Even more changes coming for the pharma giant
Because of the slow uptake of newer respiratory drugs Anoro and Breo, and a nearly half-billion-dollar fine in China during the quarter due to its bribery scandal, Glaxo is exploring cost-saving measures through a workforce reduction. Keeping with this theme, the company said that the swap of its oncology unit for Novartis’  (NYSE: NVS  )  vaccine unit should also help to save the company about $1.6 billion within three years, presumably due to lower R&D expenses.

    More to come?
This isn’t the first collaboration Bristol-Myers has set up for Opdivo. Just last week, Bristol-Myers inked a deal with Novartis (NYSE: NVS  ) to test Opdivo with three of Novartis’ drugs — Zykadia, INC280, and EGF816 — in lung cancer patients. Novartis is actually working on developing its own PD-1 drug after buying CoStim Pharmaceuticals earlier this year, but it’s far enough back in the clinic that it only makes sense to partner for now.

The first thing to realize about StoneMor is that arcane and flexible accounting rules make it important to dig beneath its GAAP earnings. Growth throughout the industry has been substantial, as up-and-coming Carriage Services (NYSE: CSV  ) continued to stay on pace for double-digit sales growth as it rapidly expands its reach. Even well-established player Matthews International (NASDAQ: MATW  ) managed to grow revenue by nearly 14% in the quarter that ended in March, although its earnings fell slightly from the year-ago quarter. Still, StoneMor’s sales haven’t been able to rise as quickly as its peers, with its previous report including just a 6% gain in revenue.

The company has a current ROE of 19.09%, which is higher than the industry median and the ones exhibited by CGI Group (GIB) and Amdocs (DOX). In general, analysts consider ROE ratios in the 15-20% range as representing attractive levels for investment. So for investors looking those levels or more, Teradata (TDC) could be the option. For more attractive ROE, Gartner (IT) and Igate (IGTE) have extremely good ratios. It is very important to understand this metric before investing and it is important to look at the trend in ROE over time.

Vitamin Shoppe Inc (NYSE: VSI), Books-A-Million, Inc (NASDAQ: BAMM) and Perfumania Holdings, Inc (NASDAQ: PERF) have the dubious distinction of being the worst performing small cap specialty retail stocks for this year (according to Finviz.com) with losses of 4.85% and 3% and a gain of 0.61%, respectively, since the start of the year (See my previous article: This Year’s Best Performing Small Cap Specialty Retail Stocks? UNTD, TA & HZO). I should mention that the definition of specialty retail stocks might vary from one stock screener to another, but what’s clear is that these three small cap retail stocks have been heading in the wrong direction for investors for much of this year.  With that in mind, what sort of performance should investors expect from these small cap specialty retail stocks on Black Friday and for the all important holiday season?
