Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Stocks finished the week on the plus side, as the Dow hit a new high, and the broader market held its own against more bearish investors who are arguing more forcefully that the long bull market has to come to an end at some point. Several stocks helped to build some excitement for market participants, and Clean Energy Fuels (NASDAQ: CLNE  ) , Universal Display (NASDAQ: OLED  ) , and Nuverra Environmental Solutions (NYSE: NES  ) were among the best-performing stocks in the market Friday.

In November 2013, it acquired Ameristar Fence Products Inc, a manufacturer of ornamental fences and gates. In January 2014, it acquired IdenTrust. In February 2014, it acquired Lumidigm . Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Weighing Machine]

Domiciled in Sweden, Assa Abloy (ASAZY.PK) is the largest lock maker in the world with a global market share of nearly 12%. While the construction market has been difficult since the financial crisis, Assa has continued to increase revenue and operating profit every year since 2010 and is on track to do so again in 2013. While commercial construction has been subdued, the aftermarket (which represents ~70% of the total lock market) is driven by changes in tenancy, renovation, and extensions have not been very cyclical and provides the company with a steady stream of profits. Assa has been cobbled together through 150+ acquisitions since the early 1990s and while management has done a good job of rationalizing facilities, there remain opportunities to increase manufacturing efficiencies. Similarly, the company’s back office is still running dozens of IT systems (as a result of acquisitions) but management plans to consolidate these over the next few years. Further, Assa rem ains an active consolidator of the locks industry – it should be able to add 5% per year to sales via acquisitions (as an aside, those interested in micro-caps should have a look at Securidev in France which trades at less than half the private market value Assa has paid for lock makers on average over the past decade). Having the highest margins in the industry, Assa is able to achieve significant synergies on acquired businesses and earn good returns on capital for its shareholders through M&A. Thus even in a difficult economy, we expect Assa will continue to grow its operating profit given its steady after market revenue, opportunity to improve results through cost cutting, and through value accretive M&A. While its shares are not cheap, at 19x earnings, shares could offer investors with a five year holding period and an 8-10% annualized return.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Burrows]

But it doesn’t end there. Investors should run away from all OTC marijuana stocks, including Medical Marijuana (MJNA), Cannabis Science (CBIS), CannaVest (CANV), MediSwipe (MWIP) and GreenGro Technologies (GRNH). As the SEC warns:

  • [By John Udovich]

The SEC has halted trading of small cap marijuana stock Growlife Inc (OTCMKTS: PHOT) after a relatively brief trading halt for Advanced Cannabis Solutions, Inc (OTCMKTS: CANN), but Tranzbyte Corp (OTCMKTS: ERBB), Cannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS: CBIS) and Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS: MJNA) are still very much alive. However and as I have noted (repeatedly) in the past (see here), Medical Marijuana Inc has a former CEO who has been indicted for a multi-state mortgage fraud scam/ponzi scheme while Medbox Inc (OTCMKTS: MDBX) is another marijuana stock with some “issues” that were summed up nicely in a Southern Investigative Reporting Foundation article cleverly entitled: Tinkerer, Lawyer, Hustler, Lies: One Man’s Path to a Dope Fortune. Obviously, investing in marijuana stocks is not for conservative. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of good or bad news for investors in the marijuana sector to inhale, including the following:

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Much like Nuvilex, Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS) appears to simply be another conventional biotech outfit. And, truth be told, that’s what CBIS is. It just happens to be developing two drugs based on cannabinoids… one to reat HIV/AIDS, and the other to treat cancer. Both drugs are in preclinical trials right now, so an actual marketable product is still years down the road for Cannabis Science Inc. But, as a legitimate biotechnology that isn’t aiming to simply fuel tokers’ needs, it’s not going to hit any regulatory or law-enforcement roadblocks.

  • [By John Udovich]

One almost has to feel sorry for old school small cap marijuana stocks like Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS: MJNA), Cannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS: CBIS) and Hemp Inc (OTCMKTS: HEMP) which have been around awhile and increasingly have to contend with the marijuana newswires getting flooded with news from every small cap OTC stock along with your mother’s uncle’s fifth cousin trying to grab a piece of the marijuana hype. We alone had two specific articles (Small Cap Marijuana Stocks Aiming for a High With News: MCIG, FRTD & SKTO and Four Marijuana Small Caps Giving Investors Highs or Lows: ENRT, VMGI, NVLX & RTXBQ) covering about half a dozen different wannabe marijuana stocks with news for just this week along with another article (Putting My Call on Latteno Food in Perspective, Take-Two (LATF, MJNA, ERBB)) about another small cap that’s infusing food with weed.

