Top 10 High Tech Stocks To Own Right Now

This series, brought to you by Yahoo! Finance, looks at which upgrades and downgrades make sense, and which ones investors should act on. Today, our headlines feature a pair of cuts to price targets at Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM  ) and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) . But the news isn’t all bad, so before we address those two, let’s start on a positive note.

Cliffs could climb
That has got to hurt. No sooner did Cliffs Natural Resources (NYSE: CLF  ) CEO announce he’s planning to retire yesterday, than out came an analyst and recommended buying the stock.

Musing that Joseph Carrabba’s exit from the company opens up new directions in which the company could go (spinoffs, going private), one thing BB&T thinks will not happen is a dilutive stock offering — and just removing that risk from the table may allay some investor concerns. Additionally, BB&T notes that iron ore prices appear to be ready to improve in 2014 — which clearly would be a good thing for a company like Cliffs, which sells the stuff.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Consolidation has been the name of the game for growth in the propane industry lately, with some deals having made big changes to the industry over the past year. Last spring, Inergy (NYSE: NRGY  ) decided to sell off its retail propane business to Suburban Propane (NYSE: SPH  ) , vastly increasing Suburban’s size while giving Inergy a big stake in its former rival. Meanwhile, Ferrellgas has continued its string of more modest acquisitions, with the company’s buyout of privately held Western Petroleum marking the fifth purchase Ferrellgas has made since last August.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

    Inergy (NYSE: NRGY  )
With operations that include a natural gas storage business as well as natural gas liquids assets, Inergy is another MLP to consider if you are on the lookout for a dividend-paying stock. There are a lot of moving parts with this company, which makes it an interesting stock to watch. The company, along with its affiliate Inergy Midstream (NYSE: NRGM  ) , is in the process of merging with Crestwood Midstream Partners (NYSE: CMLP  ) to create a company boasting increased size, scale, and diversity, as you can see below. Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Sean Williams]

One company with seemingly limitless upside potential today was senior housing operator Emeritus (NYSE: ESC  ) , which gained 35.2% after agreeing to be purchased by Brookdale Senior Living (NYSE: BKD  ) for $1.4 billion, excluding debt. Under the terms of the deal, Emeritus shareholders will receive 0.95 shares of Brookdale, and would effectively own 23% of the outstanding shares of the company once the merger is complete. Brookdale anticipates the deal being EPS neutral in 2014, and forecasts it adding $0.40 in EPS by the third year. The move certainly makes sense on paper, as cost synergies will help these two senior housing companies fight back against the expectation of declining Medicare reimbursement rates. However, over the long run, the Medicare reimbursement picture is still very cloudy, making Brookdale a riskier buy at the moment following today’s announcement.

  • [By John Kell]

Brookdale Senior Living Inc.(BKD) has agreed to merge with Emeritus Corp.(ESC) in a deal that values the operator of long-term, assisted-living facilities at about $1.4 billion, as the companies look to form a national senior-living-solutions company. Emeritus surged 34% to $28.75 premarket.

Fears–and hopes–for rising rates were apparent everywhere. Charles Schwab (SCHW), a beneficiary of higher rates, rose 3.2% to $27.58. Newmont Mining (NEM) dropped 3.1% to $24.50 because who needs gold when rates are heading higher? The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) fell 2.1% to $38.57 because we all know higher rates in the US are bad news for emerging markets. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 2.77% and the CurrencyShares Japanese Yen Trust (FXY) declined 1.1% to $95.22.

When judging a company’s prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it’s booking in the accounting fantasy world we call “earnings.” This is one of the first metrics I check when I’m hunting for the market’s best stocks. Today, we’ll see how it applies to Modine Manufacturing (NYSE: MOD  ) .

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

ENGlobal (ENG) provides engineering and professional services principally to the energy sector in the U.S. and internationally. This stock closed up 9% to $1.60 in Thursday’s trading session.

    Thursday’s Range: $1.48-$1.63

    52-Week Range: $0.30-$1.88

    Thursday’s Volume: 245,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 59,090

From a technical perspective, ENG spiked sharply higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $1.50 with above-average volume. This move pushed shares of ENG into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $1.59. Shares of ENG are now starting to move within range of triggering another near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ENG manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.66 to $1.71 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ENG as long as it’s trending above Thursday’s low of $1.48 or above more support at $1.40 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 59,090 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ENG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $1.88. Any high-volume move above that level will then give ENG a chance to tag $2 to $2.20.

Gendell rarely conducted interviews, almost never publicizing his stock selections or his theories in regard to investing. The average investor had never heard of him or his hedge fund; however anyone who tracked money managers closely, was well aware the outstanding returns which were flowing into the pockets of the clients at Tontine. In 2003 and 2004, Gendell recorded near miraculous gains, approximately doubling the value of his portfolios, in back to back years.
