Bernstein’s Steven Winoker and team contend that Brexit is “bad for all our companies it is just a matter of degree.” They explain why Tyco International (TYC), Idex (IEX), Danaher (DHR),Honeywell International (HON) and Emerson Electric (EMR) could feel some degree of pain:
While the direct revenue exposure to the UK is relatively small across our coverage (aside fromTyco and Idex), the potential impact from Brexit is much more widespread across the continent and the world. The impact should be most negative for our companies with larger industrial exposure to Europe, just as we have begun to hear incrementally positive commentary regarding Europe.Idex andTyco have some of the highest direct exposures to UK and Europe but Tyco’s business should be relatively more stable and in any case theJohnson Controls (JCI) synergies loom large. Eaton (ETN) and Emerson Electric, though with slightly smaller exposure, are more involved with industrial spending.Danaher andHoneywell have high revenue exposure, but we believe that their more benign end market exposure should mitigate some of the negative consequences they face. We rate Allegion (ALLE), Danaher, Dover (DOV), Fortive (FTV), Honeywell, Ingersoll-Rand (IR), Pentair (PNR) andTy co Outperform; Emerson Electric, Eaton, General Electric (GE),Idex and 3M (MMM) Market-Perform; Rockwell Automation (ROK) Underperform.

Shares of JM Smucker (SJM) are getting pounded today after the food company beat earnings forecasts but missed on revenue. Susquehanna’s Pablo Zuanic doesn’t recommend using JM Smucker’s weakness as an opportunity to buy shares:
The sales miss today (worth 7c of EPS) is troubling as it shows the Big Heart pet food business (1/3 of SJM post acquisition) has significant gaps (mass premium, independent specialty) and is not sustaining growth in the areas that were supposed to drive growth in the first place (pet snacks, sales in the specialty channel); and the other half (wet/dry pet food) faces ongoing price pressures. All this raises the risk that a larger share of BH synergies may eventually need to be reinvested. On the other hand, coffee was not as bad as the fiscal 1Q17 numbers implied; pipeline fill comps were hefty, and although underlying trends are slowing, this is nowhere as bad as what the headline reported numbers indicate. Despite cutting total company sales guidance, SJM management left EPS guidance unchanged (lower input costs, lower tax rate). We have slightly lowered our already below consensus sales estimates, but have increased coffee margin assumptions, so actually our EPS goes t o $7.54 from $7.52, up but still below guidance of $7.60-7.75. Our price target remains at $139 by Dec16. Our proper apples-to-apples comps, taking the intraday price of $143.80, SJM trades at a -8% discount to peers, while we think a 5-10% discount would be more warranted (our PT takes -10% given increased risk and blurred visibility). We think coffee margins for FY16 are abnormal and do not expect them to be sustained in FY18; by the same token, we see downside risk by then in pet food margins.
Citigroup’s David Driscoll and Cornell Burnette call the selloff “overdone.” They explain why:
SJM shares are down -8% following the firms F1Q17 report, in which SJM beat consensus EPS ests by +

The Company has completed a Phase III clinical trial of its TPE platform-based product candidate, oral octreotide capsules (trade named as MYCAPSSA) for the treatment of acromegaly, a condition that results in the body’s production of excess growth hormone. “For Verizon to offer services in that area, makes sense,” said Randy Warren, chief investment officer of Warren Financial Service. “They certainly have the knowledge, the communications, the network, the backup facilities, all of the things that you need to guarantee cloud communications, cloud technology.” Warren said this view also applies to AT&T (T), which also has its hand in the cloud. With total control of the wireless group, Verizon Communications may now have the increased opportunity to bundle its Verizon Terremark offerings from the wireline division with wireless services, potentially adding an important lock-in component that further disincentivizes retail postpaid customers from defecting to a competitor. Even though Verizon’s monthly churn rate remains at impressively low levels, the company can’t afford to become complacent on working hard to keep every one of its customers loyal given that raising prices in the oligopoly type structure of the U.S. telecom world hasn’t really been an option. Retail postpaid customers make up a majority of Verizon Wireless’ customer base and include corporate accounts. The firm has not been disclosing any specific revenue numbers for its cloud business, but in some ways the amount may not be as relevant if the business was viewed solely as an anti-churn tool or a loss leader. [Read: Robots and 3D Printing] “Cost controls are paramount given the saturation of the market and the high costs of rolling out new technologies like 4G,” said Brian Frank, portfolio manager at Frank Capital. “In a commodity-like business, the company with the lowest costs is at a large advantage. It makes sense they would be happy to spend money on cloud as a loss-leader if it helped lower customer churn.”

