RENO, Nev. (AP) — Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) said it will pay for construction of an 18-megawatt photovoltaic solar plant in northern Nevada to provide power for a data center the technology giant plans east of Reno.

The Fort Churchill Solar Array, to be built in Yerington, was included in a filing Monday by NV Energy (NYSE: NVE  ) with the Public Utilities Commission.

Apple announced plans last year to build the data center. The solar generating plant would be located in Lyon County, south of that facility. The solar plant proposal must be approved by state regulators, a process that could take several months.

In a statement, Apple said the solar project would provide renewable energy for the data center and add clean energy to the power grid.

“All of Apple’s data centers use 100 percent renewable energy and we are on track to meet that goal in our new Reno data center using the latest in high-efficiency concentrating solar panels,” the company said.

There are four criteria used to determine how profitable a company is. Of these four criteria, Facebook satisfies three, making it appear to be a very profitable company. Those criteria are as follows:

Return on Assets (ROA): This figure is essentially the company’s net income. In order to meet this criterion in Piotroski’s method, the ROA must be a positive number. With an ROA of 0.40, Facebook meets this requirement and receives a 1.
Cash Flow from Operations (CFO): This tells investors how much the company is earning from its regular business activities (production, sales, etc). It must be a positive number in order to receive a score of 1. Facebook’s cash flow from operations was $1,612 meaning it definitely satisfies this requirement and receives a 1.
Change in ROA: In order for the profitability of a company to be considered sustainable, it must show a steadily increasing return on its assets. To calculate this, we take Facebook’s current ROA of 0.40 and subtract the previous year’s ROA (15.80). This gives us a difference of -15.40, showing a decrease. Therefore, Facebook does not meet this requirement and receives a 0.
Accrual: This criterion simply checks to make sure that the company’s cash flow from operations is higher than its return on assets. As we can see above, Facebook’s CFO of $1,612 is definitely greater than its ROA of 0.40 meaning that it receives a score of 1.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James Brumley]

The dominant name is solar power stock is SunPower Corporation (SPWR), and rightfully so. Its panels are the most efficient in the industry, and everybody wants their product.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

But what does this resurrection mean for investors? With a couple of exceptions, solar stocks hit a peak in 2008. First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) topped $300 a share briefly, SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR) topped $125 a share, JA Solar hit $120, Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) topped $40 and Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) reached its peak of more than $35 in mid-2007. At today’s prices one almost has to wonder if we are talking about the same companies. The only stock trading anywhere near its peak price of six years ago is Canadian Solar. JinkoSolar is near its all-time high again, but it was not publicly traded until mid-2010.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Transocean are unchanged at $40.47 today, while Ensco (ESV) has risen 0.7% to $52.43, Atwood Oceanics (ATW) is little changed at $49.47, Diamond Offshore (DO) has risen 0.4% to $47.02 and  Seadrill (SDRL), whose strategy Transocean may be following, has ticked up 0.2% to $34.30.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

See, the offshore drillers have been reporting earnings results, and really, they haven’t been that bad. Diamond Offshore beat by 15 cents yesterday, Atwood Oceanics (ATW) beat by 12 cents this week, and in January Noble (NE) reported results in line with analyst forecasts.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Diamond Offshore had dropped 18% this year through yesterday’s close, while Transocean (RIG) had fallen 15%, Noble (NE) had declined 17%, Seadrill (SDRL) had dropped 12% and Atwood Oceanics (ATW), which reported earnings yesterday, had fallen 13%. But all the bearishness has been forgotten, what with the S&P 500 up more than 1% and Diamond Offshore trouncing analyst forecasts.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

There’s been a lot of bearish talk about offshore drillers recently–and Atwood Oceanics (ATW) earnings results aren’t likely to dispel those concerns, despite an earnings beat.

A weekend of good news for Tesla Motors (TSLA) and Elon Musk has been greeted with a lower stock price today.

    Richard Levine/Demotix/Corbis

Shares of Tesla have dropped 1.6% to 208.97 at 11:56 a.m. today despite a loving profile of CEO Elon Musk on 60 Minutes and news that Tesla would be able to keep its New York stores open.

CNBC has the details on Tesla’s New York deal:

In a potentially big win for Tesla Motors, the carmaker on Friday struck a deal New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the New York State Automobile Dealers Association and the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association to keep existing retail locations open in the state.

The deal is similar to one struck in Ohio, which essentially allows existing retail locations to remain open but limits or restricts additional stores.

New Jersey and Texas have both banned direct auto sales to protect existing auto dealers in their states.

That good news and Musk’s 60-minutes face-time–where Musk got to answer questions like “What is it about you that seems to invite skepticism?”–hasn’t been greeted with a higher stock price for Tesla today, however, after Barron’s Bill Alpert panned Tesla’s gigafactory. SolarCity (SCTY), though, has gained 1.8% to $62.58.

You just can’t win ‘em all.

  • [By Vinay Singh]

Electric vehicles have been around for a very long time, but they were not popular because of various shortcomings like limited range and low speed. Tesla Motors (TSLA) was the first company to change all that, and as a result, it gained a lot of media attention and saw a massive jump in its share price in 2013.

The current economic and political environment makes it hard to see what possible catalyst could pull EBR stock out of negative territory any time soon. Mattel (MAT), the world’s largest toymaker, agreed to buy Mega Brands (MB) for $460 million, acquiring the biggest challenger to Lego A/S in the construction-toy market. Mattel is offering C$17.75 ($16) a share, according to a statement today, a 36 percent premium over yesterday’s closing price. The board of Montreal-based Mega Brands unanimously approved the transaction, and investors holding 39 percent of the stock, including Chief Executive Officer Marc Bertrand and Fairfax Financial Holdings (FFH), agreed to the deal. The purchase of Mega Brands, the world’s second-largest maker of snap-together blocks, will fill a product hole for Mattel. It doesn’t have its own construction line, locking it out of a $4 billion market in the U.S. and Europe. The category also is a bright spot in a toy industry that has seen growth stall in the U.S. Mattel considered starting its own construction line, then opted instead to buy Mega Brands because it would be faster and less risky, Mattel CEO Bryan G. Stockton said on a call with reporters. Mattel got its first taste of construction in 2012 when it debuted blocks for its Barbie brand through a licensing deal with Mega Brands. Mattel realized that replicating this kind of expertise would take years, Stockton said. ‘About Growth’ “This acquisition is all about growth,” Stockton said. “We see an opportunity to expand our brands in this category across boys, girls and preschool.” Mattel shares rose 0.8 percent to $37.44 at 10:34 a.m. in New York. They had declined 9 percent over the past year through yesterday. Shares of Montreal-based Mega Brands surged 36 percent to C$17.73 today in Toronto. Mattel is coming off a lackluster holiday season, with sales sinking 6.3 percent — the biggest quarterly drop since 2009.
