NEW YORK (TheStreet) — Danish pharmaceutical company ALK announced it had received unanimous support from a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee for oral drug Gratsek. The drug, designed to treat glass pollen allergies, is one developed as part of ALK’s strategic partnership with Merck & Co. (MRK), a marriage which will grant the latter license to market and sell the product in North American markets.

“ALK welcomes the FDA Advisory Committee’s conclusion, which represents another important step towards bringing this innovative new treatment to U.S. patients,” ALK CEO Jens Bager said in a statement.

Assuming it delivers on its outlook for 2014, its current free cash flow yield is a very enticing 20%. This isn’t a growth stock, but its brands still possess hidden value. As cheap stocks go, it’s very attractive.
Cheap Stocks to Buy: Aegon (AEG)
It’s not often that you can buy a $19 billion market cap for under 10 bucks. Aegon’s a Dutch insurance company that’s had a rough ride over the past few years, and its stock’s suffered as a result. In the late ’90s AEG stock traded around $60 — it hasn’t been anywhere close since. However, it’s got some good assets that should bear fruit in the years to come. Aegon has 12,000 employees in the Americas doing business primarily under the Transamerica brand, which has been a part of AEG since 1999.

After hours, shares of Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST ) were scaring away investors, falling 3.5% after reporting earnings. The energy-drink maker beat estimates on the bottom line with a per-share profit of $0.55 against the consensus at $0.49, but sales came in short, increasing 10.7%, to $536.1 million. Analysts had expected revenue of $541.9 million. Operating margin shot up 560 basis points in the quarter to 27.8% as the company avoided $8.3 million in distributor termination expenses and saw selling expenses plummet 280 basis points. Monster was once under scrutiny for the safety of its beverages, but the company seems to have put those concerns in the past as CEO Rodney Sacks reminded investors that more than 10 billion Monster drinks have been safely consumed in the last 12 years. With that storm now behind it, the stock looks like a much safer investment, even with moderating growth.

Conditions for railroad operations in the U.S. do not look as good as on the other side of the Great Lakes. While Canadian National (CNI) and Canadian Pacific (CP) have wrestled with a greater demand and adverse environmental conditions — conditions that have sparked a heated debate at Congress — U.S. railroad operators lack the necessary demand to be noticed by the market.
- [By Vanina Egea]
Canada is being home to one of the hottest transport debates seen in the last decade. Surprisingly enough it is far from legislating over auto pilots, bio fuels or frisking. The focus of Bill C-30, according to the Calgary Herald, is “federal legislation aimed at getting more grain moving on the rails.” Canadian Pacific (CP)’s chief operating officer Keith Creel told a House of Commons committee, however, that he had a great concern over the bill’s real effect. Company representatives argue that giving shippers the ability to transfer traffic to alternate railways may indeed slow down the grain supply chain due to increased handlings.