The news we found most interesting yesterday was the story regarding AT&T (T) that broke during the session that they were looking to offload their tower assets. The deal could fetch as much as $5 billion and many are looking at this as a precursor to a much larger deal where AT&T would look to expand overseas via a large acquisition.

Cituigroup’s Kate McShane and Corinna Van der Ghinst explain why they’re still bullish on Under Armour (UA) despite fears that its deal with Kohl’s (KSS) could result in slower growth:
- [By Ben Levisohn]
Shares of Kohl’s (KSS) are getting killed today after the retailer cut its full-year guidance as profit margins shrank. Citigroup’s Paul Lejuez and Tracy Kogan have the details:
Gabe Hernandez/The Monitor/Associated Press
Not unlike its department store peers, Kohl’s had a tough 4Q. Though comps were up slightly (+0.4%), it was below consensus of +1.7% (though inline with our flat forecast) and margins were significantly below plan as the company needed promotions to drive sales. As we indicated in our 1/4/16 report An Object In Motion(Retail Physics Hold True For Holiday), we believe elevated inventories at dept stores will pressure GM in 1Q (and we believe this will hold true for Kohl’s). Given the tough landscape, and with 1,000+ stores across the country, we believe Kohl’s will continue to be challenged to drive sales and earnings higher, despite its many in-store initiatives. We reiterate our Neutral rating…We are lowering our 2015E/2016E from $4.25/$4.29 to $4.00/$3.91. For 2016 we model comps 0-(1)% and op margin of 7.4% (down 80bps). We are lowering our TP from $49 to $46 to reflect our forecast reduction.
Shares of Kohl’s have tumbled 16% to $43.04 at 11:28 a.m. today, while Macy’s (M) has dropped 2.6% to $40.56, and Nordstrom (JWN) has fallen 5.7% to $47.64.

Credit Suisse analysts Michael Exstein and Anjani Vedula call Kohl’s (KSS) the “canary in the coal mine” for mall retailers. They explain why:
Rarely does a sector see a secular shift as dramatic as the one now occurring in retail in general and the mall anchors specifically. After last year’s poor operating and stock performance, many retail investors are now expecting a significant cyclical recovery in margins. However, we do not think this is a realistic expectation because mall anchors’ expense structures have fundamentally changed for two reasons: 1) sales mix has shifted towards the lower margin e-commerce channel; 2) brick & mortar operating margins are increasingly pressured (on both an absolute dollar basis as well as % of sales basis), leading to lower operating margins in aggregate.
Using Kohl’s 10-K disclosure to illustrate this shift. We illustrate this secular shift in mall anchors’ expense structures by modelling the breakout in operating income for Kohl’s brick & mortar business (B&M) versus their e-commerce business. Kohl’s gives more details on the shift in SG&A than its peers, making it easier to illustrate the pressures the industry is under. In fact, in spite of the pressures, Kohl’s has maintained relatively constant sales as well as gross margins, no small feat considering they are absorbing shipping & handling charges associated with e-commerce. In effect, we are using Kohl’s as the “canary in the coal mine”, as a preview of a larger secular issue facing the mall anchor sector…
While all retailers with an e-commerce business are exposed to these secular changes to some degree, those with a higher e-commerce penetration are more exposed, sooner. On the brick & mortar operations side, those retailers with the lowest wage rates are likely to be most impact by the essentially industry-wide wage increases brought on b

Becton Dickinson (BDX) has gained 1.2% to $101.97 this morning afterPiper Jaffrayraised the stock to Overweight from Neutral. AnalystsWilliam Quirk andDavid Clairexplain why they’re optimistic about the medical technology company:
Observations from multiple diagnostic conferences all suggest significant interest inmicrobiology investment. This interest spans track systems (Kiestra), new identificationtechnologies (Maldi/BioTyper) and Molecular (gram +/- assays). When consideringAST (antimicrobial susceptibility testing) recall from Siemens, we believe BD’smicrobiology business is poised to accelerate its performance over the next several years.Combined with a delayed JNJ/Ypsomed pen needle launch and incremental Europeansafety adoption, we believe numbers for BD will continue to climb…