Competitors such as Sandridge Energy Inc. (SD), Penn Virginia Corp. (PVA), Newfield Exploration Co. (NFX) also have a negative ROE. An alternative could be Cabot Oil &Gas Corp. (COG), Range Resources Corp. (RRC), SM Energy Co. (SM), Pioneer Natural Resources Co. (PXD) or Whiting Petroleum Corp (WLL), Berry Petroleum Co. (BRY), but for investors searching for a higher ratio, Continental Resources Inc. (CLR) will be the best option.

It’s Christmas, a time when we wish for peace on earth and goodwill towards everyone. So, with investors in a forgiving mood, it might seem tempting to buy energy exploration & production companies that have underperformed in 2013–you know, Forest Oil (FST), Newfield Exploration (NFX) and the like.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The S&P 500 got a lift from Sysco (SYY), which gained 10% to $37.62 after purchasing a competitor,  Davita HealthCare Partners (DVA), which rose 6.7% to $62.17, and Cabot Oil & Gas (COG), which reported stronger than expected production in the Marcellus region. Big losers include Newfield Exploration (NFX), which dropped 8% to $24.33 after offering disappointing production guidance, and Edwards Lifesciences (EW), which fell 5.4% to $62.73 after releasing disappointing earnings guidance.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Newfield Exploration (NFX) has plunged today after the oil and gas explorer revealed its production targets for 2014 and beyond.

    Associated Press

RTT News has the details on Newfield’s forecast:

Newfield Exploration Co. updated its “three-year plan” and provided additional information. Net production from continuing operations in 2014 is expected to range from 44 – 48 million BOE, or 10% – 20% higher than 2013 estimated net production from continuing operations of approximately 40 million BOE. Domestic liquids production in 2014 is expected to increase 30% over the previous year.

Jefferies’ Subash Chandra and Daniel Braziller offer their take on the announcement:

Company is tightening the previously announced production guidance range. New range is 44-48 mmboe and 48-55 mmboe in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Domestic liquids growth y/y in 2014 is expected at 30%, slightly below prior guidance for 38%. Lower liquids is likely the result of morecapital being deployed in the Cana and slower near-term growth in the Uinta due to refinery maintenance…

2013 production has so far come-in at the high-end of previous guidance, and a similar outcome is possible for 2014-2016. The stock is well positioned from here to outperform, as the market is likely assuming the midpoint of guidance will be achieved. Additionally, the 2013 reserve report is an upcoming catalyst – we believe NFX is an NAV story. On a $95 / $4 price deck, we estimate a 2013 P1 value of $23/shr.

Shares of Newfield have dropped 8% to $24.31 at 3:45 p.m., well below Exxon Mobil’s (XOM) 0.3% gain, Occidental Petroleum’s (OXY) 0.5% rise and Anadarko Petroleum’s (APC) 0.4% dip.

www.take2games.com Sometimes, the right answer when a potential suitor appears before you on bended knee is “Yes.” But there’s been no shortage of attractive offers getting spurned on Wall Street. Sometimes those offers just don’t make sense: Boards aren’t ready to sell; shareholders think their stock is worth more, and vote down the deals. AstraZeneca (AZN) recently became the latest big company to refuse a suitor’s advances. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer (PFE) was shot down last week after making a $117 billion offer for AstraZeneca. Pfizer claims that was its final offer; apparently, it wasn’t enough. Sometimes, those disinterested companies are better off on their own. However, for every Facebook (FB) that correctly scoffed at a large figure (offered $1 billion, it’s worth north of $150 billion today), there are many companies that lived to regret turning down. Here are five companies whose owners really should have taken the money and run. Circuit City Circuit City is gone. The consumer electronics superstore chain filed for bankruptcy, liquidating all of its stores in 2009. It didn’t have to go out that way. There was no shortage of companies proposing to take over the once-vibrant retailer. It turned down private equity firms that wanted to pay $8 a share in 2003 and then $17 a share in 2005. Blockbuster Video — yes, that Blockbuster — even started to make buyout overtures in 2008. Blockbuster was hoping that teaming up with Circuit City would create “an $18 billion retail enterprise uniquely positioned for the convergence of media content and electronic devices.” It never panned out. Circuit City was out of business less than a year later. Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) Weeks before Take-Two Interactive’s “Grand Theft Auto IV” hit stores in 2008, Electronic Arts (EA) initiated a hostile takeover. It offered to pay $26 a share for Take-Two, but with the game expected to set industry sales records (which it eventually did), there was little reason

It would be silly for any video game publisher to ignore that huge market for the sake of cutting-edge graphics. That’s why Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA  ) released Titanfall for both the Xbox One and Xbox 360, and why Take-Two will release Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel on the PS3 and Xbox 360 instead of next-gen consoles.

Over in the S&P 500, the surge in Electronic Arts (EA), which creamed earnings forecasts, was offset by plunge in Whole Foods Markets (WFM), which is feeling the heat from competition that’s impacting its bottom line. Electronic Arts gained 23% to $35.12, while Whole Foods Market fell 21% to $39.32.
