pressure STXS lower. Shares of STXS are now starting to spike higher today right off its 50-day moving average of $3.59 a share. That spike is quickly pushing shares of STXS within range of triggering a big breakout trade above a key downtrend line.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in STXS if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $4 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.98 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then STXS will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $5 to $6.24 a share. Any high-volume move above $6.24 a share will then give STXS a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from August that started at $10 a share.

Traders can look to buy STXS off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below those key support levels at $3.50 to $3.10 a share. One can also buy STXS off strength once it clears $4 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Look out Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG), and step aside BioTelemetry Inc. (NASDAQ:BEAT). There’s a new cardiac name in town, and its name is Stereotaxis Inc. (NASDAQ:STXS). This small company’s stock is soaring today on the heels of encouraging news, though the prompt for the stock’s strength has been brewing for quite some time. This nudge for STXS, however, may well mean it has a lot more potential than ISRG or BEAT do for the foreseeable future.
