Top 10 International Stocks For 2015

The stock market went through a topsy-turvy day Wednesday, as optimism about a potential resolution to the Ukrainian situation trumped nervousness over how the Federal Reserve might address certain risks that Chairwoman Janet Yellen brought up in Congressional testimony today. Even though the broader major-market indexes closed higher, Groupon (NASDAQ: GRPN  ) , Zulily (NASDAQ: ZU  ) , and Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM  ) plunged today.

Source: Groupon.

Groupon plummeted almost 21% even after the daily deals-turned-online retail company issued reasonably strong quarterly results. Groupon posted a narrower adjusted loss than investors had expected, and revenue climbed 26%. But investors still seem unconvinced that the company’s long-term online retail strategy will prove successful, especially as it ventures into territory in which far larger players already hold dominant positions. Until Groupon shows much better results than it gave investors today, it’ll be hard for the company to convince shareholders that its turnaround is for real.

Dallas billionaire Harold Simmons died over the weekend with investors sending shares of some of his publically traded companies like Valhi, Inc (NYSE: VHI), Kronos Worldwide, Inc (NYSE: KRO), NL Industries, Inc (NYSE: NL) and CompX International Inc (NYSEMKT: CIX)to higher levels as they anticipate changes – such as asset sales or spin offs. Harold Simmons was the embodiment of the American dream because he was born during the depths of the Great Depression in Golden, Texas to schoolteacher parents and he spent his early years living without indoor plumbing or electricity. However and by recognizing underpriced assets and through the use of massive amounts of leverage (e.g. junk bonds), he built an empire and ranked #40 on the 2013 Forbes 400 with a fortune estimated to be worth some $10 billion.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Typically, when the chairman of a company dies, its shares drop. That hasn’t been the case for Valhi (VHI), Kronos Worldwide (KRO) and NL Industries (NL), which have all advanced today after Harold Simmons passed away.

Intevac (IVAC) provides process manufacturing equipment solutions to the hard disk drive industry and high-productivity process manufacturing equipment and inspection solutions to the photovoltaic industry. This stock closed up 8.5% to $6.74 in Tuesday’s trading session.

    Tuesday’s Range: $6.23-$6.75

    52-Week Range: $4.06-$6.80

    Tuesday’s Volume: 263,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 140,032

From a technical perspective, IVAC soared higher here right off some near-term support at $6.25 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last three months, with shares moving higher from its low of $4.31 to its recent high of $6.80. During that move, shares of IVAC have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of IVAC within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if IVAC manages to take out its 52-week high at $6.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in IVAC as long as it’s trending above some near-term support levels at $6.25 or at $5.92 and then once it sustains a move or close above its 52-week high at $6.80 with volume that hits near or above 140,032 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then IVAC will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are its next major overhead resistance levels at $8 to $8.37. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $9 to $9.36 within range for shares of IVAC.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Yes and no. I don’t like the risk/reward for fixed-rate mREITs. I’m concerned we could see a spike in the 10-year Treasury note to 3.5% if the economy picks up speed, which will put fixed-rate mREITs under pressure. That said, I think there are select adjustable-rate mREITs that are worthy of a spot in your portfolio. One I do recommend in my Cash Machine Aggressive High-Yield portfolio is Capstead Mortgage (CMO).

  • [By Amanda Alix]

CYS Investments (NYSE: CYS  ) revealed its intention to raise its own quarterly payout to $0.34 from $0.32 per share earlier this week, and Armour Residential (NYSE: ARR  ) has joined in, keeping its monthly $0.07 per share dividend firmly in place, even into the third quarter.
